Can you please make one on Mohamed Ameziane was a leader of the Riffian resistance against the Spanish occupation of Northern Morocco who fought more than 100 battles against the Spanish colonization and caused a great conflict in Spain where the Spanish people demonstrated against the government. Ameziane is the only Amazigh Riffian resistance leader who fought to death and was never caught or bought off.

A error at 0:26 its not a part of the Amazigh identity. Only the Riffians see it as part of their identity(Arabo-Berber identity). The truth is that the Rif Republic was a Arab centric state. Its anthem was in Arabic, its school system was in Arabic, its currency was in Arabic, its official language was in Arabic, plus the state saw it self as part of the Ummah-al-Arabiyah. Not to mention that Abdelkerim Khattabi was a member of the Arab Maghreb commitee. It has maybe ties to the Riffian identity but it doenst have anything to do with other Amazigh/Berber identities

My great grandfather fought this war from the Spanish side, getting a medal after a several-day hunt of a sniper that was killing soldiers in their most vulnerable moment (at the letrines). He was later injured and was not involved in the civil war because of it, probably saving his life. Respect to the amazigh and may prosperity and brotherhood come between all of our Mediterranean neighbors!

My great grandfather also fought for Spain in this war. He came back alive, but didn't do anything glorious. My grandfather told me that he used to use dead bodies to cover himself in blood to fake an injury, so that other friendly soldiers went first, and he didn't get shot. Respect to all of our neighbours in Morocco, may you be in a prosperous country.

I'm British and I moved to southern Spain last year. I live a 20 minute drive from the south coast and Gibraltar where the North African coast is only 8 miles away. Whenever I visit Gibraltar I can see the Moroccan coast extremely clearly and it's a pretty cool site

Great episode as usual👏, but you made a small mistake : In 1904, the Moroccan lands were not yet divided among the European powers, as you mentioned 0:38 the kingdom of Morocco was still at that time an independent country despite its weakness and decline. What happened that year is that France and Britain concluded the "The Entente Cordiale", according to which France waived its claim to "Egyptian Sudan" in favor of Britain in return for Britain not objecting to France's ambitions in Morocco (This Entente Cordiale between the two countries came to resolve the Fashoda crisis, which would have ignited a war between them). It was one of the most important agreements that contributed to drawing the first features of the network of tripartite alliances (the Allies and Central powers) that would form the warring parties in the WWI As for the occupation of Morocco and the division of its lands between France and Spain, it didn't take place until the year 1912 , according to the Treaty of Fez (Treaty of Protectorat) between the Moroccan Sultan and the French authorities, according to which the Kingdom of Morocco was divided into three European spheres of influence. (the French zone, and Spanish zone, and international Tangiers)

The Moroccan Sultan never had power or reigned among the Riffians. In 1956, Spain in particular and France decided to criminally gift the sovereignty of the Rif Republic to Morocco.

Awesome episode! In the context of Morocco, the Entente's deterrence target was Germany and the possibility that it might form a relationship with a fully independent Morocco that would give the German Navy access where Britain and France least wanted it. See First and Second Moroccan Crises. The upshot of the First Moroccan Crisis and subsequent Algeciras Conference was to show Germany just how diplomatically isolated it was. Even the United States, partly because of the Perdicaris affair but also because of Pacific and other areas of conflict, and Germany's nominal ally Italy didn't want Morocco under greater German influence. Every country but Austria-Hungary, the least influential power (again in the Moroccan context) at that Conference, backed France. Morocco was a significant lever by which European tensions increased before World War 1.

May I add that Abdelkareem was so famous in the Arab world, especially in the Levant to such an extent that the national song of the Rif was written by then-famous Lebanese composer, Mohammed Flayfel. To have an idea of who he was, Mohammed Flayfel is also credited for discovering the talents of a young Feyrouz when she participated in a radio talent show. Feyrouz, 87 years old, is considered today a diva in the Arab world. But the story doesn't end here. The song of Abdelkareem got so famous that a few years after the collapse of Abdelkareem's state, the words of the hymn were modified by another Lebanese artist for the purpose of adapting it to the new Republic of Lebanon. It still is the national anthem of Lebanon today, some 100 years later!

25:10 The Dédalo was amongst the first generation of aircraft carriers, being similar to HMS Hermes. Being converted from a merchant ship that had been seized by Spain from Germany after WW1 as "payment" for the losses inflicted on Spain, it could carry 22 airplanes: 1 fighter/recon squadron and 1 light bomber squadron. It was instrumental during the landing of Alhucemas as the beach was heavily defended, and the planes flew several sorties both for bombing enemy positions and for giving intel for bombardment by the Spanish fleet (which consisted of most of the Spanish navy, including our two capital ships: the Alfonso XIII and the Jaime I).

Thank you for covering this chapter of the history of Morocco, I myself from Xauen or Chefchaouen (the blue city). I wanted to add that the Ghomara and Jbala tribes are arabized and speak the jebli dialect of Arabic, so we don't self identify as Rifi. This may had caused some distrust between the Jebli and Rifi tribes. However, despite the ethnic differences, a large part of Raissouni's Jebli forces sided with ElKhatabi after he submitted to the Spaniards.

The jebli people are arab speaking mountain peoples with amazigh ancestry, they are also mixed with the andalusian muslim refugees that fled spain and portugal. Their arabic was also very influenced by andalusian arabic.

The chapter about "Africanists" against "Abandoners" is a bit more complex. After the war in Cuba, the lack of soldiers produced an inevitable excess of officers, so their promotion to higher jobs bacame imposible. That is why those who were stationed in Africa took advantage of what they called "war merits" to achieve those promotions, in detriment of their colleagues stationed elsewhere. The "Africanistas" were the officers who were in favor of promotions for war merits (from which they benefited), while those who were against this procedure were known as "junteros" (since they belonged mostly to the defense "juntas" boards). Traditionally, artillerymen and engineers (who spent more years in military academies than infantry and cavalry officers) took an oath not to accept promotions for war merits, in solidarity with the rest of their peers.

The so-called Popular Front only had itself to blame, when Catholics, businessmen, and traditionally-minded folk organized to defend themselves against the illegitimate regime. Well, before leading a Legion Battalion or “Bandera”, Franco had been commanding native troops (“regulares”) for quite some time, and was a popular commander among his soldiers (more than among his fellow officers). He always cared for their well being. Then, Morrocan soldiers in the Spanish Army and police, might come from many different regions and tribes. In 1936, probably few if any of the Moroccan men within the “Regulares”, “Mehal-la” or “Tiradores” would come from the Beni Uriaguel… In fact, it is not surprising that so many fought in the Spanish Army. They also badly needed the pay they received plus the opportunity to loot…

This was a great video. The Rif War is seriously overlooked, and outside of history nerds like the people who make these great videos and watch them, barely anyone knows about this conflict. There's a pretty cool book I just finished reading titled, "France, Spain, and the Rif" by Walter B. Harris. It was written right after the war was over by an Englishman who lived in Tangier, and was very familiar with the local forces. It's kind of a hard book to find, and its not a great historical account compared to newer sources such as this, but its pretty much the only book dedicated to the entire conflict from all sides. It might be of interest to some.

My grandfather was a young lieutenant in the foreign Legion, in his letters to my late grandmother you can see he tried to diminish the danger. I never knew him, nor did my own old father since he was shot in 1944 in France as a Resistant. There is some irony in it, some might say it was karma. My father never came to terms with the fact his own father was a colonial officer during a 'pacification' operation. I wish peace to everyone.

The Spanish Civil War is still an unfinish event in Spain. The actual political scenario in Spain is still influenced by that war and is a very sensitive topic. Very difficult to separate the history from the politics.

I absolutly loved this video! I just missed an epic episode during the spanish route in Annual: seeing the disaster that was taking place the Alcantara Regiment charged into the enemy to cover their fellow soldiers. Virtually all the regiment perished in the epic sacrifice, including the vets and smiths that were deployed with the regiment as they refused to retreat and charge the enemy with the rest of the regiment instead

They fought to the end while allowing the Communists to eject them from the government and withhold weapons and supplies. If the Republic had won they would have been purged like the Greens in Russia.

I would argue that the tactically poor decision to split from the other rojos was based in ideology and not sound strategy which directly left them and their former allies no chance of survival. As a pragmatist I don't have much sympathy for people who make emotional decisions like that. I'd argue that with an ideology like that, no nation can survive.

Riffans arent moroccan . The moroccans sided with france and spain . After the independence the king opressed and killed many riffans . Alot of them left to europe and they hate morocco

That being said, I wish well all the people of the lands, across all races, religions, and identities. Thank you for your comment though as I started to read more on the Riff and Riffian People and their history and toils.

Spain never really wanted to occupy the Rif, it had Ceuta and Melilla for centuries as part of Spain and there was no need to take over such hostile territory. It was France and England that both claimed the area and that Spain had it was the most "neutral". It was after the mineral sources were discovered that Spain became interested in the territory and began to build railways to extract it.

As a Riffian, I'm very thankful for this well-detailed video and the efforts it took.

As a Riffian I would like to thank you for your effort for making such a sublime video about our history.

My family fought the spanish there, as tribal allies to the riffans! IIRC they kept crossing the borders, since our lands were in french controlled morocco and the French at first didn't want to anger the region so they weren't very involved in patrolling the borders.

Well, Abdelkrim might have been great, but he was not “Morroco.”. You might have said that the Rif Republic fought Spain, France and the Morrocan Sultan: That would have been a correct statement.
