Spain update - F*** Off Tourists. Go Home. Not Wanted?

Spain update and the anti-tourist campaigners are back and nasty signs are popping up in tourist hotspots telling people to F*** Off. But is this a general or minority sentiment?

That is not true. Ask the people who live in Amsterdam Venice Rome and coastal towns in Spain and yes the Brits have a bad reputation in some of these places. Brexit did not help for sure either. People just do not like a 2 faced visitor. Locals are sick of those tourists. They are pushed out of the housing market and get sick of rolling suitcases 24/7. What the hell is complaining to local politicians going to do? Nothing. Most of them do not speak English even. Don't waste your time there as a foreigner. We do not live in the British empire anymore where you are taken serious as a foreign visitor without a right to vote. Just go where you are welcomed more. In general those places are not the same as where the Brits go in big hordes.

I was born and raised in Bath, which is a tourist city. The council seems to concentrate on tourism and the university. A lot of the jobs are low paid seasonal jobs and there is little in the way of job opportunities. The city attracts rich luvvies and commuters to London so the properties are horrendously expensive .Young people have to leave the city when they leave the parental home. When I visited my mother in hospital about 10 years ago, a nurse told me that Bath was London prices at Cornish wages and her children left because they couldn't afford to live there. There was a water shortage when I went to Sicily in 2002, leading to restrictions on water usage. This resulted in people not being allowed to have showers in their own homes, however hotels were exempt - presumably because of tourism. So if a local wanted to have a show, they had to book into a hotel. Tourism has its place, but if it gets too powerful it can ruin the affected areas. Unfortunately Spain has suffered from the influx of tourists that are just interested in drinking and parties. Even though it brings in money, it must upset the locals. I do have sympathies with the Spanish who are fed up of tourism. Having said that, I am thinking of going to Spain next year for a birdwatching holiday.

All of them families, so better than short term rentals that tend to be loud partiers, but still disturbing to the flow of neighborhood life. On the left side of us we’ve had multiple foreign owners that don’t speak English, and we don’t speak Chinese. GB News is correct to say that tourists like to eat and drink late. The problem is that Spanish employers won't pay their staff properly...and they bully their staff into working late, sometimes for nothing, in return for being allowed to keep their jobs. If employers are losing their staff...they are always complaining about lack of staff...they simply have to improve pay and conditions. Badic economics. But Diaz and Sanchez have agreed with Biden to take some/many of the illegal immigrants from the US border. Sanchez explains this by saying he is trying to help employers in the Spanish hospitality industry... because he hopes they will staff the restaurants and bars. There you have it: for all Diaz's fine words the Spanish government is actively undermining the already underpaid Spanish workers. And there, Stuart, is the real story: not some semi-digested guff about GB News

I was reading that in some areas Spanish people are no longer choosing to dance until dawn. Instead, they are going for a leisurely tapas lunch. Then a gin tonic or two before heading to a club at about 16.00. Leaving to go home and to bed at about 23.00. Tardeo. Alicante is one example. On a different note, last year I spent months going to the hospital several times a week. When I asked the younger nurses what their plans for the weekend were. Those under about 30 said to go home and sleep. While those older than that were planning to dance the night away.

Tourist resentment is a thing with people all over the world, in these destination hotspots. In the US, some people in the beaches communities have the same sentiment. With their stickers on their cars that say “locals only” and “townies go home”. “Townies” refers to people that live in town, and not at the beaches. And for the record, I’m an American and when I come to Spain, technically, I’m not a tourist. With my conquistador blood, I’m just back home after being away on mission… conquering abroad. 😁👊💀

Hi Stuart. I was speaking to some old friends (both long term expats and local Canarian's) on the Island of Lanzarote (where I lived for a few years in the 2000's) and there's a big issue on that island with very limited long term rental properties anywhere on the island. What is available is being rented at costs pricing out many locals. The issue seems to be the rise of the digital nomad to these agreeable weather places and many long term rental landlords turning these properties into airbnb (most of the time without licenses or being in a tourist rental property zone). They were lamenting the lack of action local government is taking and even when they do the first fines are a weekly airbnb amount! This has also forced property sales prices sky high.

Been going to Spain regularly for 24 years. I've never experienced any anti-tourist backlash. Since I am a traveler and like Spain very much, I made the effort to learn Spanish. I eschew all the tags of being a tourist by leaving at home all my ballcaps and sporting teams related clothing. I dress conservatively, speak cordially and act as a guest in their home. It pains me to think of towns in the north being overrun with tourists. Once it happens it will never be the place you came to because it was special. On a month long trip from Barcelona to Potes, across the north of Spain, I interacted only twice with English speaking tourists and that's the way I like it.

The traffic is terrible, visitors drive worse than locals-and that’s saying something, difficult to find a place to park, too many tourists lack common courtesy and respect, tourists/pedestrians don’t observe crossing lights, they clutter the sidewalks with scooters and e-bikes and zip by pedestrians at max speed; sometimes resulting in collisions with them; resulting in injuries.

I am Spanish and I live in the Canary Islands. It's not that we don't love tourists, we live largely with them. The problem is when with the same salary as years ago, you face having your rent raised, because if you don't pay it, a tourist will pay it. Because they have started to remove rents for normal housing and make them touristic. Because they say that there is no housing, but they do not stop building high-end apartments that are mostly intended for foreigners for a few months a year.

Our general attitude towards tourism is fine as long as the tourists behave normally (drunk and shouting is not normal). A large part of the income comes from tourism, both domestic and foreign. Why would we forego that income? The legal rental of apartments to tourists is probably not complained about much, it is regulated (and taxed). However, there is a lot of illegal renting (untaxed), which nobody likes. If you have a correct long-term rental contract, you cannot normally 'just be kicked out' because the landlord wants to rent to tourists, there is probably something else behind it. A landlord is not obliged to renew short-term contracts (less than a year). May be different rules for different regions of Spain. There are always a few people who try to blame their bad lives on others and they may feel better because they give some message on a wall or the Internet. And yes, Asturias is a very nice holiday destination. I live in Malaga, Andalucia but love to go on summer holidays in northern Spain.

Holiday makers cause massive disruption in residential buildings mainly with noise. With regards to my comment the other day about the fact that in the first 5 years of your Non Lucrative Visa you cannot leave Spain for more than 10 months. There were comments about the passports not being needed because of Schengen. However we now need to have statements from the Spanish bank to prove that we are in Spain during those periods (ie they want to see Mercadona etc on your Bank Statement). It's the other way around now, the government doesn't need to prove you are not in Spain for that period, you have to prove you are!!!
