Once upon a time, when I was about 12 or 13, my grandma got ill and took to her bed. Their son and daughter lived with them to take care of them but Aunt had a job she needed to go to so she asked my Mom if I could cook and would I sit with grandma so I could also cook lunch for grandpa. I could cook so I gladly went. They ate a hearty lunch instead of a big supper. Aunt had told me to cook the pork chops and a couple of other things I wanted to do. One accompaniment I liked with pork chops was stewed breaded tomatoes, so I set about cooking those with celery, onions and bacon drippings in it. The tomatoes had so much juice they didn't want to cook down so I'd boiled them so long and had to get them done. Broke up the bread and put it in the stewed tomatoes but kept boiling the mix. To my horror, the bread fell all apart and made it look like a a pudding. Grandpa came home from his gardening and sat down. I set the food on the table but didn't mention the breaded tomatoes which weren't such a dish after they'd boiled the bread into bits. Uncle also came in from his Sat. work but made his own main dish of scrambled eggs. I sat down to eat too. Grandpa picked up the dish of tomato gruel and exclaimed..oh boy, tomato gravy..I can't tell you how long it's been since I had tomato gravy..! He was delighted. My mouth dropped open, I was startled, looked over at uncle and a big smile was playing on his lips. So he knew what was up, I'd told him what we were having for lunch...but with grandpa so delighted with tomato gravy, I just shut my mouth and didn't confess my mistake. Well, after the bread dissolved in the tomatoes, it Was tomato gravy. I left well enough alone.

Kendra Beasley When I was growing up in the 1950s, one of the mothers in our neighborhood fixed pasta shells in a simple tomato sauce for her young son. He called it "shellroni" and it was his favorite lunch. The mother would bring shellroni to the kids in the neighborhood whenever one of us got sick, so all of us grew to love it too. I still make it occasionally. I just sauté a can of diced tomatoes in a little butter long enough to develop a rich flavor, then add the sauce to the cooked pasta shells and season with salt & pepper. Simple, the way kids like it.

After quarantine, you should consider a “fan in my kitchen” type series where you invite one or two fans over to teach a requested kitchen skill or recipe and try what you make. Alex’ letter (and Susan saying “sorry you’re not here”) made me think of that idea.

There are a lot of really bad people in this world that are very smart and very deceptive… Definitely not a safe idea ((but)) Maybe she could rent a small building with a quality kitchen and do what you suggest .. I’m sure she could get paid good money through ad revenue streams. 🙂

Tomato gravy is one of my family’s favorite recipes! My grandma was from West Virginia and her and her sisters would make it all the time. We eat it for breakfast - on eggs, biscuits, toast, whatever! Ours is just butter, flour, and tomato juice (although the sisters disagreed on the best way to make it, haha) It brings back so many memories of cooking with my grandma.

I just use flour , milk , and a can of diced tomatoes . I always sift my flour so it won't be lumpy too . Miss Paula , I remember one year my family and I went to Myrtle beach . My kids were still little. I woke up and my mama cooked breakfast for all of us . The sliding glass door to our balcony was cracked. I woke up to hearing the ocean waves and the smell of my mama making us tomatoe gravy and biscuits , bacon , eggs , and coffee . OH....miss Paula...!! Years ago, I would've loved this tomato gravy dish. I was born and lived in Tennessee until I was 18, and my mother was a fabulous cook. We had dogs, but they didn't come in the house. And certainly not in the kitchen. She was the type of woman who made sure she was very clean before she went into the kitchen. She always wore her hair up with a covering to prevent a hair from falling into whatever she was making. She wore a clean apron each time. She never wore jewelry when she was cooking, nor did she ever touch her face, lick her fingers or wipe her nose on her hands, whether she was cooking or not. The top and inside of her stove never had a speck of any previous cooking spatters on it. She cleaned it all the time. I always knew whatever she made was absolutely clean. To this day, and now I'm almost 80, I cook the same way. My kitchen is neat and clean and organized. No one ever has to worry about picking up any germs because I don't put my hands on the food. If I get something on my hands, I stop and wash my hands.

@anne marie x Well Anne Marie, I guess in your kitchen you may need to wear house shoes (which I have) because perhaps hot stuff falls on the floor. I dont cook with my feet, so I cook barefoot in the summer. Shoes in the house, make it a barn - most people do not carry house shoes when they go visiting. So you just continue to follow ServSafe rules and Regulations in your house and I will follow ServSafe in my house, in bare feet. Cooking should be done while you are comfortable not with too warm of feet because you have your panties in a bunch about being barefoot. Sorry for the disagreeing attitudes, but that's what makes these United States Amazing. Have a wonderful Day, cook in your bare feet and see if your husband doesnt like it 😉

It's tomato sauce Italians call it Red Sauce and Gravy especially when there's different pieces of meat stewed in it ..Sauages meatballs chunks in one piece of pork..beef..spare rib and brosiole it's rolled pounded beef or pork rolled and tied stuffed with grated cheese parsley. It varies by region and family Its the only time you use tomato paste mixed with water than added She's making it totally wrong what's called TOMATO GRAVY It's southern Italian Calabrease ..Scilian. She's actually making a standard brow gravy using tomatoes.. So there's confusion BTW most labeled cans of American tomato puree is just Tomato paste and water It's garbage real Puree is called Passasta ( passed) it's literly. Pureed real tomatoes often picked in tall glass jars Multi is a great brand that has wide distribution in the states. She's a southern cook I suspect her Italian food attempts are nothing at all What's really Italian and with oregano Oregano isn't used as much as Greeks do Oregano turns whatever into Pizzola style..its not Italians favorite her Rosemary parsley and basil are I'm just passing by saw the video title and as a NY' we who grew up Italian I had to check Its a hotly debated subject is it gravy or red sauce. So. Now you know just in case you look into real Italian food. This sauce NO it's gravy It's served on Sunday.often with Ziti or Ravioli. In Italian homes communities. Ok that's it finito..

So glad you made this video. My Dad learned how to make Tomato gravy while in the Merchant Marines. My Mother made it when we were kids - but didn’t like it - so she would make white gravy first, then put her gravy in a little bowl - and added the canned tomatoes for the rest of us. Her biscuits & tomato gravy is what I always asked for when choosing my birthday meal. She used bacon drippings. We lost our mother @ the age of 91 last November. I guess - @ 65 yrs old - I will have to start making it myself! Guests, grandkids, relatives & friends were always skeptical, but after having Hazel’s Tomato gravy - they were sold. ❤️❤️. Definitely a comfort food if there ever was one.

This is a weekly staple in our home. I brown up a "little" bacon, sautee some onion, and then add my flour to make a rue. Then add my 'maters and milk until it thickens just the way we like it. This is the ONLY food my kids never picked through. They HATED tomatoes....except in 'mater gravy. I pair it up with some rice, sauteed green beans, fried pork chops, and yummy sweet cornbread with corn added. Some many sweet memories I had with my granny over her stove, and now with my grandkids over mine. Love you Paula!!!

Leeann Neal - Benadryl is the same concentration in Adult or Children’s. It’s the dosage that is important, meaning 25mg is still 25mg regardless if it’s Children’s or Adults. If someone weighs 50Kg, they could take 2 Capsules for a Total of 50mg, or 1mg per Kg (not per pound). The Conversion is 1Kg=2.2 Pounds. So 50Kg=110 lbs=50mg Total Benadryl Maximum, but 25mg is enough for most people. Paula Dean’s Lg Poodle is probably 50 lbs, but 25mg Benadryl should be the dose, not more. So 0.5mg per pound Max for a Dog, otherwise they will sleep all day!

I don't add thickening, but cook mine down to evaporate the excess liquid. I have also made it with canned tomatoes. Excellent over homemade biscuits, salmon patties, mashed potatoes and any vegetable. I put it over green beans or corn as well. Yummy 😋

The best part was holding those warm biscuits inside the pockets of my winter coat for my breakfast on the bus. Also I stand by the fact that 2 biscuits is always the appropriate portion. 😃

Miss Paula. I love this recipe! Because I live by myself, I use a toasted English muffin instead of a biscuit. Biscuits would be better, but I like them fresh. If I made a batch of biscuits most of them would go stale. That would be a crime against humanity! Anyway, I top the English muffin with 2 ham slices and a egg over easy smothered in Tomato Gravy. Makes a great meal anytime of the day. I can't wait to make this for friends and family in the future. Missed you so much when you weren't on TV. So glad to see you back. We had every other kind of gravy but Inever even saw tomato gravy. This sounds crazy but tomatoes are my favorite food. Not steak, pies, cake, chocolate or ice cream. My favorite meal is home grown tomatoes, thick sliced bacon very crispy, gravy and homemade buttermilk buscuits. If you want to throw in extra yummy add my granny's fresh dug hash brown potatos fried with bacon grease in a black skillet of course. I could just imagine how good it would look and taste. Iit looks so good but I will for sure make it with some good drippings. Thank you and our friend Alex for asking you too. I was so excited when I saw. I am 70 and a granny too. She has been gone so long but I remember my favorite meal like it was yesterday. Still my favorite today.
