    This video alone influenced my mma game entirely. I was new to practicing combat sports when I was 23. I didn’t wrestle but watched this video so I started wrestling with my right leg forward. I believe I’m a decent anti wrestler for someone who didn’t wrestle in high school. Fast forward 1 1/2 years later I start Muay Thai. I knew I wanted to train mma so that meant I had to learn southpaw if I wanted to flow with my takedowns. Even though I’m right handed and can strike in both stances I now feel safer in southpaw than orthodox. Still got a lot to learn though

    Great video! I always wondered about this.. I recently started hitting up the different gyms in my town and just follow whatever instructions they usually set. I am fairly ambidextrous and hope to train that way. When leading with kicks I tend to prefer Southpaw and when boxing I tend to prefer Orthodox. I often approach the bag in my apartment with a Southpaw stance for boxing but It's really day to day.. I am a trained professional drummer (jazz specifically) which usually emphasizes complete independence of all 4 limbs. I started off open handed (or left handed) and I even clap left handed. I also skateboard a lot, in skateparks specifically, so I skate a lot of switch stance when doing multiple trick runs (switching lead leg). I love to dance and, you know, walk, so basically I've spent 35 years practicing ambidexterity, so hopefully I can find some coaching that helps me capitalize on my natural tendency to switch stance. I moved back to a small town that's pretty ol' school so pickings are slim! I also only had one real fight in my adulthood which resulted in a win with only 4 left strikes so I'm not sure what that means.. Any questions, comments, insults and trolling is welcomed. I like a good thread!

    That is a funny thing. I started learning Judo when I was about seven years old and, until today, I simply cannot say which stance is more comfortable to me. I am not stating I am a great fighter, maybe I am equally bad in both stances. Anyway, my coach never asked me wether I was left or right handed, and I guess I just developed into it without having a main stance (maybe it is even a little more comfortable to lead with my left, even though I am right handed, but maybe that is just because I later trained boxing as an Orthodox). I started training boxing and muay thai later and, since I am right handed, I always trained as an Orthodox (today I am starting to occasionally train my right hand as lead, but it is just to be able to use it here and then, because I know I will never have the same dexterity as a southpaw than as an Orthodox in boxing). I had never really thought about it, but maybe my coach was right on letting us develop naturally into our own stances.

    I was originally a traditional right handed orphidox but I have now converted to southpaw and I have found much more success in this stance than the orphidox stance. As example in the southpaw stance I can lead with my right and land hard, fast, and more accurate jabs then follow up with a left cross. But in orphidox I had trouble fighting with my left in front. For example when I was faced against southpaws I would almost always get caught with a over hand left but now that I'm southpaw I can fend them off more easily now with hard lead hooks and jabs.

    Been saying this for years! I never understood why someone wrestled half their life with the right leg in front and then some of these striking coaches are dead set on making them switch for striking? Honestly they are just to uneducated to realize if someone is a life long wrestler that their first instinct will probably be to wrestle and not strike to begin with.

  • @angelsjoker8190

    @angelsjoker8190

    Probably, because they are just striking coaches working at an MMA gym, not MMA-striking coaches. As an MMA-coach, even if specialized in one area, you have to keep in mind that your area is only one part of the puzzle the fighter needs to put together, and your area has to work seamlessly together with the other areas. And additionally, most striking coaches are not very knowledgeable in teaching the intricacies of a Southpaw, so they mostly just teach orthodox, and if they have an orthodox fighter, they tell him just to "mirror".

    I was thinking about this the other day. Boxing pre-1900's had people put thier strong side forward, but they stopped after gloves got introduced. About 40% of mma fighters use southpaw. Lots of karate guys do it too, it gives them better side kicks and jabs.

    I think most of us wrestlers should learn to strike left handed with an emphasis on the jab. Or you can take an open stance but I don’t think you will ever be truly effective at what you’re good at (wrestling) with the wrong leg way out front it’s just to engraved if you shoot you’ll stutter step your right leg forward and allow to much time for a sprawl.

The importance to that is my right to left twist is just as forceful as a lefty who kicks left. I stand beind my student and push them forward. They have a natural inclination to stick their dominant foot forward to catch themself. I find most time this is your dominant side and you will probably learn easier that side. Teaching the other side is usually a bit harder. I took my wrestling stance and converted myself to a right handed southpaw to jab better and wrestle more quickly.

    I box primarily southpaw. Doing wrestling in high school leading right. Done many reps shooting leading left wrestling and beginning to implement orthodox . My thought is keep same southpaw tactics and if they switch to southpaw switch to orthodox. That way they must be trained as a southpaw to know what I’m doing in both positions

    Your jab is meant to control the fight, confuse your opponent and create distance but not to create mass damage, so you don't need your lead hand to be strongest. After awhile your left jab will feel like your right. Then it time to master the left hook with that odd hand.

    Chanel is right about everything on this sh** I’m a idaho 150lbs state champ wrestler who started Muay Thai and boxing but I can’t fight orthodox it’s too awkward and I lose too much stamina faster than being opposed to orthodox. You can’t be both all the time you can switch but you can strike orthodox then switch to southpaw to wrestle you’ll have to fight southpaw all around.

    I'm a right handed southpaw. I've tried both stances over the years but it is clear my right jab is better than my left jab and my left straight is better than my right straight. Also, my left leg is noticeably more nimble/natural with kicks, even after a torn meniscus.

    To everyone who’s naming fighters that Chael seemingly forgot who are truly ambidextrous, I’m pretty sure he wasn’t referring to just being ambidextrous in striking. Of course there are numerous fighters who are proficient in both stances, and from a striking perspective the one that would be the most obvious name is Israel Adesanya. And Chael didn’t mention him. Kamaru Usman and Jones are both fighters who can strike with both stances but also wrestle with both lead legs. That’s what I personally believe he meant.

  • @vahag25
    @vahag252 жыл бұрын

    Southpaw, lead hand being stronger is an advantage, especially if they learn to turn the arm outward instead of twisting inward. Twisting inward requires more timing and is slower to retract and throw again. Twisting outward requires less timing and retracts automatically, and much quicker. Twist outward when jabbing and then bending the fist downward for added power is much better. You don’t need to twist either way for a hook. Jabs and straight punches are quicker and harder to block or dodge because the fist has less distance to travel. It’s seems difficult at first, but once the fighter gets used to the motion of twisting the arm outward, it’s actually easier because it’s the more anatomically correct way of punching. A fighter standing more sideways as opposed to a squared up stance is also a smaller target for his opponent. Southpaw with an outward twisting punch and slightly side stance is superior in my opinion. Also the fighter doesn’t need to drain his energy by keeping his gloves way up in front of his face to keep from getting hit as he tries to get closer to his opponent from a squared up orthodox stance. Twisting inward feels like natural instinct to modern humans with low levels of function due to today’s lifestyle of too much sitting and poor diet. If a person develops a high level of function, twisting outward would become is natural instinct. Most of todays “pro” boxers twist inward and don’t even know that another much better way of jabbing exists. Just a pretty dumb society to be honest. A good, anatomically correct punch practically times itself. Boxing is not a difficult science, it is basic physics and anatomy.

    Antiquated to you knuckle heads with a dominant hand. An equally talented anything that is ambidextrous will have an enormous advantage over their single dominant rival. MMA is too new to be near that point. It’s a matter of time that a talented enough ambidextrous athlete chooses the path of mma.

    I think you kind of proven his point. That there are fighters who are taught or learned in such a way that they prefer a specific foot/stance when practicing one martial art system from another. And anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, I think his main point of this long winded story, is that at some point, for you to be able to do mma and mix the two or more system of martial arts(style) that you've learn is to break away from the idea of preferring specific stance. On that note, I don't know which style of karate you learn but, here in our part of the world, karate teach students to be able to do with their left what their right can do and vise-versa.
