Sorry, Paint & Farkles Isn't Why Folks Buy CVOs

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I finally got to look at a CVO and while I liked the way it looks, it felt like it was missing something...

It is a very odd choice to turn an ADV into a CVO, as you would not want to take off road to any degree, particularly has they have also painted the crash bars a non standard color. It also lacks the usual features of a CVO (Stronger engine, better sound system, etc). But at least they did not try to price it out of sight like your typical CVO, the farkles do make up the difference in price pretty much. Still I could not see using this as anything more than a highway queen, but then that is what 90% of folks do with ADV bikes anyways.

Yep, it's by far the most "reasonable" CVO H-D makes. As far as "highway queens" I had a guy ask me if my PAS had ever seen anything other than pavement at a group ride. I showed him my channel and he watched a vid where I'm going up my gravel road and smiled. He said "Most ADV owners don't do that". I replied "Well it's where I live and I've had no choice to but to do it on every bike I've owned (2 Sporties, an Aprilia Shiver, a ZX6-R, a Dyna, and a Road King)". I'd likely swap out the crash bars and bags for regular PA equipment to keep them nice but keeping the paint mint would be hard. I'd cringe every time I went up my gravel road but unlike every other bike I've owned besides my PAS, the PA CVO is made for that very situation. Thank you for watching and the comment!

I think if you spec out all the parts they put into the bike, you will get close to the MSRP. Maybe they should have dropped in the high flow airfilter and exhaust? I think this was more of an way to enter the higher price range. Using the CVO may have been the incorrect identifier. Maybe try Ralley Pro like Triumph. Something like that anyway.

Nice, The Pan America Deluxe Edition (DE), Sport Tour (ST), Vaquero, Palomino, something. *Bon Jovi Blaze Of Glory instrumental plays* *Man sits by dusty campsite, sun low in the sky* Sam Elliot narrates- Ever wanted to ride off into the sunset? Go anywhere? No road off limits? Only the necessities? *Man stands up, looks at sunset, looks longingly at PAP, camera pans over PAP. Man dumps coffee cup on small fire which goes out, fast montage of coat, helmet, gloves being put on. See man smile before helmet visor is lowered. TFT display start up shot while you hear the PAP come to life. Suddenly, dust is in the air, man is chasing the sunset. Drone does overhead flyovers. Man stops at the top off a hill, looks back at the camera one last time then throttles up and disappears, in a cloud of dust, over the hill.* *"Call me young guuuuuun!" repeats* Sam Elliot narrates- What are you waiting for? Take your shot at the horizon. *Stylized "Pan America Palomino" flashes onto the screen* Such blatant cheese, such nostalgia, even I, perfectly happy with my own PAS, might not be able to resist. Ahhhhh, I must have the Palomino, we can even start a club of co-owners, The Pals! lol, thank you for watching and the comment which made slip into goofy imagination land.

If you're going to buy a '24 and all the farkles anyway, the paint is basically a free add-on. That being said there's a lot of killer deals on brand new 22's & 23s that you could paint any way you wanted and save some cash.

Your right about the paint being a free add on at that point. While the paint on the CVO PA is great and the best you can get on any PA, there are professional painters out there who could lay down a masterpiece that'd make some weep. If I were a man who wanted a such a thing, I've seen a few leftover Bananarama PAs sitting at dealers that'd make quite a nice starting canvas. Thank you for watching!

Have to admit, the CVO is a great looking bike. That's about it, though... I was talking to the guys at the dealership before it was released, asking what HD could offer in a CVO Pan America other than paint and accessories. Nothing! The 1250 is the best engine they have... What might have been interesting is if they offered the CVO in a smaller engine, like a 950... Of course knock the price down too. 😂

The paint really is stunning in sunlight, certainly it's the biggest draw. I'm still surprised it didn't have a bigger engine. But hey, I'm still hoping for a smaller, lighter 975 version so I'm somehow running in the opposite direction. Thank you for watching!

@@Chase_N I'm with you! CVOs are known for having the bigger engines. I don't know that a bigger engine on the PA makes much sense - it's already crazy fast! Now the smaller engine, that will definitely get my attention. I'd probably feel more confident taking it off road. Question is, would I keep both or trade for the smaller engine? I'd love to have both. Keep up the videos, I'll keep watching!😁

@@ThePolishDad A lighter bike may make you a little braver. It'd help if it's less expensive too. Yeah, the question would then become do I need the bigger bike too? If a 975 came in at a lower price with cruise control, ABS, and lighter weight, essentially a simplified Pan Am without the electronic suspension & traction control, it'd dominate. Plenty of guys running around on Tenere 700s which come with nothing more than ABS who'd likely think about giving the (let's call it) "Continental 975" a shot.

The CVO Pan Am is just a fancy paint job, it is not a CVO as it is not hotted up more than standard. Then do you really what more power in the Pan Am? I fitted a V&H muffler to mine and it made an amazing difference, at least they could have fitted a better muffler and different ECU map.

  • @Chase_N

Most people don't realize the PA CVO doesn't come from the factory with the Screamin' Eagle muffler. If you're paying for something with a CVO badge on it, it should come with more power. But no, I don't really need more power. But I kind of want to know what a RevMax 1400cc would feel like to ride. lol, in this very moment I have enough power to kill myself, but with even more power I could always kill myself deader. It's how we ended up with everything from spear tips, to smokeless gunpowder, to nuclear weaponry. Ahhhhh, bring on the 1850cc Super Pan Am!

I would argue something in favor of the CVO is residual value. At least in my area, used Pan Ams don't seem to hold their value well, particularly the '21 models. I would hope the CVO would fare better in that regard. Farkles added by an owner rarely translate to resale value, in my experience.

  • @Chase_N

    @Chase_N

That may end up being the PA CVO's saving grace. I mentioned in a reply that if I did get a PA CVO, I'd buy a standard set of OE bags and crash guards and pop the CVO stuff off. If I did have a spill, it would be less likely to harm the harder to find (and likely more expensive) parts. But I'm a weirdo who spends time in gravel every time I leave and return to my house due to living on a country gravel road. I'm guessing 99.9999% of CVO owners would never go anywhere near a road like mine so it'd never be a concern for them. I bought my 2021 PAS in June 2023 for $14999, and was just offered $15000 in trade if I bought a new 2023 or 2024. I think location has begun to matter more and more when it comes to sales & trade in offers. In the boonies (where I live), the Pan Ams are maybe holding their value better? Still, I've noticed some dealers are offering less than they used to for trades and jacking up the prices on used bikes. I'd swear I seen a dealer asking $13K for 2014 Sportster, more than it would've been brand new. Things are just crazy these days I guess. Stay safe out there and thank you for watching!

Check @MinnowMoto 's comment below. If one wanted buy & apply every extra part which comes on the Pan Am CVO to the Pan Am Special, you'd end up very close or likely right at the MSRP for the CVO. Plus you get paint. Not a bad deal, but H-D knows what people expect when they see or hear "CVO". What's the 1st thing you always hear any owner of a CVO brag about? Paint? Chrome/Blacked out trim? Stereo? Nope, it's always "More stonkin' cubes and torques!". Only after that, maybe they'll say "and just look at that paint!". There's a certain cachet to owning a CVO, and the main reason is the engine. Like I replied to another commenter, if someone buys a Pan Am CVO, I'll welcome them with open arms. Really, it's a great bike and not a bad bike by any means. I'm still disappointed a bike 3 years newer than mine with a CVO badge has the exact same engine though.

Ok ill play. Why yuk someones yum? Does it make you feel better? What is pointless to you, as well as beautiful, may not be for another rider. Not trying to yuk anyone's yum. I started the video out with how I thought the paint was great and that it's well equipped. But without the bump in CCs, it seems incomplete. As far as "crappy", I said the "extras" your getting didn't seem to add up and that was kind of crappy. I remember when I 1st heard about the possible release of the CVO PA, everyone I talked to instantly went to one subject- the engine. "Oh man, do think they'll go to just 1300? 1350? Nah, it'll be 1400+!". Nobody said a word or dreamed about what paint scheme it may have. Nope, just the bump in CCs and the hot nasty HP and TQ that comes with it. If you're trying to get every single part from the catalog besides the SE exhaust (can't believe it's not included) then maybe it's the right bike. I don't think it's a bad, I didn't say that at all. I just said I was disappointed and had really hoped for a bigger engine. I'd never begrudge anyone for buying a CVO PA and would welcome them with open arms. I'm the Pan Am guy at group rides where everyone walks up asking questions that I love answering. When I'm asked "How comfortable". "How heavy", or "I wonder if I could reach the ground" I just tell them to go ahead and sit on it. I hope I clarified everything and thank you for watching!

@@rickybobby6760 When the new CEO Jochen Zeitz took over, he killed a bunch of ideas (like the Bronx) and instead wanted to make H-D "more premium" like Ducati or Ferrari. I'm not sure "less expensive" is in that dudes vocabulary. The 975 in the Bronx was going to be capable of something around 115Hp & 70-80Tq. That'd do nicely in a Continental 975 (I'm dreamin' here) which would likely weigh 475-500lbs. Those numbers are in Africa Twin and Desert X territory, almost like H-D could have a competitor in the middleweight ADV category? But hey, they wouldn't want that. I think Zeitz may have murdered the Conti 975 because the profit margins weren't high enough. Maybe not though, we can still hope. H-D does occasionally do a mid year drop so we could see a Conti 975 this year. I'm gonna cross my fingers.

There's always been a small bump in CIs as far back as I can remember. When all of the bikes had Twin Cam 88"s the CVOs got 95"s. Then they switched the lineup to the TC 96" and CVOs went to 103"s, the main lineup was updated to the TC 103" & CVOs went to the 110". The M8s started off with the 107" and CVOs got 114", when M8 114"s became the norm CVOs went 117", and now there's a mix of 114"s and 117"s with CVOs being 121". Now I could be slightly off, but that's what I can remember from my youth to now. The paint is an extra, and very nice, but everyone who got a CVO bragged about the bigger engine. That was the card they pulled to lord over lowly, standard engine having peasants or plebs. (I say this as always having been a proud but lowly, standard engine having peasant or pleb myself).

I've owned an Aprilia and a Kawasaki, they were of the same build quality as the Pan Am. Maybe I should've went with Honda though?- kzread.info/dash/bejne/fKaKq7R6gdq5ZdY.html Your right about Suzuki, I remember when the V-Strom 1000s were dropping stator magnets, a feature for sure. Everyone should get the new V-Strom 1050 which still have clutch basket issues & need valve services every 15K miles. Who doesn't love tearing the tops of their cylinders off at least once a year, much more fun than riding. Oh, why not an Aprilia Tuareg instead, valve service intervals are at 12K miles, more often means more fun! Just make sure you get them both in on time or your warranty will be void, another pleasure all its own. Look, of course I'm being cheeky, but those halcyon days are over. Every manufacturer is pumping out stuff that isn't quite right. Ducatis are leaking oil with 0 miles on the clock, Hondas are leaking oil too. New BMW GS1300's now have starting issues just like early Pan Ams. KTMs, well, their rep is just silly and sad at this point. Something is wrong. Everything is being built at as frugally as possible. I hate having to say it, I love motorcycles. It's now the luck of the draw with every manufacturer. Most people have a good experience with every manufacturer nowadays, but there's always a select few that get the shaft no matter which manufacturer they select. H-D has a bad rep from their days of AMF ownership, it's lore and has been repeated so often from back then it stuck. Newer H-Ds (by newer I mean Evo engines to M8s) have been quite reliable. Honda was reliable for so long the reliable rep stuck like H-D's rep from their AMF days. If I'd have told you there are new Hondas leaking or burning oil (XR150Ls are burning oil badly and Honda says it's normal) most would be shocked. Folks still talk about Honda reliability even though issues like in the vid I posted or the XR150Ls burning oil is a persistent problem. Japanese, European, made in 'merica!- nothing is perfect and no manufacturer is immune. I say get what you can & enjoy it. If I see you on 2 wheels out there I'll be sure to give you a wave no matter what you're riding, even if it's a Tomos moped. Thank you for the comment, it really made me think about the state of manufacturing these days. Thank you for watching too!
