One of the best things about your videos is that you are both good speakers, don't hesitate, actually finish all of your sentences (unlike a certain American president), have clear, grammatically correct English, and your videos don't have interruptions. So many KZreadrs can't express themselves well, have dogs barking or babies crying in the background, or constantly interrupt the videos due to mistakes. Also, so many of them are not prepared and just ramble on, adding nothing as far as information goes. Your videos are quite good and someone who knows little about Spain can actually learn something. Congratulations.

I am an andalusian and i do resent the comment that flamenco is viewed as low class in the rest of Spain. Flamenco is universal. You might like it or not, you might understand it or not but please don't think of Andalucia as low class because we have flamenco deep in our roots. Also...in Andalucia we have the ferias, you do not hear flamenco hondo there, you hear sevillanas and that is what you dance. Flamenco is an art. The fact that some people (after listening to your video) might perceive flamenco, (my guess some might be judging the singers more than the actual music) and matter of fact put it down... it's not cool. I don't cry with the muñeira or the jota but then again that is not what Spain is famous for...I guess for the newer generations it's not cool to like flamenco? A pity. My american husband loves Camaron de la Isla...google him. Saludos desde USA

That has to be acknowledged because it's a no-brainer. Flamenco has historically been an "art" of low class and gypsies that was used a lot, in the years of the Franco regime, as a tourist attraction, hence it is known. The "nacionalflamenquismo" was called in those times. I never understood how a regime that persecuted Gypsies so strictly, then dedicated itself to promoting their dance and singing abroad.

@@enekoeneko69 I do not agree. First mention of flamenco in literature is in 1774 in the book Cartas Marruecas so, no, it is much more than poor people singing, comments like that and only referring to the time of the dictatorship, is one of the reasons why it is consider one of the many topics about Spain. Flamenco existed before Franco and before the tablaos for the tourists. If flamenco was good enough for Lorca & Manuel de Falla that says a lot.

Have to agree. Madrid is an especially safe city We rented an Airbnb about 100 metres from plaza Legazpi on paseo de Delicias. Would sometimes walk at 3 or 4 am from Sol or as far as la Glorieta de Bilbao. I can honestly say it's safer than the city I live in Melbourne. Don't agree that they are super friendly though. Due. They are very helpful and respectful when you ask them for directions for example. But I find they stick to their group of friends and find it weird if you try to converse with them as an outsider. I found that even the Gallegos or Vascos to be alot more receptive towards strangers. I find even Australians to be alot friendlier At least in Melbourne. Aussies further north can be very bogan and not very cosmopolitan. I guess it depends whom you compare them to also. Probably a generational this g as well as I remember the Madrileños from 25 years ago to be alot friendlier than the current generation.

Most say the same thing Many people in Madrid are quite cold and very insular. The only persons that seem to enjoy it are the university students. As they are surrounded by other foreigners or Spaniards from other regions. Just walk into 5 or 6 shops and I assure you you'll find at least half of the workers of those shops to be extremely rude and arrogant. With their crappy laughable wages it beats me as to why that's the case. It's never an excuse anyway. Madrileños think they are welcoming, friendly people. Go anywhere else in Spain and they'll tell you it's a city full of arrogant people. Sure. When you're living there you'll find many nice people. Some are Pelotas. Some are genuine. I know Madrid and Madrileños like the back of my hand. I've lived in Melbourne, Australia for over 20 years now. I've travelled a hell of alot. I enjoy your videos. I just got back from Spain about 4 weeks ago. Was there for 2 weeks and did a tour of the country. Beautiful, everywhere we went. However, when I came back to the states I had some interesting questions and some assumptions from fellow Americans. I was surprised when a couple of them asked me why I would bother going there as I could have gone to Mexico and it's the same thing (of course they have not been to Spain let alone Mexico). One asked me if it was difficult to buy things in stores as everyone could be taking a siesta. Most others, did not understand the country at all. I could understand that as I find most people are ignorant when it comes to geography, and history. Perhaps a video comparing Mexico to Spain would be nice for those that are confused. I have been to both. For me they really don't compare. The language and bull fights compare, but other than that not so much.

@@erinmh There are many areas in the United States I don't wish to visit. Other areas that are dangerous like New Orleans I would visit simply because I know there are safe areas and one needs to keep in those boundaries. One must know where they are safe and not exclude the whole city. But yes, there are third world areas in this country. Best to avoid. That was not my point of the post. Just the ignorance of the geography and the culture.

Flamenco, it is the biggest stereotypes from Spain, but not, Andalucía is one thing, but traditions change enormously from one comunity to the other, Cataluña, Pais Vasco, Galicia, Madrid, Valencia, Canarias, Castilla, they all are so different they don't have so much to do with each other in terms of music, language or food or culture, maybe nowadays it is all more mixed up, but no 50 years ago.

He said there wasn't much of a middle class just the struggling poor and the super wealthy. Added that government corruption was also an issue. From a visitor's perspective I love Spain, especially Seville which is my favorite city in Europe. Mind you I've never been there in \August/September when it sizzles! Last trip a few years ago I learnt some basic Spanish before arriving. What I found was that many Spanish people happily replied to me in English after I'd made a pitiful attempt to communicate in Spanish. I guess they appreciated I made an effort. I don't like the idea of hanging around the office until the boss leaves. Sounds like Japanese salary men.

Why should I drive my fancy car to work so early in the morning, and return to my big house every night so exhausted? I am so jealous of Spaniards hanging out in the evening with friends.

On the comment regarding Catholics in Spain and as a half American, half Spaniard having lived 25 years in Spain and 25 in the US I would say that for some in Spain being catholic is not about going to church on Sundays but more so about having a moral compass and some type of spiritual guidasnce which includes passing on that education to your kids even if you break the rules yourself of that moral comapss yourselves sometimes or do not believe in every single thing it teaches. I personally consider myself a catholic but don't go to church on Sundays and do not really care whether Jesus was really the physical son of God or not, to me is more about whether the compass or rules work for me. And, they do sound reasonable. Spaniards have an openness to one another and empathy overall not seen in the US. It is the catholic tradition that is partially responsible, the focus on the human being as the center of policy in the scholastic tradition and not just the economy or "progress". Spaniards today se descomulgan from the church to revindicate their religious skepticism(my friend included). However, I do not think they know what they are giving up. The grass alway looks greener on the other side. I think their history gave them a lot and it is not an easy history to have lived. I feel the next generations are discarding it not understanding that the good things they have and who they are(what other countries envy) come from it, including its catholic tradition as an integral part. I would love to see it embraced more. I think the rejection is misguided. I think this is part of the black legend off Spain influencing Spaniards minds. That is my opinion.

Great vid, very interesting. The catholic thing sounds similar to here in Ireland. Many people here will still identify as catholic in the census, but most of them do not go to mass any more. The church does not have as much social influence as it did 20 or 30 years ago.

The thing with Flamenco... imagine I go to visit the US and expect Country music everywhere, and feel weird that there is not a big Country music scene in New York, San Francisco, Chicago... Flameco is something of the south, it has absolutely nothing to do with a lot of the rest of Spain, in the same way that, say, bagpipes in Galicia and Asturias are not going to be something people in Andalusia care a lot about or would like you to associate with them. Thats a bit of the push back. Apart from that let me tell you 2 things. One, you are a very lovely couple, and two, every time James says "we", "us" talking about Spain, I just feel happy. Hi James First time i'm watching one of your videos. Being a Spain addict i do appreciate any kind of information that helps me to learn this country and it's people better. Talking about clichés, how to explain that whenever i travel to Spain, i can talk and have conversations with everyone. But back home again, trying to make contact via social media (language platforms), usually doors are closed. Having a good knowledge of English is a big issue in Spain. That's why it would be a good idea to do language exchanges. But in fact they don't. Another thing, it is said that when you want to apply for a job, you need to know people who work inside, otherwise your chances are upto 0%. What kind of a job you would recommend someone who is around his 60''s, and being able to communicate in 3 upto 5 languages ? Would be interesting to see you make a video abour work environment, do interviews with people doing different kind of jobs

All youngsters in Catalunya, Valencia, Baleares, Galicia and País Vasco (Up to 50% of Spain) speak 3 languages too. I would apply for something related to your field rather than based on the languages you speak. As you mention, networking will be of course important, AS IT IS EVERYWHERE. I've worked in England, Germany, Finland, Belgium and Spain and I couldn't see a big difference on the networking influence. Obviously in Spain the job offers are less but that's it. Having a good knowledge of any foreign language is an issue in any country that speaks a popular language (French, Chinese, Spanish and ENGLISH). Never saw a population more ignorant about foreign language than the English speaking ones... In anyway, lack of work and the advance of Netflix with popular shows not being dub encouraging pretty much every teenager to learn pretty good English.

I was in Scotland with an all-Basque team; for those not familiar with the stereotypes, our neighbors used to claim that our men were "henpecked" because they all could cook. The Scotts were amazed that our lunches were always kind of potluck (each of us would bring his own meal but always make enough to share, and we'd make a big salad to share); we were amazed and depressed that they'd eat a little, sad, depressed sandwich... *makes "little sad depressed sandwich" face*. One of those coworkers once asked why didn't we "go native" and we explained that, since our boss wasn't going to let us leave earlier than 8pm anyway (talk about presencialismo :p), we were going to bloody well eat enough lunch to tide us over until we could get home at a time the local restaurants had already closed.

Having been visiting Spain for nearly 40 years, I have always found Spaniards to be rather dismissive and aloof to me as a tourist. Never really felt I'd made any connections at all. I speak a little Spanish so try not to be that cliched ignorant English tourist, that is so prevalent on the costas. Having said that I was in Cadiz/Jerez a couple of weeks ago and felt a difference. When my Spanish failed me a couple of times the people I was talking to spoke to me in English with a big smile, which was a real surprise, I honestly think it was the first time in all of the years visiting that this has happened. I think Spain is a fantastic country to visit. Spent some time in the Murcia region back in March and as I said recently in Cadiz, which I absolutely loved(apart from the cruise ships passengers everywhere). Already have a trip to Santa Cruz de La Palma booked for next March and hope to spend some time in the north west maybe late June. Love the channel.

In 1940 Spain changed time zone following France (previously that year). UK changed its hour too in the following months. It was half a year before the german occupation of France. During spanish civil warr, in 1938 Spain changed his hour twice in the Republican side and none in the Francoist side. Spain problem isn't much of a wrong time zone, but being southern than the rest of Europe has much variation of sunset and sunrise time in summer and winter. Sunrise in Madrid occurs 0:35 minutes later than London in winter, but 1:37 later in summer. Sunset in Madrid occurs 1:57 minutes later than London in winter, but 0:35 later in summer. Correct hour for Madrid could be no more than half an hour difference from London all year round.

First time I visited Spain was in April for about 6 weeks and the weather wasn't too hot or too cold (I was in Madrid, Seville, Cordoba, Valencia, Barcelona,). I will say the next time I went during January to Madrid and Seville and yeah you guys get cold. I'm used to Southern California where during the middle of winter it gets to be 18-22 degrees for the high and about 10 degrees at night.

Yeah, LA is in fact a few degrees south of Seville, so it makes sense.
