17:33 - I think the point of this scene isn't talking about society. I think the creators are actually referring to themselves, the show South Park and how it could have played apart in lowering the bar with all the wild and crazy stuff they've put in their episodes over the years. In a similar way to how a lot of people believed Beavis and Butthead was responsible for dumbing down a generation

  • @j.vonhogen9650

@@j.vonhogen9650 Oh I absolutely agree with you. I'm just saying that I believe that's sort of the hidden joke in Stan and Kyle's conversation. Is that they somehow wonder if they, in a fourth wall break moment, perhaps pushed the envelope too many times. Said too many offensive things and told too many fart jokes and now they're looking around and watching everybody around them scream and laugh and tell fart jokes, and now they're "sitting in the stink of it". In reality, I don't believe South Park is to blame for anything. I just think this was a moment of blunt self reflection on Trey and Matt's part where they are like "Shoot... Did we do this?"

@17:26 I strongly suspect that Kyle’s monologue here isn’t _just_ about society as a whole. It was the _South Park_ creators Matt & Trey wondering if maybe _South Park_ itself, with its crass humor and portraying so much about all the lows of society, had helped lower the bar in society. When Kyle says “Maybe it was _us._ … Maybe somehow, _we_ lowered the bar,” he’s not referring solely to society in general. He’s doing a bit of breaking the 4ᵗʰ wall there. Kyle isn’t just voiced by Matt Stone, he’s loosely _based on_ Matt Stone. I think maybe Matt Stone was talking as _himself_ there, not as Kyle Broflovski. It wouldn’t be the only time the _South Park_ creators had realized that they’d messed up and did some damage to society and tried to at least acknowledge if not help fix it. They’d previously done episodes such as “Rainforest, Schmainforest” and of course the whole bit with Al Gore and ManBearPig representing global warming which they portrayed as just an imaginary thing (even going so far as to have ManBearPig play a small but significant role in the climax of the _ImaginationLand_ trilogy), but then they did the “… Got Cereal?” two-parter with ManBearPig (and thus global warming) being revealed as real after all, a dire threat that could only be temporarily placated at best. And then the bit I referenced in another comment about maybe _not_ having the only black character in the school (until the arrival many seasons later of a black girl) be literally named “Token Black,” and did that whole retcon with his name supposedly always having been “TolKeIn Black.” But _this_ episode refutes that with the pre-title credits screen (@11:55) of his _Fatty Doo-Doo_ “documentary” about Cartman

You're trying to hit a level of nuance you're just not going to find around here. Seriously... I saw one comment recommending the Crack Baby Athletics episode and their takeaway was "Cartman is a genios (sic) businessman." ...not the obvious commentary on the NCAA or the coercive and unethical nature of the entire premise. Which is probably why they spelled genius incorrectly. A big issue with our entire health as a country is multifaceted... Everything from capitalism to lack of access to reliable healthcare. Not to mention the ability to afford healthy foods over preserved corn junk because it's affordable. There's even to be something said about our relationship with the media we consume. We wouldn't be getting Honey Boo Boo or whatever her mom's new show is if people weren't watching. That, and how popularized body standards can socially affect a population. Stan even says, "maybe we lowered the bar..." I hope finding the answers to how your body works was able to give you some piece of mind. Even if you didn't necessarily need it. People's bodies are different.

You know, this episode frames it as this big thing because it is fat people on scooters, but why don't businesses use wider doors? My wife is in a wheelchair as she is an amputee, and this IS a real issue.
