Sound Therapy for Anxiety and Stress: Jonathan Adams and Montana Skies at TEDxTelfairStreet

Музыка

Seeing music as more than just a way to entertain and move our emotions, Jonathan recounts his own struggles with stress and anxiety, and explores the potential of sound as a healing force.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. If you got real Anxiety Issues read on. The problem of anxiety is a habit of expectations. You are anxious because you are expecting something to happen. Habit of expectations is the real root of anxiety. The cure however is very straightforward. Practice to have no expectations. For example when there is any event like job interview, going to an unknown place or whichever that gives you good amount of anxiety, this event will happen even if you are not present over there. And within those events you have only one thing to do, go there without having any extra imagination. If you are not prepared for something then prepare for it by learning or understanding about what you lack instead of having anxiety. Perform at your best. You don't have to do anything more than that. Don't expect something to happen, just go and see for yourself how right or wrong you are about it. Experience it. Control expecting certain things from happening which won't happen. Practice and keep practicing to have lower expectations. Remember you don't expect if the water is poisoned or not before drinking everytime, you just go with it, even in front of many people. If you were that one specific person who always expect water to be poisoned that of course you know you'll always be nervous to drink any water. So just go and minimise ramping up the anxious feeling by expecting unnecessary and just live out your life much more positively. ♥️☺️➕ It also cure phobia and any other fear. Also helps reduce depression. One straightforward solution, Go with no expectations and act through pure feedback and accordingly. 🙏🏼

The way you say this just made me realize something about music and anxiety... just some theorizing, but i spent a lot of time recently engaging with this: you say a main factor in anxiety is expectation (which from a psychological standpoitn is definitely valid). Now the interesting thing is that when you study music, you soon learn music works mainly by playing with your expectations, you go from a minor to a diminished to a minor and then finally end up at the major chord, and that melody sounds nice because you expected that sound to come, because thats how our brain decyphers music. This might be a fundamental idea in why music therapy works the way it does... does this make sense? I would love some feedback on this!

@@braincakez6603 Music causes distraction which is equal to having not think about the problem at hand or makes you express what you think to get some sort of confirmation of relief. So in such case it causes you to think differently without expecting while listening to music. You are just in that Zone. Once the music gets over, you are back to your old habits of having expectation. I also realized that our core intelligence was built on the base of expecting things to happen in certain way if certain action was taken, but with humans, imagination makes it a habit to think in a pattern that causes anxiety.

@cloudxukun I know that what I said won't work out of the box. I know how panic attack feels. Been there. Even if we aren't expecting anything we end up having those. The problem I found during my recovery was that our body failed to trigger a mechanism that suppresses panic attacks. Practicing no expectations and questioning our negative emotions like anger, fear or panic slowly built a learning pattern for my body to understand and suppress such feelings. But sometimes I do feel it anyway but I recover as fast as it came within minutes. This is just a practical point of view. You get rid of fear by facing fear. Meaning you expose the mind to the unknown to learn that it's okay and everything is under control. When not expecting try to see the world "as is". For example, if someone said that room is haunted then the memory of it will be a trigger to subconsciously expect it to be even if it isn't or you consciously suppress or discard the info. You will expect it even when you think you aren't. On the other hand, if you weren't given such knowledge of what the room is like, then you are going in the room without any fear or expectations, there aren't any feelings instead your mind will be more focused towards other tasks that awaits inside that room. It's just like being in that zone when you don't think much about the subject and exist around it.

@@jessica_kate_ I totally agree with you. I know all these which my mind cooks is wrong and for a moment I don't even pay attention to it or atleast try that these thoughts didn't bother me. But then it starts increasing. I have been suffering from OCD and there's no one to talk about it. It's so bad. It just takes out all your potential to do any work. It's very depressing. I really hope I'll come out of this one day.

I put my sound meter on and measured the Hz and found it to be mostly 432 Hz. This explains the healing natural effect the sound has as it is in harmony and helps the body to balance. There are many videos with healing frequencies and classical music transposed properly to 432. Put on a set of good headphones, turn off the lights, light candles, essential oils, and let the mind and body rest and balance themselves. Also if you have music piped in at work or listen a lot wearing ear buds - it's in 440 Hz which is a dis-harmonic frequency. This is causing damage to your nervous system and altering you mental balance. This man has found the secret.

That is why I question my thinking….Is this absolutely true?… Or is this negative imagination? Almost all the time it’s imagination. Then it’s conquerable to see it and know it’s not the truth of my Being. “Not I”! Self observation and non~identifying offers the possibility to self remember. It’s called “The Work” to be able to pull ourself out of habitual mechanical negativity we’ve acquired from family, friends, culture. It’s waking up to our false programs for happiness! Music is a wonderful means to help shift back to our authentic state beyond all the chatter. Phew!

The Sound of Acoustic Guitar, when it first came in was excellent. The basic effect it had was to Induce relaxation. Played along with the chillo would take most people to a " Relaxed state of mind." The sounds of the Tibetan bowls, From when he struck the 1st one. That sound alone was enough to summon my attention. I do think there is much to be gained from sound therapy. If we would just "Stop and Listen." Much Appreciation goes out to Jonathan Adams For putting this all together. And bringing it to the Ted show For all of us to enjoy.

Fascinating topic...sound therapy which of course, like all music, art and dance therapies, work! The arts are very healing....to do them and to experience them in all their various forms! As a professional artist, musician and composer, I do feel, however that her cello playing is a bit too aggressive and almost drowns out his lilting guitar playing! Have recently discovered the healing power of Tibetan singing bowls and am taking up the tin whistle after playing piano for 61 years. Much easier to play a great portable musical instrument like the tin whistle and other smaller instruments than the piano. Even a keyboard isn't as light and portable. Also studying the Bodhran drum as well since I'm partly of Irish/Scottish and English ancestry on my maternal side..love all Celtic music...beautiful, indeed! Thanks for sharing~

Have you experienced Binaural beats? It is a low Hz oscillating sound that is slightly out of faze between the left & right channels. Listening via headphones there is a phantom sound that is created (Binaural beat) as the sound waves collide in the brain, like a mental harmonic. Very interesting research has been done using this to produce Beta Alfa, Theta, and Delta waves in the brain to treat insomnia, anxiety, and depression.

it should be noted, that a piece music as a "sound healing" element may work for anxiety for some people, but the same composition may have the opposite affect on another person as music is a subjective experience. even if the frequencies needed are there. this sound/music is a perfect example. there are plenty of people who will think its soothing and just as many who will be anxious trying to sit through it. Traditionally (as well as in contemporary therapies) sound being used to heal is not a song but a pitch that is held at a frequency for a period of time, which allows the vibration of the wave to resonate through the body, not a random chirping of bugs, and some standing bells with friction resonance, or a cello and guitar song,(although both were nice compositions, and may relieve the stress or anxiety for the performer and possible a group of others that certainly can not be a definitive statement)

Does sounds therapy work over videos the same way as in person? I watch a lot of sound meditation and high frequency videos on KZread and I wonder if it has the same effect through my phone then in person? If anybody knows thankyou x

Better off without the slapping sound, was the timing off? As a musician that can be distracting

Ha ha. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. It's actually stressful. She's very good, but she has to tame her "I" - ego. She has yet to transform like him. She's a musician, and she has yet to become a "stream enterer." Once she reaches this stage, she will perform like him, absolutely humble and selfless.

I have also found cello to be too loud and too much and as a result not relaxing at all. Minus cello, it would have been a nice relaxing piece

Plenty in KZread base on Frequencies

  • @richardgates7479
    @richardgates74797 жыл бұрын

We can't hear anything below 20hz, and even if someone can, KZread audio and any other digital source won't reproduce the frequencies you're talking about. So any effect music has on us has nothing to do with brainwave interaction with sound.

Maybe impulses beating at breainwave frequencies do however? It's like putting the metronome to 8 Hz. You can hear it, even though it's not a tone, but a repeating impulse.

And maybe I can levitate if I concentrate real hard? The effect that infrasonic sounds have is not good, it is known to have a bad effect. All that one has to do is to put someone under a fMRI and play infrasonic sounds, though that doesn't measure "brainwaves" does it. Maybe you can believe that your computer can reproduce these sounds and affect your brain. All it takes for faith is self deception and ignorance.

Sound frequency is picked up directly through the body’s electromagnetic field. The heart produces the largest field and certain frequencies will affect it one way or another. 110hz or thereabouts will alter brainwaves as the heart field is the larger but actually informs the brain’s EMF. Think of the entire body as being responsive to frequency resonance. Our world is too full of stuff to produce incoherence in the body’s EMF hence anxiety. The natural flow of fundamental, i.e electrical energy in the body becomes impeded and illness follows. Thus of course was known to yogis and Chinese for thousands of years.
