How does music as sound and vibration impact your body and brain? Dr. Lee Bartel explores how sound can stimulate cells in your body and brain to reduce the impact of Fibromyalgia pain, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Depression, and even increase blood flow. It shows how a common consumer vibroacoustic device is used to treat these health conditions. Lee Bartel is Professor Emeritus of Music and Health and Music Education and at the University of Toronto and Member of the Board and Chair of the Research and Education Committee for the Artists’ Health Alliance. He served as Faculty of Music Associate Dean of Research, and was the Founding Director of the Music and Health Research Collaboratory (MaHRC) at University of Toronto from 2011 - 2015.
He is a Member of the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience, Cross-appointed to Institute for Life Course and Aging, as well as the Graduate Department of Rehabilitation Science. He taught graduate courses on Music and Brain as well as Social Psychology of Music. With extensive early experience as a music teacher at all levels and as a performing choral conductor, singer, violinist, and guitarist, he has special interest in conditions of learning, pedagogic culture, social psychology, and music in human development. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I was on my deathbed in the hospital 4 years ago. I listened to healing vibration sounds on KZread with my headphones..I walked out of that hospital after 6 months!!! I have chronic pacenratiits and other problems. The doctors say I should not be alive and walking around with only half a pancreas...I listen almost every night to healing vibration sounds on KZread..I am sure these sounds have helped heal me and keep me going!!! Thank you Mr. Tesla for your hard work in this area and for bringing it to the world's attention!

As a 12 yr old kid in rural northern Michigan, I spent a lot of my time outside in the woods, in the pines. I'd get up early on a weekend day, get dressed and go out to the woods, I was compelled I had a craving for it because it just felt so good to be out there and I had to do it. It was a deep pure feeling of maybe awe, way more than just observing peaceful nature, I was entranced by the beauty. I remember clearly, walking into the trees after a heavy snow, finding a good spot and just sitting, leaning against a tree, soaking up what I can only describe as magnificence. I'd literally feel a strong vibration flowing all around and through me, and everything felt perfect. I thought it's so perfect I can feel it, this is what perfect feels like. I've since concluded that the trees were somehow talking to me. Been a long time but those times stand out in my life, I've not felt that feeling from anything else.

Well, I'm a music nut and I have been a musician most of my life. I've known all along that music has an effect on people. We could see it every night on the dance floor by what songs people responded to. Harmony is pleasing to the human ear but dissonance is not. I'm convinced that the Beatles were the best musical group in history and I think it was based on the harmony of Lennon and McCartney. People loved hearing that harmony. When I played in an orchestra and when I sang in a large choir there were moments when everybody in the room felt something. We had perfectly harmonized on a single note and held it and it sent a chill down your spine. I just can't say enough about the benefits of music. I can remember every song I've ever heard. Definitely, music can heal and I think every town in America should play music in the town square at least every weekend.

Wonderful for cardiac and bloodflow treatments too! Wow! I hope you will publish and share more double blind studies in the future. How amazing it took me 5 years to find this. Thank you Dr Lee Bartel. So many people need to know about energy healing through frequency and music. Idea of sound of crickets being music medicine ... hmm.... The Japanese used to have crickets as pets in little fancy cages. Maybe they were knowingly practicing music medicine at the cellular level centuries ago and forgot why they caged pet crickets.

My low back goes L - 4,5 to S - 1 related to yours and causes bilateral sciatica. My low back responded to pain meds before the accident and is now so much worse the pain meds are no longer enough and then there are the headaches. I am worn out and depressed from the pain. I was very active before the accident and now it's not possible to enjoy hiking, biking etc. Impossible to keep up with housework, and would just enjoy a day without pain running my life. The doctors are ridiculously way over protective with the pain meds. I hate being reliant on these meds but it's a matter of functioning. Start at your base chakra it is red , learn where they are all located and the corresponding colour. As you listen to each 4 minute video in your minds eye visualize that chakra filling with the corresponding colour and then allow your body to fill with its colour ...go through the steps of each coloured bowl. Also you can add herbs rhodiola and ashwagandha are both amazing for stress and anxiety , find them in tincture form you just need a little when you feel out of sorts and it will make you calm and give energy at the same time. 😘 If you do it while having a bath the water amplifies it. I was cured of chronic pain I had for many years in 3 days...by accident! I bought a Glazyrin Alpha jaw harp because I thought they sounded neat and got this very psychedelic "electric" feeling, like my nerves had just woke up in my body. It's difficult to describe but I felt very high for 3 days but also noticed my pain was gone. 3 weeks later I'm still feeling surprisingly well! I'm playing my haw harp for about 20 minutes, 3 times a day. I'm not religious, I really don't believe in magical happenings but something very strange happened and I feel so much better now. I was in so much pain this year, I almost gave up my favorite sport. Just on the internet trying to figure out what may have happended to me. It's really odd happening but it may help others. Jaw harps vary greatly but I found my Glazyrin alpha on Amazon, just wished I'd tried this sooner.

@Sarah Baron the great thing is, musicians are taking music directly to the people (so it doesn't matter about the schools doing or not doing it, in the long run). In Oz we have pub choirs, in Brisbane one such choir did a version of Running up That Hill recently (with Kate B's permission) Kate loved it. check it out. Biofeedback has been done for years in different cultures in meditation. It really works when the background sounds are pleasant to the person meditating. But did you know that some sounds can be pleasant for one person but erie for someone else? That's because we relate some sounds to past experiences with sounds that sound the same.

In my novel, Soothing The Savage Beat, by E. Augustine, I describe a future dystopian world where 'sensible' music has long been forgotten. But one man tries to revive the likes of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and many others, believing that such music can restore sanity to a world gone mad. But he also knows what comes around goes around again. The hard part is to convince others to listen. In this future, broken world, the government controls and provides the basic needs to a populace that was forced into dependency. But even the government knows entertainment is essential. Along with music, it provides jobs, food, clothing, housing, and drugs. Cities are walled, people are content, and life is intentionally short. And the only surviving music is ear-punishing, senseless, and mind-killing. But how the world came to this condition was no surprise. How we got there was easy to see. And the way the world is today should tell us what to expect. Music has power. The ancient Greeks believed it. Most cultures do too. We must use this power before nothing makes sense. And we are going there fast. Music is therapy, and we desperately need both.

I’m really curious to know what the basis of each of the “prescriptions” was? What determined the different X values? “40hz for X mins, X days a week, for X weeks” And, if the prescriptions had the positive results at these values- would increasing the “doses” have increased the positive results more? For example, what would the difference in results be of someone treated w/ 40hz for 30 mins a day for 2 days a week was instead treated w/ 40 hz for 60 mins a day for 7 days a week? Is there a harmful effect from receiving “too high/too much dosage of 40hz treatment” or perhaps just diminishing returns after “X Mins per treatment and Days per week” that make “increasing dosage” just kind of pointless? I’D LOVE TO KNOW THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS! So fascinating!

I may be able to explain this ,not comprehensively but on the surface I'm getting ready to have an AO scan and I've been researching it and they're corrective therapy are frequencies on headphones that also press on the bone next to your temple so that the vibration goes through your body. they do it lightly in increments because if you force it too fast the body will reject it I suppose because of symbiosis or stasis. So I guess "easy does it" is the best therapy This is hard for me cuz I'm an extremist I want to take my two great big tower speakers and put on each side of me and put every frequency in me that I can!!!

I have seen a story on other related research using the gamma (brain-wave) frequency (30-100Hz) for neurons to reduce amyloid deposits related to hearing loss and dementia. In this story both sound and light flicker was being studied. Further, the metabolic productions of cellular proteins known to protect neuronal cell health was measured to be different, in effect tuned, to produce different molecular sizes. If I had access to the original story I could be more specific but the name of this class of proteins escapes my memory. Clearly something is going on and this is a fertile area for further research. The importance of the change in protein production is that it identifies a credible mechanism to explain the effects observed. People are already buying and using devices for audio and optic stimulation of neurons well before this has been explored for possible negative effects as well as positive. Much more remains to be studied to improve results and improve safety and far too little is known yet for this to become standardized treatment. Hopefully progress is coming.

Thankyou, it never fails to surprise me, that more music isn’t used for healing people. Humans are a field of vibration energy, so it would appear that a human body, in disharmony, becomes ill. Sound at certain levels, we know can be soothing, relaxing the body. Where as heavy machinery, constant white sound, sadly isn’t soothing. Mankind has many wonderful material goods, within the modern day environments. Sadly mankind also, has become detached from nature. Walking on the earth, enjoying fresh air, listening to wild animals, bird song and seeing green vegetation, all are beneficial. A question, that many people ask, being why do we separate ourselves from nature and live in artificial concrete jungles. No greenery, in many of these environments, often high pollution of air and detrimental white sound. Hopefully mankind will evaluate present day detrimental environments. Then realising all the fantastic benefits that sound used skilfully can heal people. That medical chemical approaches, aren’t always the ideal answer, as many of them have unwelcome side effects, because people’s immune systems, sometimes actually works against the various, pills and injections. Agree there are many patterns and we are just beginning to see many patterns unfold. Lovely work you are doing. (I worked in hospital as a nurse for many years, so have observed many illnesses over the years.) whenever l’m below par , l do gentle relaxing yoga, both physical postures and chanting sounds. I’m blessed as it always works for my body. (Appreciate many illnesses need different approaches, so many medical staff, work tirelessly to help their patients.) However life is change. Perhaps it’s time to restructure our healing approaches to today’s patients. Best wishes to you and all your viewers.☺️

MY MOM , A FAMOUS ACADEMIC AT A VERY LARGE MENTAL INSTITUTION CURED LONG TERM SCHIZOPHRENICS WITH MUSIC. SOME WENT HOME AFTER DECADES IN THE INSIDE. I HELD A SPEAKER, NOT EVEN A TRANSDUCER WITH CORRESPONDING RIFE FREQUENCY FOR MY DOG AND ALL THE SPREADING TUMOR CELLS WERE KILLED AND TGE TUMOR REDUCED SIGNIFICANTLY BEFORE HER OPERATION. 4 1/2 MINS BEFORE BED EVERY NIGHT FOR 4 WEEKS.

As for myself, one of my tinnitus disappear the night I used an earthing bedsheet and never came back (I had tinnitus since 30 years, and I use earthing sheet since more than 10 years). The tinnitus from the other side is still there from time to time if I am exhausted - which I certainly try to avoid.

I have Vagus Nerve damage from childhood with Fibromyalgia starting at about age 35. Vagus nerve disorder covers a wide and deep, comprehensive parts of the bodily systems that get pinched nerve manifestations. This causes organ/heart and other malfunctions. I'm 70, quad bypass 9 months ago, emergent. I do Hz/Vibration combos on KZread for several focused healing needs. Dad knew RR Rife and had his small, mobile hz/vibration box so I grew up with this though lost it in my 30s. I am glad to have found your talk on this, restores my faith and resolve to continue healing!! Many Blessings!!

It is my dream to somehow get people to pluck all those old boomboxes out of their attics and donate to childrens hospitals, and those in hopeless situations. So many people, including myself have several of these things laying around collecting dust. The kids dont even know about music, it could be so healing in so many ways. I just dont know how I could begin to get an organization together for this, but again, a dream.

Hello. I have significant experience with EDS. I am just a stranger on the internet but I would like to encourage you with your chronic EDS pain, and suggest that you look into an elimination diet that is meat-based or completely carnivore. I have seen, anecdotally, many people drastically reduce their EDS and other chronic illness symptoms by doing so. I would suggest looking into Dr. Shawn Baker and Anthony Chaffee here on KZread. Best regards

@@botsbass842 As an ethical vegan a meat based diet is not an option. And I see from family members who eat meat that I suffer much less with EDS than my sisters. As sn example one sister has been up A and E twice just in the last couple of months due to a dislocated shoulder and she is younger than me. I deall with aches and pains as I lead an active life with work and 5 dogs but luckily I don't suffer the dislocations or end up bed ridden like my other sister.

This is phenomenal information. I know how music makes me feel while I listen to it. But to have such a huge impact on Alzheimer's, Fibromyalgia, and heart problems is miraculous indeed. When I think about it...homeopathy is all about intention by the person who's making it. The more diluted homeopathy is, the more powerful it is. It then becomes pure energy. Thank you
