SOUTHERN SOLDIER & DIXIE at GETTYSBURG 150th CAMP DANCE

Музыка

"This video was filmed July 6th, 2013, at the Saturday Night Ball during the commemorative reenactment celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, sponsored and hosted by the Gettysburg Anniversary Committee. More than 12,000 reenactors and over 25,000 spectators attended the events spread over four days. In the words of one of those attending: "The ball Saturday evening, hosted by the 2nd South Carolina String Band was the most high-energy and exciting ball I have yet attended. I arrived at the end, and was told to stay around afterwards for some "ruckus." The 2nd South Carolina broke out into, arguably, the most catchy song ever: "Southern Soldier." After every verse, the Rebel Yell screamed louder and louder, to a volume I have never heard even on a battlefield up to that point; it truly made the hair stand straight and the shine shiver. It was simply impossible to prevent oneself from joining in, whether Yankee or Rebel. And for the finale, the 2nd SC led the audience in "Dixie." I have never heard the song played and sung by so many people with so much energy. I've always loved both songs, but for the rest of my life, "Southern Soldier" and "Dixie" will continue to give me goosebumps as never before in remembrance of that dance. FrazierC 1st Sgt. 'The 150th Anniversary GAC Gettysburg Reenactment' www.civilwartalk.com This work was created by the 2nd South Carolina String Band in grateful appreciation to all of our friends and fans who have been so kind and supportive over more than 25 years, and as a tribute to all who fought for their cause 150 years ago."

"A Musical Time Machine" - the music of the 2nd South Carolina String Band. I'm a "late comer" to your music and videos, but a big fan. I can not, will not accept the story that the South was an evil empire. It - does - not - make - sense !! The music is an insight into the times, the era, the day of the Civil conflict. My gut tells me the people, the Southern people, are being greatly maligned by a bunch of modern-day "Carpet Baggers". May God bless those who fought and gave full measure to their beliefs.

Bless you and thanks for the kind words, Walter. "The music is an insight into the times, the era, the day of the Civil conflict." You have it exactly right. That is what we've tried to do with this music since we started, back in 1989. You're spot on with the rest of your comments too. It was what it was. It's idiotic to apply today's values and politics to those of the mid-19th century.

@Very Trying And Catholic Irish besides. I see that many Papists wanted to find God fresh and unrevealed in a new land as the Pilgrim Fathers did, away from the greed of the Roman church and their patrons in the aristocracy. Was it ever thus for all God's children? Seeking a new beginning in Israel but struggling as the Israelites did even under our Lord? This is the theme of a simple folk looking to return to God as was when the World was young. There remain the Jesuits, Dominicans, Franciscans and other Roman sects who kept the simple ways of our Lord Jesus during the tides of violence against those not tied to the church in Rome.

I think of a time when Part of the country stood up for something it believed in. Now don’t get me wrong, America is not without its fault, but the heart, the soul, the spirit, and the love for America stands within the south and for any black American today who looks at this and thinks racism you are the issue this is the pride of America, America may and it should, as time goes on we as people and a country should grow as well. Having been born and raised in Denmark, I have no direct connection to Southern culture, but this just about brought a tear to my eye. In these times of political tyranny, mass emigration and social alienation, it is beautiful to see people with a knowledge of who they are and a willingness to passionately defend it. I still hold out a small hope for a turnaround on our side of the pond, and will die before seeing my country fall to the silken-clad fist of globalism, but I am heartened by the knowledge that the South still know and defend their roots, in spite of those who seek to erase them.

Bonnie Blue Flag was based off "the irish jaunting car" from County Kerry. Although today the "Irish Brigade" is thought of as being Northerners, there were several Irish regiments in the South, such as the 10th Tennessee. Many Irish were sent to America by the 'traitors' you spoke of, the IRB, to learn how to fight. The intent was for them to secretly return to Ireland after the war and lead another uprising like that of 1798, but the returning part did not work out, and many of the Republican brothers died in the fighting.

NEWS FLASH.... The south lost, the Union won, all men and women are free. Time leap into the 21st century. Only Taliban behavior exhibited here is by all those seen cheering and singing of killing a Union soldier, and wishing that they lived in a land of oppression where old times of degradation and subligation are not forgotten. This is NOT about "southern pride" or heritage. What does that mean anyway? Pride in the fact that the south was completely and utterly defeated? Pride in the fact that the idea of owning another human being as property is so repugnant all civilized nations on the planet stand firmly united against it? The optics of this video with people dress in costumes of 155 years ago, and your comment show a complete disconnect with the reality of not only today but with history. It demonstrates the exact totality of ignorance and intolerance you claim to resent. Remember, "as He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free." I hope these words will provide you with the appetite to reflect... to look into your mirror and into your eyes... and discover those things you value are not valuable at all... but are huge obstacles of hate that serve no human being for the greater good of mankind. The future of our nation depends on understanding our history, embracing the greatness, learning from and correcting our tragic mistakes, to boldly continue this great American experiment. I'll end this with the words of President Ronald Reagan, "You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth..." I pray his words will resonate with you... and others.

Germans who were the only decent soldiers in the Yankee Army, and forced conscripts like poor Irish immigrants who broke out into riots against Lincoln's war in New York City forcing the regime to divert Federal troops in 1863 to crush "his own people". Rich New England "WASP" elites descended of the Puritan menace forced the war but they weren't going to get their hands dirty fighting it, sanctimony and hypocrisy is their hallmark, Charles Sumner, Thad Stevens, etc....the Puritan perpetual troublemakers saw themselves as a new Christ e.g. in lyrics **"As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free"** "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (slightly softened from original song "John Brown's Body" which openly celebrated as messianic a bloody terrorist who wanted to incite bloody Haiti-style slave revolt).

Of course Yankee Puritan abolitionist/feminist who wrote" Battle Hymn", Lady Julia Ward Howe, would never even come close to risk dying for anyone in her beloved 'battle'...

I keep coming back to this video, time and time again probably because of the way it makes me feel. Everyone's having such a great time, I can't help but smile! I feel as though this is what a lot of people are missing in life - camaraderie, community, a shared identity. They say of tradition, that it is not worship of ashes, but preservation of fire. I believe that's perfectly captured here With these people and this music, you keep that fire burning. Moments like these are treasures, and the folk who try to beat you down can never take them from you. In all, I don't think I've seen near as much spirit as in the American South. @@michael3556 I love this music & I disagree with the way the South was treated & I accept I do live on the other side of the planet & I mean no disrespect. But if you feel the need to keep your rifle buy your side it is a sad day for freedom.

Tyranny is the most ironic thing I’ve ever heard considering the topic is the south. The people who betrayed the nation, betrayed the people, and spit on freedom which is America’s motto.

This is legendary music from the civil war! its a shame that people are tearing down confederate soldier statues and memorials, it is disrespectful because the confederate soldiers were Americans as well. they also gave their lives as well.

Well, God bless you for your patriotism (we need all we can get these days !!!) and your service to God and the U.S. Thanks so much for your kind words. I can tell you sincerely, after 30 years playing this music, to hear such words of support from you and others all over the globe is 'music to our ears'! We are truly humbled and grateful. We may be aging-out, but the music is 'ever-green' as a friend once told us, and thanks to the internet it will go on long after we're gone. Who knew? God works in mysterious ways...
