Northern Spain is now a Must-Visit - Here's Why

After last year's pretty darn hot summer, we decided to spend ALL of August in Galicia, northwestern Spain. And in this video, we share what we love about it!

Not only is Northern Spain criminally underrated, it's also one of the best places to make content - lost villages, American-Spanish history, world class gastronomy, and Spain's most impressive landscapes. Anytime I go up there I can't help but make videos. You nailed it with this one, as always.

I only hope that Northern Spain doesn't become so popular that they ruin it for the locals as it happened with nearly all of the Mediterranean coastline (pollution, destruction of natural areas, increased cost of housing and living, etc.) We're still on time to protect these areas from gentrification and mass tourism.

It's happening, unfortunately. Here in San Sebastian, which is a beuatiful city, the massification of tourists, and the fact that everything is almost exclusively for the tourists, made the city one of the most expensive to live in. Locals are starting to make graffities against tourists, as they did in Venice, for example. I mean, we are very pleased with tourism! But we don't like seeing out cities (and, eventualy, all the north), so gentrified that we're pushed to go live somewhere else because everything is made for tourists.

Galicia is great and well worth a visit. I'm Irish and feel very at home there, the climate suits me much more than the hotter parts of Spain. It reminds me of the west of Ireland. It has the same mystical vibe. And the people are very down to earth and friendly. Also love when I get served a local wine, often in a small bowl.

There's no Rias, so seafood is more restricted to fish and octopus only, but the rest is same salad, sardines on charcoal, and much more pork. Go down to Porto. Porto gave name to Portugal, and Portuguese comes from Galician.

But, now, I want to return. I visited the Celtic ruins of Baroña which is on the Atlantic. I was fascinated by its castros, acropolis, spirit and beauty of the place. I don't have the time to write about everything that Galicia has to offer. It has so much! Go visit it. You won't regret it. It is worth it!

I have enjoyed the videos that you do about wines, sherry, vermut, etc. I was wondering, would it be interesting or possible to do a video about distinctive regional drinks like Pacharan or different liqueurs? I suspect that there are some rather lesser know ones and sometimes even traditions associated. I remember that my mother's family was sometimes drinking anisette over ice after dinner. OR, even better, how about specialty pastries? Bakeries all over Spain are full of local specialties, breads and desserts, particular to the region. Oviedo, for example, has a wonderful pastry called carbayon. Then there's that cool lizard like ring thing from Toledo that is made around Navidades.

Hidden in our mountains, ready to ambush the legions. But you are one of the smart ones, and finally you've found us. Welcome to la tierruca, now this is your home too. And yes, all the north of Spain is beautiful. But in the middle of the north, the old castillian port of Santander is the jewel. The beauty of Comillas, Bárcena Mayor, Laredo, los valles pasiegos, and off course Santander and the Magdalena Palace...I guess you know all that places, but anyway. They are some drops of paradise on earth.

Hi Guys, I really enjoyed the video. Last year I bought my car from a dealer in Vigo and so we drove across Spain, from the high desert of Almeria to do so. It's a long way. 4 hours to Madrid, an hour and a half around Madrid and then another 5 hours or so to Vigo. We enjoyed seeing the landscape change as we went. Dry mountains goving way to the central plain, and then more hills, but all green this time. And river valleys with water in them at the bottom! It's a shame but after that long drive we were too tired to stay up late and go to dinner. So the lobster for my wife and crab for me never happened, but we did drink a nice local bottle of Albarino in the hotel. I liked Vigo. Your video reminded me we need to go back and have a more leisurely tour. And get into the local seafood. And yes, the car is still going well. Yours from the hot desert, J P Williams

Now everyone and their dog are obsessed with the north of Spain and planning to visit or move. It's the last trend as far as tourism in Spain goes. It's been on the news and social media the whole effin summer. Of course it's beautiful and many people knew it... Now I guess it's going to be ridiculously (more) crowded... Me aburroooo!!! Nice video btw.

We first moved near Gijon in Asturias from the UK. Managed 6 months before had to move as it rains as much as in England up there! Is an absolutely beautiful area, stunning nature and scenery but yeah, is very cold and wet most of the time. We left the UK because of the rain so seemed crazy we moved somewhere that had the same kind of rainfall.

@@AlbieSol560 yes each to their own. I have a son and grandkids in Barcelona, and we would dearly like to visit in summer. And babysit the kids, but it is way to hot at often 30-33C , so I cannot stand that. I really do not understand why some folk like to feel sweaty and listless all the time. I would prefer the climate in northern Spain. We spent 10 days there in late Oct 2016, and temps were around 13-16C, we only had a little rain 1 day. It was lovely. House prices in San Sebastián are the highest in Spain for a reason, demand.

Walking the ruta de la playas from Marin to Aldan in the fresher months is wonderful. Also a pity (the majority) of the furanchos are not open in Summer months, which are definitely worth a visit.

What a lovely video and thank you for taking us along on your adventures - such a lovely family. I am definitely in love with Galicia and it was the right place for me to settle down in Europe. It lacks the excitement of Madrid but it matches my temperament to live in SDC most of the year and rent a place in Madrid for a couple of months out of the year. Food is cheap, usually local, and rent is affordable.
