You have to do the Brian May BY busting the bank. The high end BM replica red special, the BM signature AC30 (at least 2 of them!), his treble booster, stereo delay and you have to shoot it somewhere you can crank the amp to full and blast away (various youtube vids and websites will show you the right pickup settings for each song by the way!). EVERYONE would watch it.

I've found conflicting information, both from primary sources (Brian May himself and his guitar tech), BM in one interview shows a sixpence, but his guitar tech in another interview shows a shilling. BM also states that a dime or quarter would work as well. The two coins are almost identical (both made from cupronickel alloy and about the same thickness), the only difference is the diameter - a sixpence is 3/4", a shilling 1".

    7 жыл бұрын

The sad reality is that I really could not tell if it was a joke or not. People don't realize that too much gain and cutting mids is actually a terrible practice when you play live. See, there are a ton of metal "bros" who go out and buy a MetalZone, a 6505, and an EQ, and try to gig with the amp's mids all the way down, and the EQ's mids all the way down, with the amp gain way up and the MetalZone on, but you can't hear them at all in a mix (I've done sound work every once in a while), and they have to turn up louder starting a volume war. You try to tell them to crank those mids back up and kill the MetalZone, and then they bitch about their tone, their decisions.

@@user-lx3dn9bt9e oof i agree i think when they heard go full blast they thought that meant everything, part of brians tone comes from him messing with the volume on the guitar, they also went the wrong direction and made the treble booster useless but turning the bass and mid up as well. His tone also focuses on sustain and clarity which is difficult to achieve. The only thing they got right was the guitar and amp, the rest sounded like those memes of people playing other genres as metal. Theres videos out there by the man himself talking about how he does it and its well documented about what he uses too. The only thing i got out of this video was that the repro red specials are actually in my price range and i now might make a bad decision.

I think it's about time for a by busting the bank on Brian May. It would be cool to see a 3 AC30 setup like Brian uses. There are a lot of people that try to get the sound right but it's a bit off without 3 amps and the delay.

Brian's rig is pretty simple: Red Special, treble booster, tuner, wah, chorus, stereo delay and wet/dry/wet setup using 3 AC30's with everything cranked. The main ingredient of the rig is his guitar and how it's wired. That's how you get 98% of the tones. In most cases you can do all the sounds just with a guitar wired like a red special, treble booster and an amp with similar sound to the AC30. Also, never forget the sixpence that he uses as a pick.

I own at least the Vox VX50 GTV amp, it has the AC30 Top Boost channel, model, etc., and I'm so glad it does. Plus it has tons and tons of sheer power. I've played some Queen and some Rory Gallagher on it, and you can definitely get close to those tones on that amp, especially using the FX or some good pedals. I don't have the Brian May guitar, however. I wish I did!

Gentlemen: As always, entertaining and great playing! This one was bound to be tricky - few guitarists have achieved such a singularly unique sound [and variety of sounds] as Brian May - that's just one reason he's a legend. And just as with your attempt at Alex Lifeson, you do kinda get in the ballpark though honestly, not a home run. Yet that is really more a limitation resulting from the budget I think, combined with how sonically complex both Alex' and Brian's tones actually are. BUT!!! You totally missed the mark on one point - Brian May famously plays guitar with a coin. And English shilling I believe. That would have cost you guys nothing :D CORRECTION! Just re-watched Premier Guitar's 2014 Rig Rundown for Brian. Apparently he uses an English sixpence for his picks and he feels the ones from 1947 are the best. Gotta love that guy! Again, a yeoman's effort! :D

As a recent owner of the red special from BMG I can only say. It's a unique guitar. Plays like a dream although the original has a much thicker neck and very low frets which actually makes it very hard to play. So I think they made a tremendous effort to mix this. The sound is very much in the guitar. I'm running it through a Marshall preamp and valvestate poweramp and a Marshall speaker emulator/powersoack. All need to be checked because I picked up playing again after 25 years. So I don't even think it's at its best at the moment. As effects I use a quadraverb GT and the sound difference between my other guitars and the red special is shocking. The vox will do the sound more justice probably but even on the marshalls you can hear that the guitar is the main "voice" and ofcourse Brian himself. He is and always be unique. If you look at his playing style and hand use (and coin) you can see that it's all the feel and attack of his fingers. Emulating someone like Brian is especially hard because he doesn't use his sound as an effect but he is the sound combined with an unique guitar. Some sounds can be achieved easily because the player for example uses a fixed setting for distortion or overdrive or clean and uses that. With Brian it's the way he hits the strings or uses his fingers combined with the volume control on the guitar and the coin. Of course every player does this to some extent but he is just a master in making his guitar litterally speak/sing. For fans make sure to also check the book about the red special.
