Stereotypes about Spain can trace back to Francoist policies to attract tourism. Spain had this 'exotic', old fashioned and traditional image: strict Catholicism, bullfighting and poor peasantry. This is also related to the image some French 'enlightened' figures tried to spread to the world in the 19th century. The truth though is that Spain is a multi layered country, in terms of culture, mindset and economy, just to mention a few. We Spaniards from all four corners are hard working, but we like to enjoy life too, which is kinda shocking to other northerner mindsets. We are neither superior let alone inferior to our peers in Europe or in the world and we want to be acknowledged as equals.

Very well said, the brand that we have includes characteristics that aim to bring tourists in: sun, beaches, parties, and people who are relaxed and not working. This has nothing to do with our day-to-day life. We work like people from other countries and party in our free time as well. Are we a bit more relaxed in general? Maybe, this also depends on where we work. Could we be more productive? Definitely, if we compare ourselves to Germany and the Nordic countries. But are we just lazy and partying 24/7? No way.

I must say the policy worked quite well. I'm an Indian and because of that romanticized view of Spain in my mind I'm learning Spanish and I'll visit Spain and the Spanish world as soon as this thing is over. I just wish so much that I find a little part of that romanticism there.

Exactly. I've just finished watching a German documentary on Franco on Netflix UK, and it showed exactly that. "Turismo de sol y playa", "fiesta y sangría", "flamenco y toros". Sadly, such a long time with that image being projected abroad, we just can't get rid of it! I teach Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE) and I'm doing all I can to debunk those stereotypes by showing my students our diversity and real identity. Being Galician as well, I really don't relate to any of that at all!

As a person living in a country that was a Spanish colony for hundreds of years, history has taught me and other Filipinos that Spaniards are bad people. When you ask the people here about Spain, impression is always negative. Thank god I was able to meet a lot of Spanish people on the Internet, and it really made me erase that impression. All my Spanish friends are REALLY GOOD people. They even made me feel that distance isn’t a problem in establishing and maintaining friendships. I am looking forward to see them in person sometime in the future.

A lot of Filipinos believe that José Rizal really hated Spaniards while in fact, he’s okay with Philippines being a Spanish colony (he just wants Filipinos to be treated well and have equal rights)

@@earlisonline The Philippines were never a colony, they were a province of the Spanish empire and therefore had equal rights as Spanish citizens. That was the same as with the other Latin American territories. Spain lost Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Philippines in the Spanish American war of 1898 and they’ve been occupied illegally by the United States ever since, learn some history instead of believing the bullshit propaganda you’ve been fed.

Ya te puedo decir que de puntuales nada XDXD de mi grupo de 6 amigas, yo era la única que siempre llegaba a su hora (Y eso me viene de mi mitad Italiana), luego otra que a veces llegaba bien y otras un poco tarde (unos 5 minutos) luego otra a los 10 y otra a los 15...finalmente llegamos a las demás que llegaban sobre la media hora tarde. Lo de estricto pues depende, más al norte puede, si vas al sur para nada, y de seriedad pues más o menos lo mismo, zonas como Madrid o Cataluña sí puede ser más serio pero todo lo que es el sur de España (Murcia, Andalucía, Valencia) nada de nada

A dejar de mirarse el ombligo y pensar que tu pueblo es el "más mejor" del mundo. En todos los lugares de España se trabaja para vivir y mantener nuestros hogares, es vedad que en algunos lugares el clima y carácter de la gente propicia el que haya más vida en la calle y mas gusto por reunirse. De ahí a que no sean estrictos o formales hay gran diferencia. He conocido gente con muy poca formalidad de todas las zonas de España y también de diferentes lugares del mundo. Lo peor que viví fue, por cierto, por la desidia y el abandono sus funciones de un arquitecto catalán precisamente. Empatía y apertura de miras es lo que nos hace falta y recordar que todos somos seres humanos y todos tenemos defectos y virtudes, pero desde luego la diversidad siempre nos enriquece y nos hace más fuertes

@@mermaidsoy Para empezar, soy de Murcia. Luego, es cierto que estaba generalizando pero en ningún momento he dicho que en el sur de España no trabajaran? Solo he dicho que eran menos serios y menos estrictos...lo cual yo creo que es verdad? Justo por el clima hay cosas que en Murcia no se pueden hacer a ciertas hora dependiendo de las fechas del año a las que te encuentras, eso ya te hace relajarte y muchas personas que conozco (amigos y familia) se echan la siesta de forma habitual o tienen varias pausas para tomarse la cerveza de media mañana, cosa que cuando vivía en Madrid no veía tanto. Además, mi experiencia con gente de Andalucía ha sido siempre de las más divertidas y más cálidas que he tenido, donde la seriedad ya te digo que se iba por la ventana pero eso no significa que no supieran trabajar o no se tomaran en serio su propia vida. Por otro lado mi tío cuando se mudó a Asturias vivió una experiencia bastante distinta, donde por supuesto la gente seguía siendo cálida y acogedora pero donde cada uno iba más a su rollo a hacer sus cosas porque había que aprovechar los momentos del día antes de que se fuera el sol y por lo tanto hasta la noche no había momento de relajarse.

I must say that the Interviewer done a good job. I'm from Dublin Ireland . I travelled to Spain 🇪🇸 4 times in past, I've only few words speak Spanish,and it was challenging 😳 😬. Siestas ( which are just naps) are not really that common, there are people who take them but most won't except maybe if you're really tired, have slept really badly and need to study/work, or maybe some weekend afternoon if you're feeling tired/lazy or have a bad hangover 😅

As an Asian who has been living about 4 years in Madrid I do agree that Spanish ppl seems to work less than you feel but they do work 8 hours/day or more like others however the work is pretty slow compare to asian countries especially in paper work ( it takes extra long). It’s also true to me that Spanish peoples are really nice - friendly, warm n TALK A LOT 😄, and they have the best weather n delicious food ❤️. However the thing I didn’t like is how slow people walk on the street, like thissssss slowwwww 😭, I’m impatient.

I live in Morocco and i visit Spain quiet a lot for vacation. We always say that they walk very fast and don't waste much time getting to where they want to go. I'm a bit shocked to know that you find them slow. That means us Moroccans walk like tortugas o coalas 😂

That’s funny because I find Asians walk extremely slow especially on the street with total lack of awareness to what is happening around them. The Europeans I have noticed always walk at a brisk/fast pace and I never struggled to get past them on the street or excuse myself when trying to.

Well by saying Asian you are generalizing basically a whole continent, not just a country. And when people walk slower, I think they are just enjoying the day, you know, maybe they’re tourists or it’s their off-days. I’m an Asian and there are times when I need to go fast and times when I want to slow down too :)

@@SummerJeans I’m sorry you got triggered by my comment. I am not generalising as I have traveled and lived all over Asia and only expressing my personal opinion I did not state it as a fact? Second of all I simply don’t agree with you as most people in Asian countries move very slow without any awareness or respect for anybody around them apart for themselves. And hence it is very difficult to get around them when walking even if I am very polite and use correct manners. I understand if they want to walk slow but maybe if someone else wants to walk at a fast pace and are behind them then maybe they should have the common sense to move to one side instead of hogging the whole pathway.

I mean, Spaniards to try to be positive but Spain hasn't recovered from the 2008 financial crisis yet, and unemployment is still a huge problem, especially for young, college-educated people, we have a lot of them since University is free in Spain (which is a good thing) but many young people with or without a degree are emigrating to other EU countries. I appreciate the positive attitude but looking for and implementing solutions and changes is equally important.

I mean I don't know whether you were thinking about visiting or staying for a while, hence the little rant 😅 But if you're just visiting I do recommend doing a little tourism research beforehand and maybe giving a go to cities that are not the most popular cause there's so much to discover in Spain and its different regions are so different from each other! Some popular destinations away from the crowded Mediterranean beach cities are Madrid and the Atlantic Coast, which is green, beautiful and has very few tourists 😊

The drinking one is a weird one because I live in the UK and I have spent a lot of time in Spain. I think the main difference is the speed at which alcohol is consumed. Brits tend to binge drink whereas I’ve found Spanish people to perhaps drink more overall but they eat while they drink and it lasts all night.

We don't eat while we drink when we go drinking, but there are regions in Spain where it's common to eat and drink at the same time when you go out. However, a)you can't eat endlessly so even if you're eating and drinking you stop eating when you're full and continue drinking and b)we do go to bars and clubs where we only drink. I'd say that we drink at a slightly slower pace, maybe start talking more when we're not that drunk yet, and drink smaller beers, usually not pints; but drinks and cocktails contain the same amount of cl and alcohol as in other European countries 🙂

I met this Italian guy here in Mexico who told me that he lived in Spain for a few years, he was surprised of how they have these habits of staying up late and party almost everyday. They also start school and work late and close everything around noon for one or two hours which by the way reminds me of some towns of central and south Mexico many years ago, they don't do that anymore. I'm not judging anything of Spain, if they have those habits it's because they work for them, even more, I believe that starting school and work late could be more productive than starting at six or seven in the morning, well that's my opinion. Great videos.

Kids start school at 8 in the morning and my office hours were 8-17.15 I don’t know anyone who has a siesta, perhaps in the south but then again who wants to be on a building site in over 100 degrees at the hottest time of the day!

Quizás vaya a España en el futuro , así que este me ayuda mucho.

Obviously this video is about Spain, but my question can be applied to any nation. Are these so-called stereotypes simply allowed to survive because the citizens of the said country, in this case Spain, are the one’s who think they know what others are thinking about them, without actually knowing if that’s the case? Every stereotype mentioned in this video never crossed my mind. Never have I thought the Spaniards were lazy, big on drinking, or anything else. And with the siesta issue, does that have anything to do with the midday heat? For example, I have relatives in Texas who generally don’t hang out outside from 12:00 till 3:00 because of the intense heat. There’s a lot of places around the world that take a break during that time to escape the heat...which just makes sense. Would imagine if you asked people from outside of Spain, what they thought of Spaniards, you wouldn’t get these stereotypes or any negative remarks. At least not from the USA.

Yes, I’m from Spain and the siesta thing doesn’t have anything to do with the sleep schedule, as you said it’s done that way because of the heat. It would be impossible to go out and do stuff in summer in the middle of the day. It’s just too hot. That’s also why the days in Spain are longer, we tend to push all activities to the evening and night.

Spain is not that hot, thats also a stereotype. About a quarter of the country's population live in the so called "Green spain" which has the same weather and scenery as Ireland or the Uk. The midday pause is only for eating because in Spanish culture, lunch is like American or British dinner, its the most important and larger meal of the day. So everything is close for 2h or so, so that people go eat and then they reopen. But for some reason that has been associated with siesta which is not true. Siesta is mostly for the elderly or the kids and only done in summer months (maybe as you said due to heat) or holidays by some, not all Spaniards. Also I think is more popular in the south of the country, which is warmer.

The siesta closing hours have to do more with the type of lunch we have here in Spain, more than the heat reason (there is winter here also!). Here lunch meal its a serious business (I guess like dinner in other countries), usually lunch is 2 courses and a dessert. And you can't have this in 30 minutes.

Ese es un estereotipo que también se tiene de Latinoamérica que va de la mano con que todos los latinos saben bailar salsa, etc. En Latinoamérica mucha gente trabaja 10 horas o más al día. Claro los fines de semana si a la gente le das a escoger entre quedarse en casa a descansar o salir a divertirse a bailar y reunirse con los amigos, muchos escogerán lo último, porque probablemente como a los españoles, también nos gusta disfrutar de la vida y la familia. Pero durante la semana es full chamba sin siestas o negocios cerrados a medio día.

Los estereotipos que vienen a la mente sobre España son el clima agradable, el sol, gente muy simpática que le gusta festejar, la paella y la tortilla, la sangría y el vino, y el fútbol. Sé por experiencia propia que los estereotipos se desatan cuando conozcas un lugar y la gente. Nunca he visitado a España pero algún día me encantaría hacer una visit. Por ahora, sigo aprendiendo sobre la cultura y el idioma por estos vídeos 😊

Me hace gracia los turistas que vienen a la zona de España de Madrid para arriba en invierno pensando que hace calor y sol todo el año como en el sur de Estados Unidos y luego está todo nevado y congelado y se les encogen los cojones.

@@diegohernandezalonso8735 jaja bien dicho. Ten en cuenta que los estados del sur en EEUU incluso tienen meses fríos. Florida por ejemplo baja hasta 10C en enero y en texas tenemos un par de días menos cero.

Where I'm from, I don't think we ever hear stereotypes about Spanish people at all except they like to party LOL (and we like to go to Spain to party). I mean there are way more stereotypes in regards to Italians and French and sometimes even Portugese.

That's cool but the partying thing is kind of a toxic stereotype since it usually implies that we work less. I've been living in Finland for 16 years and I hate that they make those assumptions about me, especially since I'm a perfectionist, very quiet and follow all the rules. I can tell you that Nordics party harder than Spaniards, just inside (at home with friends or in bars/clubs, except in the summer). The siesta and fiesta thing is an extremely clever marketing strategy made for tourists who come to Spain on holidays. It's a pity because Spain is a geographically extremely diverse country that has so much to offer besides beach and sunshine. So much nature and culture in so many different regions. But I understand that when you live in 'Mordor' you don't want to spend your holidays in a place where it might rain the whole week. My parents spend their holidays in the Spanish Atlantic coast, but in the middle of the winter, I'd probably rather go to the Canary Islands so I don't blame you 😅

Good question. I would probably not say things that way in English but sometimes a literal translation is perfect because it helps me to remember. Some subtitles are not good but I already speak English so I don't care :) For example.......1:23....."of layabouts... and of a lot of siesta" is not correct but I understand it fine in this context. It’s not bad. Sometimes words chosen are a little off. For example, toward the end of the video, a woman is saying “por la trayectoria de historia...” and it was translated as “for the course of history”. Most people would have understood the “trajectory” of history better and it’s the exact translation so I’m not sure why it wasn’t used. Plus “por” would probably make better sense translated as “because of” as it is answering the question “por que”.

Yo estoy viviendo en Reino Unido desde hace más de un año y he conocido muchas personas de otros países y sí tienen esas ideas de vagos, muy alegres, poco responsables. En parte tienen razón, pero porque en otras culturas son EXTREMADAMENTE rutinarios, respetuosos con los mayores y las normas, el trabajo es asfixiante y son gente amargada e infeliz. Por eso a su lado parecemos unos vagos, pero no lo somos. Yo no me siento identificada con esa negatividad e infravaloración. Somos gente alegre y cariñosa, y muy trabajadores! No creo que nos tengan tanta envidia... Más bien aquí hay mucha envidia... La gente que te mira por la calle y te pasa un escáner con cara de palo, personas amargadas y frías hay aquí también... Me cansa un poco el estereotipo de los españoles alegres y cariñosos (y eso que soy española) porque no es siempre verdad. Claro que hay gente alegre y cariñosa, pero por uno así también hay otro desagradable y criticón. He vivido en UK más de tres años y he encontrado tanta gente fría e hipócrita como gente tremendamente hospitalaria, simpática y acogedora con una manera de sacar partido de la vida admirable, deseando hacer planes al aire libre en cuanto el sol sale y con la misma alegría y festividad que puedes encontrar en España (o incluso más, porque valoran más un día de sol). No creo que nos tengamos que sentir superiores a nadie.

Yo conozco mucha, mucha gente en España que está asfixiada por el trabajo, y además no lo pueden dejar. Sí que trabajamos lo suficiente pero debemos mejorar en productividad! Yo sólo he vivido unos meses en UK pero en mi opinión la gente de mi edad (20-35) sí disfruta de la vida, y mucho!!

En francia se cierran las tiendas a las 12'30 y se abren a las 15'30, y cierran a las 19'30,si mal no recuerdo, Algunos comercios, hacen como aqui, su jornada partida, los supermercados y c. Comerciales esos no cierran.

Sí, los franceses tenéis suerte porque no se meten tanto con vosotros por ello, aunque por otra parte hay europeos que dicen "odio a Francia" así por así, cuando no tienen ninguna razón para odiar a Francia ni a los franceses?? Los españoles miran con desprecio a sus antiguas colonias, países de América del Sur y América Latina. Los españoles siempre hablan rápido, son activos en el amor y disfrutan de las aventuras. Los españoles siempre comen mariscos y paella. Los españoles están dispuestos a dejar que Cataluña se independice. Los españoles aún no se han rendido ante la invasión portuguesa.

I think the being lazy thing is more hurtful since it can impact how your foreign colleagues view you, and might make it necessary to you to prove yourself at work in order to get treated equally. I've never hear anyone say that you live in igloos in Canada (wtf), maybe that's something people from other continents (outside Europe) think? Anyway if you've been told that I'm so sorry to hear that, I never stop being amazed at people's stupidity 🤠

In Philippines, theres this bad habit called “Mañana” doing things later or “tomorrow” instead of now. They said we got it from Spaniards 😂. Siesta is only for school kids and farmers only though.

That is more from Latinoamericans which are more laid back (but this is also a stereotype, as you can find hard working people everywhere). Also siesta here is mostly just for kids and the elderly. No one really does siesta, at least during the week (its working time).

In polish slang there is the same word xD "maniana", spelled the same way and means doing something unthoroughly, it comes i guess just from stereotype of spanish and latinos, which is strange because not much people in poland speak spanish. Took me a lot of time to get used to the word mañana when I started to learn spanish.

I was just wondering why this is only exclusive for Spaniards in Europe while other southern European countries share the same weather. In the Phil, we were told that this bad habit originated from Spain but it also make sense if it came from Latin America since Phil was administered from Mexico back then.

As a New Yorker of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, it bugs me when people call me "spanish". Are we, Americans, English because we speak English? No. But I know what they mean and I'm not gonna fight over that. And plus it's an east coast thing. Even some Latinos call themselves "spanish". Still, 🇺🇸❤🇪🇸

I’m from Las Vegas and regularly go to California. Most Latinos here are Mexican and then some Central Americans (El Salvador and Guatemala mostly). Sprinkles of Cubans in LA and Vegas. I’ve literally never heard any call themselves Spanish over here. Even a lot of the Cubans and Northern Mexicans who look like straight Spanish people LOL I was so weirded out when visiting New York for the first time that people kept asking me if I was Spanish. I’d respond saying “my family is Central American” and they’d say “oh okay so you are Spanish” and I’d be really confused. Definitely an East Coast thing it was very odd

Siesta siesta siesta.....those introverts and socially-awkwards of Germanyy, UK and whatever above these, will never understand! Im a Mediterranean originally from Syria (and also lived in Lebanon, Turkey and Spain) people there usually specially in hot seasons, close their stores and go home to have lunch with family at some point between 1,30 pm -2,30 pm. Then, maybe take a nap and, get back to work at 5 pm and continue until something between 10pm and 12pm. This is typical in Mediterranean countries due to the nature of the weather. Because usually the streets get empty when the sun is too strong and that is between 1 pm and 5 pm.

All of these years i dont know what the spanish look like but i never know or no interes at all . But when i reviewed our philippine history and curious about spaniards look i guess i know😔

En España hay muchos acentos e incluso idiomas, es como decir "me gusta el acento de latinoamérica" o "me gusta el idioma de Asia".

I have been living in Barcelona for 4 years. I have met spanish people from different parts of spain. In general(of course not all people are the same anywhere), some positives are that people are friendly, though not as much as the Portugues, easy going and not wanting to put pressure on others, and many have active life style that postively influence the foreigners who live here. However the social circles are quite closed Some of the negatives are, they get emotional too easily, this often results in not handling work pressure well. A high level of recklessness and impetuousness, many do a lot of things and want to keep doing new things but lack the patience to do things well. You can witness all these in their politics and construction quality. The worst quality of all, in general, is with the men. Like men from many Mediterranean countries, you quite often meet men who just have to make a comment on the body of a woman passing by, especially those who married or who have a girlfriend. Stereotypes exist for a reason, but no matter where you live, you have to find the people you feel good to be around.

Thank you for your kind words, unfortunately I've heard from a lot of Uni-educated Spaniards how they've been asked if they're cleaners by the locals in the UK, like all the time .... and people being racist, especially after Brexit... It's great that foreigners perceive us as nice people but I wish they'd also not assume we're uneducated or unprofessional 🙁

It's sad that the world has such bad stereotypes of Spain, because after spending time in Spain I find that the opposite of the stereotypes is true. I hope that over time the old stereotypes will dissapear and people will have a better image of Spain that is more representative of reality.

Je dirais que 2-3 ans, la grammaire est très, très similaire mais si tu veux apprendre bien tous les verbes et leur conjugaisons, il y a trop d'exceptions/irregularités (sorry for my crappy French but yeah, basic Spanish 1 year, good Spanish 2 or 3 depending on how much time you wanna spend studying)

Los estereotipos existen por algún motivo, a veces se perpetúan y otras veces acaban desfasados... y con el tiempo aparecen otros estereotipos. Regionalmente también hay diferencias que hacen más complicado que un estereotipo se adapte a todos. Para mí, el más común entre los españoles es la cultura de bares: desde País Vasco a Andalucía, a la gente le encanta estar en la calle de pintxos, tapas o lo que sea, o sea, comer picoteando con una copa de vino o un vasito de cerveza y alargar la comida hasta el infinito.

Ése es quizás el estereotipo más realista, yo y mi círculo cercano no lo hacemos, pero sí lo veo en general. Y en otros países van al bar/pub o beben en casa, así que comparado con eso, tampoco es algo malo 😅

I believe that there is a lot of ignorance when talking about Spanish people. There is a phrase that says "La ignorancia es muy osada". Also there are lots of supremacists and xenophobic walking around (people that believe to be superior to other groups or nationalities, just for the sake of it). The fact is that they have no idea and they are just judgemental. When there is no language barrier, and communication is easy, barriers fall down, and one realizes that the differences are not so big.

Me ha tocado viajar bastante por el Mundo, menos el Extremo Oriente, y siempre cuando he dicho que soy español he notado mucha simpatía y aceptación, menos en una ocasión con una señora blanca sudafricana en Londres en 1975, que por cierto era arquitecto. Nos ha hecho mucho daño ese estereotipo que fue lanzado, ya antes de la Guerra, de flamencos, toreros, vagos, y siesteros, y acrecentado con el Franquismo. La mayoría de españoles ni sabemos cantar ni bailar flamenco, no comemos paella cada día nuestro carácter es abierto pero no folclórico y hemos tenido que trabajar mucho para sacar a nuestras familias adelante durante la post guerra. Así que no nos vengan algunos con rositas. He visitado bastante los países nórdicos y al que más Finlandia, muchos desearían vivir en España, no por el tópico del clima, sino cómo sabemos aprovechar el tiempo libre y la relación con la familia. Estoy harto de tanto mal flamenco, que de origen no es andaluz, más bien gitano.

Llevo 16 años viviendo en Finlandia y he oído todos esos estereotipos, de los cuales estoy totalmente en desacuerdo, pero jamás volvería a España. En mi opinión no se puede vivir bien si no tienes un sueldo digno o no tienes trabajo y no recibes prácticamente ninguna ayuda del Estado (no hablo de casos puntuales sino de que cualquier persona pueda recibir ayuda, como aquí)

@@armandons50 Puede parecer así, pero por ejemplo Alemania tiene más prestaciones sociales que España y más población y es un país más desarrollado. No digo que esté más desarrollado únicamente a causa de sus prestaciones sociales, sino que éstas no son un impedimento para el desarrollo, sino todo lo contrario. Obviamente podríamos hablar de políticas sociales y económicas hasta el fin de los tiempos, pero no es ésa mi intención 😅😉

@@inesbc2001 Noto entre líneas un cierto resentimiento hacia España. Supongo que tendrás tus razones para ello, pero deseo que logres superarlo. Suerte en Finlandia.

Estuve hace poco en Alemania y el nivel de ruido en las calles incluso en los sitios más frecuentados apenas superaba un murmullo. Aquí es inpensable. Ocho personas bastan para tener un alto nivel de ruido. Esto da a veces más ambiente. No digo que no pero he podido confirmar el estereotipo.

Hay diferencias muy grandes entre el sur, el centro y el norte de España con Andalucía y el Mediterráneo siendo las zonas más extremas en cuanto a ruido pero por supuesto, comparado con Alemania los españoles hablan muy alto. Lo bueno es que generalmente cuando bebemos no pasamos al otro extremo porque no necesitamos beber mucho para perder "la vergüenza". Es cuestión de gustos, a la mayoría de los españoles no les molesta (quizás a los del norte de España les molesta más). A mí personalmente no me gusta porque soy una persona tranquila y bueno, me mudé a Finlandia 😅, pero aquí mucha gente cuando bebe pierde el control y a veces asusta un poco. Quizás Alemania es el término medio y tenéis el balance perfecto 👌 😊

@@inesbc2001 No creo que Alemania sea el equilibrio perfecto, por lo menos cuando pienso en los turistas de fiestay borrachera en Mallorca. Me dan vergüenza ajena.

I'll never understand some of the restaurant and business hours in Spain. Open from noon to 3:00 pm. Close. Reopen at 8:00 pm. What is that??

It happens also in Italy. People normally have lunch at around 13:00/14:00 and have dinner at around 20:00/21:00, so it is really useless for the owners of the restaurants to be open during the afternoon: literally nobody would go in a restaurant during those hours.

I think you got the hours wrong. They’re usually closed from around 13:30 till 16:00/17:00, and they close for the day at 20:00/20:30. I’ve lived in the UK and they close shops at 17:00/18:00 and there’s nobody on the street while in Spain you can still see people outside running errands or whatever till around 21:00.

It has to do with the heat. From 12 to 15 or so in the summer it’s just too hot. So we just push our errands to the evening/ night. It makes all the sense in the world.

Yeap, pretty much. A few years ago there was a study about the fastest languages in the world, measured by the number of sounds uttered per second on average, and Spanish ranked 2nd, right before Japanese.

@@XanderVJ That's interesting, didn't know Japanese was so fast! Also this is just my perception but it seems to me that some Brits and US Americans as well as Italians speak really fast?

Otro estereotipo es el de que en España solo está Barcelona y la capital es Barcelona.

Desde Larinoamerica los veo como personas estructuradas(en el sentido de que se organizan mejor que nosotros), educadas, con buena posición económica, también muy liberales y de mente abierta, que les gusta ir a bailar. Aunque también demasiado envueltos en su propia realidad, no prestan demasiada atención al resto del mundo, a veces algo xenófobos.

Vamos, como vemos nosotros al norte de Europa. En lo de bailar creo que no tienes mucha razón, al menos en el centro y norte de España no somos mucho de bailar, no más que en otros países europeos y normalmente necesitamos alcohol para empezar 😅😅😅😅

Sobre lo de ser xenófobos, yo te diría que es cierto, pero no con todo el mundo. Noto que los españoles tenemos una considerable aversión hacia los hispanoamericanos, los marroquíes y los rumanos. Pero esto es porque una parte tristemente grande de los inmigrantes que vienen de allí son o delincuentes u holgazanes que vienen a vivir del Estado. A lo que voy es que no es por racismo; España nunca ha sido un país racista. Si eres de uno de estos tres lugares (o de cualquier otro del mundo) y vienes a España y demuestras ser una persona decente, lo normal es que, salvo por ciertos imbéciles, que siempre los hay, seas tratado/a con respeto, como a un igual.

@@spaniardkiwi2182 Dije xenófobos pero tal vez debería haber dicho racistas.. No todos, obvio, conozco personas de mi país que se fueron a España y los tratan muy bien, pero con un detalle: la mayoría y casi la totalidad de las personas que me dijeron eso tienen piel blanca y buena posición económica para los estándares de Latinoamérica. ¿No te parece coincidencia que las tres regiones a las que tienen adversión son lugares con un alto porcentaje de personas con color de piel o rasgos que no están asociados a la blanquitud? Que sí, que los latinos venimos en todos los colores, pero casualmente los blancos se adaptan rápido y no sufren mucha discriminación, y los que tienen rasgos indígenas o negros visibles nos traen historias de terror. Reflexioná sobre eso y decime que no es racismo.

@@camilagrgicevic2890 Pues es muy triste oír eso. Si es cierto lo que dices, entonces sí, sería racismo. Aunque me resulta extraño, porque he visto a muchos africanos, latinos y asiáticos con rasgos extranjeros muy marcados andar por la calle y entrar y salir en todo tipo de establecimientos con total tranquilidad sin verlos sufrir ni una sola vez cualquier tipo de maltrato, y he visto a otros en altísimas posiciones laborales (salvo en el poder político, que ahí casi todos son unos racistas y misóginos despreciables). Pero, claro, lo que yo haya observado no puede extrapolarse a todo el país. Sólo puedo decir que espero que nunca sufras racismo si alguna vez sales de Hispanoamérica.

Una gran parte de latinoamericanos tienen el pensamiento de que en España, tratan a los latinos como el estereotipo estadounidense con los inmigrantes o negros. Pues yo creo que racismo hay en todo el mundo, solo que especialmente se piensa que ahí prevalece un poco más.

Sí, es verdad, en España hay bastante racismo, también afecta a gente del centro y este de Europa. Ha aumentado mucho desde la crisis financiera del 2008, hay mucho desempleo en España y eso hace que la gente no quiere que vengan extranjeros a los cuales a veces contratan por un salario más bajo, pero eso nunca da derecho a tratar mal a una persona 😬🙁

Don't learn French, learn spanish... Spanish is useful... Lots of people speak spanish as their first language and many speak it as a second language besides there are lots of countries You can visit

Hola soy Estadounidense de descendencia Colombiana. Creo que aquí se tiene una imagen bastante positiva de España, por más folclórica o flamenca que sea, no deja de ser una imagen positiva. La de un país relativamente prospero, con muchísima historia, monumentos y tal. Lo de la siesta si no lo he escuchado mencionar, creo que Don Quijote y Sancho panza se pegaban sus buenas siestas, puede que tenga algo que ver con esa idea. 🤔

Mais si tu parles de descendance medieval donc mes ancêtres sont venu d'Espagne, France, Suède, Irlande, Colombie (en core) de l'Afrique et qui sait où d'autre. Si tu es français donc vos ancêtres sûrement ont emmigré à la France de l'Italie avec les Romains, de l'Allemagne avec les Francs et Wisigoths, les steppes d'Asie avec les Gaulois et au delà de l'Eurasie touts nos ancêtres ont originé en Afrique Oriental. Et alors ? Pourquoi est-ce qu'on peut pas dire qu'on est d'origine Colombienne si c'est là d'où sont venu mes parents, ou le nouveau monde ne compte pas?

@@martinsalazar1142 Parce que les ethnies européennes asiatiques et africaines sont anciennes et se trouvent au même endroit depuis des milliers d'années, ne se mélangeant avec d'autres ethnies indigènes que depuis 10 000 avant JC, avec une culture et une génétique qui se sont développées naturellement, la culture colombienne est une culture qui est née avec la colonisation européenne. El flamenco en realidad ni es de España, en realidad lo trajeron los gitanos desde Paquistán, además decir que alguien es flamenco es decir que es neerlandés, ya que flamenco es el gentilicio de Flandes, región de Países Bajos

Yo soy frances y yo tengo una imagen muy positiva de Espana. Generalmente aqui los estereotipos so re Espana nunca son que Espana es un desastre como unos idecen, pero son positivos, como tapas, ciudades con mucha animacion, clima agradable, gente simpatica... los problemos economicos no son una especialidad de Espana. Cada vez que visito a espana la veo con admiracion por su limpieza, cultura, respecto, vida, identidad, tradicion con modernidad... mucho mejor comparativamente a la situacion terrible de Francia ahora,

Yo estuve en Francia en ile de France y las familias de acogida sabían mucha cultura española pero de español solo sabían decir agua y pez, lo de la cultura lo digo porque nos llamaban gatos, ya que somos de Madrid.

hola, es verdad, cada pais tiene un esteriotipo y la mayoria de las personas de cada pais, pues no se siente que es la verdad!!! por ejemplo, Irlanda, de que todos beben muchisimo, y bueno pues si es cierto que se bebe mucha cerveza, pero en todo europa se bebe mucho!!! que los espa;oles son ruidosos, pues comparado con los paises del norte de europa si son de fiesta y ruido , yo veo programas de tve donde hablan de que los muchachos hacen botellon, hasta tardisimo, dejan mucha basura, etc... y dias de la semana, no solo en fin de semana, claro pero muchos no lo hacen!!!! posiblemente la mayoria sobretodo si ya tienen un trabajo formal, y luego los italianos, ruidosos, que les gusta vestir y gastan muchisimo en eso, y bueno que todos comen pizza, pues bien no todos!!! y Grecia donde nadie paga sus impuestos!!!! sera verdad ???? y Estadosd Unidos... pues donde todos viven como en Hollywood, pues no, hay una mitad de la poblacion de ellos que no han hecho la universidad, que no tienen pasaporte y nunca han salido del pais, y donde viven bastante mal !!!! entonces tampoco es la realidad... Y luego Mexico, donde todos son narcos , delincuentes, y flojos, pues tampoco es cierto!!! la mayoria no son narcos ni delicuentes, hay una pobreza extrema y un gobierno totalmente corrupto, pero la mayoria de la gente trabaja honestamente y pues no se identifican con el esteriotipo.. total puedo seguir diciendo muchos paises... y yo creo que en su mayoria no se identifica

Totalmente de acuerdo contigo. Los estereotipos son generalmente impresiones muy superficiales que no representan ni el país y tampoco el individuo medio. Están utilizados par gente que conoce muy poco de lo que habla.

me gustó este video pero me pregunto si no sería mejor preguntarle a gente no española que ha vivido mucho tiempo en españa de cómo es el país? poca gente va a criticar su propia cultura / país. y/o reconocer diferencias. por ejemplo soy estadounidense y hay el estereotipo de que somos muy ruidosos y ignorantes pero si le preguntas a la mayoría de estadounidense te dirían que no es así... si le preguntas a un francés...

Es algo contraproducente la verdad, hay muchos extranjeros que forman sus propias "microcolonias" (sobre todo expats Britanicos y Alemanes) y nunca crecen fuera del estereotipo

Y yo de hecho sí creo a alguien de EEUU cuando me dicen que no es verdad que seáis ignorantes, porque sé que por ejemplo los vídeos que circulan por ahí de estadounidenses que ni siquiera saben señalar su propio país en un mapamundi no representan en absoluto el nivel de educación general de todo el país, y están elegidos a posta para ser "graciosos"...
