    The Space Marines Gunships are absolutely vital to the combat doctrines that have been honed for ten thousand years of active service. The Storm Talon Gunship is vital in providing cover fire for the ground forces, and it is an honor piloting any gunship of the Space Marine Chapters. Only foolish enemies will have the gall in dogfighting against these veterans pilots and think they have a hope of winning in the engagement.

    "Entry achieved ‘ Traitor’s blood.’ Brother-Pilot Raziel fought to hold his Storm Eagle steady as it speared into the fourth planet’s atmosphere. The muscles in his arms begged for respite as strong winds vied with him for control of the craft. They battered against the Spear’s hull and clawed over its wings, threatening to tear him off course. The Storm Eagle shuddered, rattling as though under fire. A blanket of jet-black cloud rushed up to meet the armourglass of the cockpit, drawing a further curse from Raziel. Even with the Storm Eagle’s bank of sensors, his armour’s autosenses and his own enhanced vision, he couldn’t see the nose of his craft. The diodes and instrumentation sharing the cockpit blinked in a quickening irregular rhythm as the gunship’s machine-spirit vented its own frustration. Struggling to maintain speed and trajectory, Raziel opened a vox channel to the nearest Thunderhawk in formation. ‘Spear of Sanguinius to Baal’s Fury, situation critical. Report.’ A raft of static screamed back in his ear. He tried again, snarling under another barrage of white noise. ‘Raziel, what in the Emperor’s name is going on? I’ve had smoother emergency drops,’ Manakel said over the internal comm. ‘Be thankful we’re still in the air, brother-sergeant,’ Raziel replied. ‘Atmospheric conditions are worsening by the second and the auguries are returning gibberish. We’re flying blind.’ ... " - The Flesh Tearers Chapter gunships during the first landing on the Death-world of Cretacia. =][= "The Thunderhawk gunship loomed out of the clouds like a monstrous bird of prey, wings spread, turbines growling, airbrakes flared to slow it for landing. It was black, its fuselage marked with three symbols: the Imperial aquila, noble and golden; the ‘I’ of the Emperor’s holy Inquisition, a symbol even the righteous knew better than to greet gladly; and another symbol, a skull cast in silver with a gleaming red, cybernetic eye. Derlon Saezar didn’t know that one, had never seen it before, but it sent a chill up his spine all the same. Whichever august Imperial body the symbol represented was obviously linked to the holy Inquisition. That couldn’t be good news..." =][= "...The newly appointed Techmarine watched as the shuttle broke through the turbulent layers of storm cloud. Atraxii’s attention locked to the pair of dark wedge shapes flanking it on either side. The Stormhawk interceptor was a compact fighter craft of roughly avian aspect. Its main fuselage protruded from beneath angular, forward-swept wings, sandwiched between a pair of turbine propulsion drives that gave it the look of a pit hound, with shoulders packed with dense muscle. Twin assault cannons tipped the wings, and Atraxii saw missile tubes built into the fuselage, with a formidable las-talon slung beneath the cockpit. There was no armourglass on the fighter, no transparent canopy for the pilot to see through. In its place, a cluster of sensor nodes packed a narrow slit in the craft’s armoured prow. The two Stormhawks peeled away to either side as the shuttle descended, their escort duty done. Atraxii glimpsed a silver icon, a cog with bladed wings, glinting in the wan light from their flanks. ‘Your squadron,’ said Atraxii, nodding to the Stormhawks as they rapidly shrank from view. ‘Affirmative,’ replied Oblexus, also watching as the pilots of his elite unit departed. ‘They are of the Medusan Wing.’ ..." - " The Medusan Wing" "The city was ablaze. Sergeant Kerikus pushed down on the stick and the Wrath of Aquila dropped into a dive, the baleful roar of the gunship’s engines echoing through the blasted streets. Ruined buildings stretched up on either side like a canyon, debris from below whipped up in the Stormtalon’s wake. Flying this close to the battle-ravaged streets was risky. The slightest miscalculation would bring certain death. A bank of burned-out towers rushed towards him. If Kerikus did not pull up soon the Stormtalon would carom into their blackened shells. Even a split second of hesitation would be fatal. Behind his battle-helm, the sergeant’s cold grey eyes narrowed. He was a Doom Eagle. There would be no hesitation, no indecision. No second chance. The hulking land transporter thundered ahead, thick barbed wheels churning up the already ravaged road. He had spotted the dense smoke belching from its engine from a kilometre away, his mouth instinctively curling in disgust. He could almost smell the foul reek of the scum hanging from the rust-eaten plating and hear their stupid cries of alarm as his Stormtalon swung around behind them. The orks were swarming over the truck now, trampling over each other to reach the oversized gun turret that was bolted haphazardly to the transporter’s uneven roof. Others had produced crude hand weapons, almost tumbling from the racing vehicle in their eagerness to bring him down. ‘Not this time.’ As stubber fire danced across the Stormtalon’s nose, an automatic rune flared on Kerikus’s helm-display, side-mounted lascannons locked and ready to fire. Kerikus thumbed the trigger and the transporter immediately erupted into a ball of incandescent flame. The Stormtalon tore through the sudden inferno, the heat of the blast scorching the Wrath’s silver undercarriage. Kerikus pulled up sharply, simultaneously rolling to the right. The gunship banked, rushing towards a gap between the oncoming buildings - an exceptionally tight gap. If Kerikus belonged to any other Chapter he may have stopped to question the wisdom of running such a space. If Kerikus had belonged to any other Chapter he would be dead. The Stormtalon sped through the gap with inches to spare. No hesitation. Kerikus only breathed again once the Wrath had climbed to a safe distance. The manoeuvre had been dangerous - foolhardy even - but it had also been necessary. The stinking creatures crammed into that transporter would have bolstered the ork defence. Some would argue that a few less greenskins would not make any difference, that the capital of Quadcana had already been lost. They would also probably misinterpret his determination for a death wish. While the Doom Eagles accepted, and even embraced, their mortality, they did not long for death and glory. Death was inevitable. What mattered was your service to the Emperor in the years, or even seconds, before you breathed your last. Kerikus came about, soaring above the city limits. He glanced at the tactical display, activating a status report with a blink. The entire squadron had been lost. On the screen, a solitary signal flared on the map of the city: the Wrath of Aquila, the last gunship in the air.

    I'm imagining a dreadnought ponderously hanging beneath the drop ship. It's cabin filled with New Primaris and old hand of a pilot. As we cut into the scene the only thing louder than the roar of the atmospheric entry is the snores of the dreadnought over the squad coms. The Primaris sgt opened a line to the pilot, "is the elder ok?" The pilot held a laugh. "Oh yeah he likes to get a quick nap in before a battle. You would not believe the things I've seen him sleep through." Moments later as they neared the landing site the dreadnought snores ceased and after a few beats more the comms spoke, "Honored Pilot, drop us here instead." A new point alit on the pilots auspex, "Fly me closer I wish to hit them with my fists."

    The gunship jinked and sideslipped, dodging the hail of ground fire before settling in the very heart of the battle. It's weaponry, however remained silent. The battling imperials and xenos ceased fighting and watched in awe as the landing ramp was lowered to the ground, just the hum of servo motors was heard over the now silent battle field. A lone figure, bereft of armour or insignia descended the ramp, grasping an ancient tome in their hands, and regarded the assembled masses of combatants with a baleful eye. The figure finally spoke in sonorous tones. "Welcome gentle listeners, I am Baldermort, your faithful servant." Ennnnd QUOTE. Baldermorts guides just get better and better. It's a cruel world.

    "We were preapring for an grav jump into the Greenskins. Little was our hope to slay the Boss of the horde but we need to hold the line, for our comrades, the civilians but before all, for the Emperor. As we fight the Greenskin tide comming even we can't hold them forever. We need to slay the Boss quickly to break their onslought. Then we heared it. The howling of big turbines growing louder and louder, even louder than the Orks mad shouts. The next moments are only hazy in my memory because we saw his Angels of Death screaming down on jumppacks right into the fray. The White clad Astartes charge into the Bossmob to slay the Warchief. The hovering Stormraven, that droped them of, together with an Stormtalon swooping over are laying covering fire of Bolter, Las and Missel fire into the Greenskin Horde, cutting of and hinder reinforcements. Over them even higher Stormhawks fighting the crude but effective Jets and bombers of the Orks to give cover from airattacks. We gained new hope and knew we NEED to hold the line behind the Angels to give their attack enough time to cut the head of the beast. It was a hazy fight and after it was done the Astartes moved on instantly. All we remember clearly would be the sound of howling engines and the lightning Symbol on the shoulders and flyers of the Astartes that saved us that day." I’ve often wondered why atmospheric fliers exist in WH40K. The weapons being wielded by the ground troops are more than capable of knocking them from the sky, sure, that’s the case in war today. But in WH40K, there are insanely well armed ships *above* them, in orbit. Attacking like a hawk hiding in the sun as it dives upon its prey, you’d think the amount of destruction the orbiting fleets would deal out on atmospheric ships would be enough to make them irrelevant. At such a short range as the handful of miles between the planet’s surface and low orbit, lasers aimed by targeting servitors that can land shots across tens of thousands of miles in a space engagement should be instant death for any opposing gun ship.

  • @jeova0sanctus0unus

    @jeova0sanctus0unus

    Well. You can not really Fire Lances at strikecraft. I dont know why, but the lore is pretty clear about that. Maybe the tracking equipment is not accurate enough, who knows. I have had it suggested that a lance has to remain aimed at the same relative point in space to charge for a few seconds before firing, meaning that you would have to predict the course of a dodging gunship for several seconds, which is not easy. (to be clear, i dont thing there is evidence in the lore for this explanation.) You could try to hit a low flying plane by firign at the ground below it, hope the blast hits it. Which is possible, but causes massive colateral damage. which is annoying of you acutally want to keep the world afterward. Additionally. There are fleets in warhammer, yes... but what if your fleet is defeated or still engaged in a space action, or even worse, if your fleet is needed elsewhere right the fuck now? A robust roster of Aircraft can help you breach AA Defences that are designed to take out your Dropships, and protect the landingzone from Armored colums, or infantry, or provide close air support much faster than any fleet, because the fleet would need to conduct space to ground targeting. Which takes time, and a minuscule error can result in you vaporizing your own lines. Finally, i suspect a reason why Planes exist is because Orbital Strikes are expensive. And sometimes overkill. each ship is crewed by tens of thousands, and requires countless tons of materials. while Most flyers are crewed by 6 guys, and a servitor. And are a dime a thousand, compared to anyting spacegoing. Thus, i suspect it is the simple economy of Force. Remember, you always want to use the minimum amout of force that can still get the job done. In reality, like real real reality. Fliers exist in 40k for the same reason guardsmen, predators and the Avatar of Khaine exist. Because GW want to sell you models.

    jeova0sanctus0unus If they can hit a target tens of thousands of miles away in space with a laser, a target moving at thousands of miles per hour mind you, there should be no reason they can’t hit a target moving much more slowly only a couple of miles away.

    Catnium If they can fire at a spaceship moving at 25,000 kph in space, why wouldn’t they be able to get a target lock on something moving 150 kph?

    @@SigRho1429 If a (real world) battleship can hit another battleship at 30 km range, why cant it then hit an Airplane at half that range? Answer is: It can. But it is in no way designed to do that, and would be nightmarishly inefficient. additionally. The absolute speed of the target it meaningless, the angular velocity is what matters, which will decreast with range. I will also note that they are most likely not using lances against mere strikecraft because that would be a waste of money. remember every shot imposes wear and tear on a Lance batters. And if you constantly use your Lances against strikecraft they will soon require replacement, or loose performance. Additionally, in ongoing space combat, there is a huge opportinity cost to wasting lance shots against Strikecraft, when point defence and your own fighters exist. You could be shooting bit ships with that lance. or transform a Bunker complex into a crater, or generally to things that matter, instead of this study in overkil.

    Brother Bobimus trudged forward with his squad to aid his chapter master against the swarmlord. Corpses of tyranid littered the ground, their filth surrounding their dead honourable battle brothers. However, the clicking noises Bobimus heard kept getting louder and more numerous. It was as if the ground was alive. He asked, "Captain Titus, why do I hear the ground speaking?" He could barely finish his query when hundreds of hormagaunts, once thought dead, sprang to life around him. "They are coming from below as well! From the tunnels!" He shouted before a claw ripped through his vox caster for the killing blow. "Some folks were born, made to wave the flag, oo the blue, blue, and blueeee!" Calgar forced himself a smile as the song "Fortunate Son of Ultramar" --composed by none other than the vain Cato Sicarius himself-- blared from the approaching thunderhawk gunships clearing an LZ for the beleaguered ultramarines. As brother Forester Gumpius dragged his limbless body to the gunship, Calgar realized he should have started that shrimping business instead of signing up for Bobby G's marine corps.

    I wish there was a way to play a massive campaign game with ships fighting for void supremacy dropping down aircrafts like dark clouds clearing the way for rain of steel culminating in a massive all out war above, beyond, on, beneath the planet but at last muscles ache and wallets must be conserved. Also baldermort can you put links for connected audio dramas? It might not be hard to search now but it’ll pile up eventually and make it a bit more convenient
