Hey James and Yoly, thanks for your guidance in your video series. We (my wife Shannon and I) had an unexpected trip to Spain come up and these videos are so very helpful if cutting through the noise. We came through Barcelona last week and had a fantastic meal / experience at Can Romanet. And yes, there was an attempted pick-pocket incident, fortunately we were aware and averted the situation. I’m afraid it’s too late for that. But, it’s possible to take proactive steps and do things like banning Airbnb, and similar regulations to keep the place from becoming a tourist trap where the locals get crowded out and priced out. This should go a long way towards minimising the crunch on the North.

@evanmcmullin994 depends on the idea and your view of a good restaurant idea. I did specifically say franchises but I'm also going to include chain restaurants. Some business models are easily repeatable and get financial backing allowing them to grow faster than others. I'm not sure Dierks Bentley's Whiskey restaurant is really that much of a "good idea". It was good enough and had enough financial backing. Do we need those kind of good ideas or do we need more single location family owned restaurants? Just because something can be successful in a basically unregulated free market economy, doesn't mean it's universally a good idea. It's a good idea to win at the game of capitalism, but is it best for our society, culture, wealth distribution, etc.?

The franchises are globalized restaurants, void of personal touch and atmosphere. They are predictable and sterile. Support family restaurants and your local people. It’s also why people love Europe. I haven’t heard of people travel to the US for food experiences. US is full of franchises.

Minimum wage increase bill hurts mom n pop the most. Thats why they're slowly going away while franchises stay. I live in a neighborhood that's close to busy districts n the turnovers of local restaurants annually are pretty high. It's pretty normal

I met hate from a few Europeans in Spain for speaking another language and not looking as Spanish German or other European . but what to do I never apologize for my family race or nationality origins as I'm only an imperfect human.

Unless we’ve been taking a long nap over the past 3-4 decades, we all have taken notice that the “Ways of Living” in most of the parts of the planet has changed dramatically. You can say a lot of this about almost 85% of the places around the world. I don’t know about others, but my wife and I are retiring to Playa de San Juan de Alicante this year; and never expected to go back to the same Spain that we experienced and loved so much back in the 80s when we were students living in Madrid for over two and a half years. We migrated to Canada after Spain; lived there for over 8 years and then migrated to the United States and been living here for over 25 years; and both countries are almost unrecognizable from what we saw and experienced the first time we set foot in them. What happened; you might ask. Well, life happened; people happened; politics and economics happened. Spain is no different. Imagine what would a couple of young immigrants who move to Spain today would say about the country 30 or 40 years from now… And oh by the way, tapas was never a healthy way of eating; so no wonder the younger generations have dropped them from their priorities 😊

If tapas are not healthy what are American fast food franchises all over Spain, healthy?

Japan and Spain are very similar in many aspects. One thing from japan that Spain could implement is the “hometown tax” where if you live in a city you can allocate part of your taxes to go directly into a small town and in exchange the,small town sends you a small gift bag with local products. This way off the path areas are kept alive and people are inclined to go visit them since they are well kept thus strengthening the economy of the local tourism. The last thing is the more you grow the train network the more people move around and move money around thus helping more places in spain have strong economies.

@gomezalic8515 A favorite place for us, Bar Casa Matas in Benalmádena close to Malaga. Mostly local residents in there, but they welcome all. A daily menu of the day, reasonably priced, great meal, delicious homemade soups.

@msvideotime Moved for a Non- Lucrative Visa (NLV) documents sent to the SF Spanish embassy. All required documents were translated into Spanish. We were required to show income, medical cert., letter of intent, and application docs. Our process took 30-45 days during 2021 COVID-19

Count me amongst the people who find crowded tapas bars intimidating, especially with my limited language skills. As Yoly said, it takes a lot of energy to carve out your space and defend it. I prefer to get there early, get my corner table and let the crowd fill in around me. I think the craziness of the tapas bar is turning more people who find the table service at restaurants more relaxing.

It's not bad technique, but famous places will always be full xD, don't be afraid that in Spain we are used to tourism, there are many possibilities that they speak English, you follow the videos so as not to end up in a tourist trap. prepare a sentence: "una cerveza por favor" "gracias" "cuanto es?" "la cuenta por favor" and with this you go to the end of the world

The only thing anyone ever mentions as a net positive for mass immigration is "we have more food options" 😂

If you are fed up with US politics then I do not advise you to come to Spain, nor to France. The political climate here has been deteriorating at an increased pace since the 1980’s and 1990’s, and prospects are very bad, IMHO.

I like a bit of variety and I enjoyed this episode seeing you both in the driver’s seat giving your take on dynamic Spain. This country has been an excellent host for me over the last 39 years.

In Fuengirola over the last 5 years, the Ayuntamiento has been giving grants out to local businesses and Tapas bars to "modernise" and improve the look of the area, totally ruining them and upgrading them to Restaurant status......many places i have spent time with my parents, built great memories now destroyed.

Yes, the world is changing to much to fast. As a American, born in 🇵🇷 and living in 🇺🇸 and now establishing in 🇪🇸, I think there are some many things I like about Spain. You have time to do some homework. For what I know, taxes in Spain are really high and it gets complicated when you are 🇺🇸 citizen and working from Spain.

My wife and I have always dreamed of retiring in Spain, but the recent changes in climate are making us reconsider that, or at least look more at places like Galicia, Cantabria, or the Basque country, or even France. I'd stay away from Spanish autonomous regions with active separatist movements like Cataluña and Euskadi. Galicia, Cantabria and Asturias are a much safer bet.

What you say is not true, Madrid is greener every day. Parks and green areas are built non-stop in all its neighborhoods. In fact, it's one of the cities with the most per capita green surface and the city with more trees in alignment in its streets of the entire planet.

@@rsnankivell1962 we have had neighborhood meetings regarding this and my friends in Lavapies have too. Yes, Madrid has lots of green spaces but in many barrios they are cutting a lot down as well.

We love your videos. Love both inside the apartment chatting format but also really love you showing us more things. I loved the Rioja episode.

I first lived in Spain in 2010, and then on and off again for almost 4 years before moving to Germany a year ago. Spain has definitely changed since 2010, and you did a great job pointing out many of the ways in which it has changed. Do you think Spain will ever open up a "Tapas Bar Visa" to keep the tapas bars up and running so they don't lose that history? If so, count me in!

Pubs in the U.K are closing at a frightening rate . When I was a young man I went out on an almost nightly basis (I am 62 yrs old now). Youngsters nowadays seem to socialize on the internet , the time's they are a changing 🥺

yes mate, 60 this year and my town of Crewe has become a complete ghost town unless you want a haircut, your nails done, something from a £1 shop or a kebab. When I left school my pub crawl was 8 pubs on just 1 road and we had many more roads with the same amount of pubs on them. Now I don't go out local I get on a train and go to Liverpool. Sad sad times.

and kids dont go out much either..when I was a kid if you found anything with wheels on it you took it home and made a kart with it and found the steepest hill to ride it down. They would look at that now as boring while they sit in their bedroom on a playstation. At 16 I could fix things on a Yamaha FS1E and clean it, I wonder if any of that age now can change the fuse in a plug lol.

That’s because life is expensive now mate. I’m not in the UK but in Australia. I’m working as a doctor in our version of the NHS and can barely make ends meet, a house costs on average 1.75 million in Sydney and even a cheap apartment is 1 million. Our generation doesn’t have the spare cash to go out and socialise. So much so that I even gave up alcohol alltogether, as have many of my friends. But we’ve been called entitled by the older generations.

Also many youngsters are becomming more health conscious and see alcohol as an old person's drug/culture. I have always been like that lol.

Good to see you both on the show and interesting perspectives on the changes which I think the whole world is going through since the first decade of this century. Can’t say there is anything that is surprising as it is happening across the world. Who the influencers are influencing this change is clear from the major players on the world stage and they have been doing so since the 1900. I love the format. Thanks.

I am a Spanish citizen who is moving to Spain after living practically my entire life in the U.S.. The political toxicity in the US is not what I knew growing up there and one of the reasons why I am leaving. In my opinion the biggest problem with Spain is its outdated and somewhat laughable bureaucracy which causes so many hurdles for processes that should be quite simple. Having traveled substantially around the world I have learned to navigate many bureaucracies so this will just be one of many. Beyond that Spain is a great place to live with a very unique cultural heritage that has captivated me since childhood .

Loved this! I didn’t realize how much I missed the James and Yoly videos like these!!! More please! As much as I love Spain and learning about food and culture, I feel like I know very little about their politics. Personally, I’d love for you to do more of these. Side note- the “me” that arrived to Spain for study abroad in 2008 the the “me” that left was a different person politically. I went from being super conservative to much more moderate. For my wife & me, this is a deciding factor as we look at where to retire in the next 5 years. In our experience, if women aren’t doing well in a culture, no one else will be, either. As for the tapas, i think it's definitely good to have more variety in food, nowadays as you said we have a vast immigration and its sad that its still difficult to find more food variety! I agree thats slowly changing and i just hope tapas bars will simply evolve!

Fantastic video! Although you are both in alignment with your opinions, you approach it differently because of your origins...It's great to catch the viewpoints of both a native and an immigrant. I've been traveling to Spain for nearly 20 years and it's been educational to see the political changes (the fall of ETA, the rise of Catalunyan independence, etc.) as Spain is now 3 generations away from Franco. As you said, most have distant (most likely) classroom memories of those times. When it comes to climate, I feel many people's sensitivities are driven more by the media and politics than any actual change in climate. My first visit to Madrid in 2006 featured daily July temperatures as high as 45C and I've found that typical every trip since. Some years were a little cooler. Most don't realize that central Spain is literally 500 miles north of the Sahara Desert. While the Basque region can get snow in the Winter months, typically on a 5-year cycle. Which aligns with La Niña/El Niño patterns. It is sad to see the decline of the tapas bars, they are such an integral part of the "experiencia Española" it would be a shame to lose that. You've got a superb channel...I'm proud to have subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos.

Europe has been hot in the summer FOREVER. Climate always changes, for you younger people the 1930’s and 60’s were hotter with thousands dying. Current political climate ( no pun intended) is pushing this every summer. Cold winters? Not so much

Love the format and the views of Spain as it is today in 2023 - a realistic taste for those who do not just want to travel as tourists.

In light of the recent elections in Spain, I would like to add my vote for the channel to have Yoly be more present in videos. I can imagine that her mommy duties cannot always give her the opportunity (or energy) to participate in the videos, but when she is able to, I would love to see her. Climate change is a real concern and more people living here means less resources for everyone. Valencia isn't getting a lot of rain this year and that has me worried for the long term. The tapas culture isn't as strong in Valencia but we do have a lot of variety of restaurants, which I enjoy very much. Thank you for another educational video and for sharing detailed information about the current state of affairs in Spain.

I live in a small town in Spain

Every time my wife and I decide to eat out, I put our dining table in the garden we cook a wonderful meal and we have a fantastic time !

You two should know that I have never subscribed to ANY KZread channel (other than maybe NASA's) before a friend introduced me to you and Spain Revealed. I love your channel! This kind of background and context I find invaluable. My family and I visited Spain (and Portugal) for the first time in May. We have to thank you so much for the insights you shared in previous videos that helped make our trip stupendous! It was just wonderful. And now that I've been once, I want to go again and get further into the countryside (we visited Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona). I think it's important to not show up as a tourist in any country kind of oblivious to what's happening there. And I think the further off the beaten path one ventures, the better it is not to be ignorant of what's actually happening in the country. I like that what you're doing is not just "Spanish Food Revealed" but the whole country revealed. So please keep it up! :)

Interesting. I think the big ticket item you missed was illegal immigration. That has really influenced politics across southern europe. You also need to characterize what the parties believe. socialist vs capitalist vs populist libertarian. vox is populist libertarian and nationalist. they do not believe in an all powerful government. they focus very hard on individual rights and the idea of a country. this is the same in many democracies now.

We moved to Spain for Spain and even since our long stay 3 years ago I've noticed changes. Also, we moved from the U.S., N.Y.S. and politics was not a major factor when we began thinking about moving here, but it became the major factor. Thanks you very much.

When you say “Spain” I get the Impression you actually mean Madrid. All the habit changes you’re mentioning are nowhere to be seen outside the mass consumer spots

I really hope that the traditional tapas bar does not disappear as that is my favourite aspect of Spanish culture/lifestyle or whatever you want to call it.

Great video. I don't know if it's within the boundaries of this channel, but as a new resident to Spain, I would love to get some info on financial issues like real estate investment, the day-to-day mechanics of how to conduct yourself financially in Spain, maybe a video on the love-hate relationship Spaniards have with the English language, how to meet new local friends, especially later in life, etc. But I'd totally understand if that's just not your deal.

As someone who will be retiring in Spain (from Canada) Oct 1/23, I would be interested in all of those topics as well. You hear so many scary things about the lack of regulation among real estate professionals, lack of consistency in renting from landlords, and stories about crazy high bank fees. All are concerns as a new resident.

Thanks for such an excellent channel. I learn something every time I see you even though I first visited Spain in September 1964 with another 8 students from Leeds University and as pensioners we now visit three times a year.

Just a quick history snippet for you. When the US was at Torrejon AB, Spain, I was a cop stationed there. It was 1980, and I was dispatched up to the main gate to assist in a situation with a US member. The main gate guards were all Spaniards (quite young, but about my age (18-22 yrs old). There were 4 of them on the gate. When I walked up they all looked at me & walked off the gate in disgust. No females allowed in their work space! So yes, a lot has changed in Spain, most for the better 🥰.

Crime is, according to a Spanish friend of mine, increasing rapidly. He says the main culprits are South American gangs and North Africans, not Spaniards.

Hi there in Spain. Im here in Alberta Canada. I find your posts very interesting especially now since the pandemic. The changes you describe are very much the same here. We are used to having cold winters and nice warm but not too warm summers, we now get very hot summers (at times) and cold cold winters. It's more extreme. Our politics sound very similar as well. It's all very interesting. Thanks guys, have a great holiday!
