This is almost exactly the way I was raised to make tomato gravy. I let my roux get a little darker as that also imparts flavor. My adult son just called me asking how to make tomato gravy. I sent him your video for assistance since I do not know proportions, I just eyeball it. Thank you!

I just found this channel. I love how he teaches you the recipe. He's relaxed and he's just showing you how he does it. Some channels or either up tight home ec teachers or trying to hard to be stand up comics. This channel, Tasting History and Yesterday I really love. They try to teach without trying to annoy.

I've always made my tomato gravy with brown gravy mix instead of a traditional rue but we have also only ever served it with Salisbury steaks. I think I might make a batch tonight with homemade meatballs and mashed potatoes
Excellent teaching! Thank you.
Just made it for the first time. Using your video, it was perfect. Had the kids over and they loved it. Reminded them of Grandma’s and that made me smile. Thanks
Tomato gravy tastes delicious over cooked summer squash.

I'm Italian & a lot of Italian people call their tomato sauce, tomato gravy....I DON'T!! To me, sauce is SAUCE, and gravy is GRAVY!!
My husband always talks about tomatoes n rice.. Is this the same thing ?

No, but you can find my recipe for that here: southernbite.com/tomatoes-and-rice/
I have never heard of tomatoe gravy lol I'm from Ohio so they may be why. Lol
Americans love Italian food. They love the ubiquitous foods like pizza, pasta, and lasagna, and they even love the harder to find traditional Italian meat dishes like brassato and cotoletta alla milanese. “The subject isn’t even argued in South Philadelphia, where even some non-Italians refer to the magnificently smooth pureed tomato masterpiece as gravy,” People who call it “gravy” Although it’s the less popular term, some of America’s most prominent and famous chefs use gravy. recipe for Sunday Gravy that’s perfect for large portions of spaghetti. Although, it should be noted, she also has a recipe for the type of gravy that people put on the Thanksgiving turkey called No Fail Gravy. Americans generally lost the distinction between meat-based and non-meat-based over time, but certain regions held onto it - including when talking about Italian food. Here’s the kicker: There’s no similar word or dish for gravy in Italy. The traditional Italian-American dish with red gravy (or sauce) is based on Neapolitan ragu made with meat, tomato, and onion that’s commonly served with pasta. If you visit Naples, you won’t find the word “gravy” on any menus. Sauce is the more common term. The word makes sense, as it directly translates to "SALSA", which Italians use more often. “We don’t have a ‘gravy,’” Franca Riccardi, the director of language and culture programs at the America-Italy Society I thought she might be familiar with the term. Instead, she said"SALSA" is best for a tomato-based sauce. If you use meat or other condiments, you should say “sugo” or “ragu.”

So how many fresh tomatoes would you use? Why buy canned when the garden is full of tomatoes.
@Southernbite
2 жыл бұрын
5 to 6 fresh tomatoes should be about right.
I thought you weren’t ever to put tomato based anything in a cast iron skillet??
@Southernbite
2 жыл бұрын
If the skillet is seasoned properly, something that cooks quickly, like this gravy, should be fine. Though some say it's safe regardless, I still avoid cooking anything acidic in my favorite skillets for an extended period of time.
@Thesparten45
2 жыл бұрын
You don't want to cook acidic things for a long time in cast iron, this isn't sitting for hours so it's fine.
Didn't think you were supposed to put any tomatoes or tomato paste in cast iron.
@Southernbite
Жыл бұрын
You shouldn’t simmer for any long period of time, but cooking seething quickly won’t harm the finish.
Over baked chicken and rice.,
Tomato gravy ain’t southern, my guy. Not at all. White gravy and a bunch of sausage in it (preferably hot sausage)
