SONY ZV-1 REVIEW | NOT The "PERFECT" Camera Yet

NEW FroPack 2 Lightroom Presets
froknowsphoto.com/fropack2/ (40% off)
This is a REVIEW of the Sony ZV-1 Vlogging Camera that's based off of the Sony RX100 Mark V. Sony released this camera with the focus squarely on Vloggers. But in my opinion, this camera FAILS at being a vlogging camera for one specific reason (watch the video for what that is). On top of that I ran into a MAJOR issue when wearing my polarized sunglasses and trying to vlog.

Uff I saw the full video. Let me tell you this: I have sony rx100 v which does not have mic input ❌ I have the sony a7iii but is too huge if I want to go out from my recording studio (and you know its limitated screen) ❌ Sony rx100 vii does not have f1.8 so i cant record decently in my room or living room without my day lights gear Canon m50 poor autofocus and has not f1.8 (but you can change it) nevertheless I dont trust its autofocus so then no ❌ Sony a6500 The same thing with the camera size and I cant see myself through the screen Sony zv1 is the most closed to the needs ✅I have ¿which ones? ¡Record in my own house out of my studio! Only using an external mic with a decent low light response I dont know if I am the only one who has been waiting for this years I would love a better stabilization But I know any camera is perfect 💔

I think that this camera is great for events where they don't let you get mirrorless cameras into, like music festivals, or clubs. It's like the perfect camera when you hit the road and don't want the attention you would get from walking around with a mirrorless cam with a lens.

Saw other reviews of this today and by far I always prefer Jared’s reviews because dude is honest and the key point of investing in a camera is true I would rather vlog with my phone and invest in a real camera that can grow as time goes on because $800 for something that you can’t really grow with would suck

Front facing smartphone cameras are much much worse when compared to this. The main point of this camera is the size/quality balance. Many people value small size because of the ease of use it provides. I used to shoot a lot with Ricoh GR. It's great for landscape, travel, street and documentary if you are OK with the fixed lens limitation. Because it is so small, you can carry it around everywhere in a bigger pocket. It results in many more pictures taken. It's also not intimidating in comparison to bigger cameras. I took it everywhere all the time and took a ton of great photos. It has to be experienced to understand. GR's main fault was the autofocus. (I have recently bought Fuji X-T100 at a great price. I won't go into specific reasons, but I was very disappointed in how heavy it is! It's a bloody brick and it's just an entry level model. Definitely not a carry everywhere camera..) ZV-1 promises to offer a lot of the same as GR, but with a stellar autofocus. Not everyone wants to use this purely for vlogging. I suspect that many future owners want to take great photos too. This camera is much cheaper than RX100 models with the same autofocus performance and it also offers better video/audio capabilities and arguably a better flipout screen. Of course not everyone will appreciate THIS particular combination of features, but for me it's almost a perfect camera. Ideal for travel/documentary photography or video. I could use a smartphone, but I just need a certain RAW quality in my images. 1" sensor is about as low as I would comfortably go..

Thanks for reviewing this camera. I am torn between a GoPro Hero 9 and this. The action camera GoPro is mainly for when I do motorcycle touring and want to record those moments, but I also like to test ride new models and want something that I can vlog with during the review. From what I can tell, this is limited in its format to present as wide a view in the vlog mode, but offers better low light performance due to the 1.8 aperture. As a compromise, the GoPro seems to be a better choice overall for my needs, since most of my riding and reviewing is in daylight. Thanks for saving me from a $900 mistake. And thanks for doing what you do, I watched all of your videos for several years and learned how to use my Nikon D500DSLR and teach a friend that I eventually sold it to. You rock. Peace Out!

I shoot video professionally with Sony mirrorless (A7iii) and am not a vlogger. I just got my ZV-1 today. I purchased it because I like having a "pocket" camera for just everyday rando video stuff (and vacations, if it's ever safe to travel anywhere in the future). The features that appealed to me were the stellar autofocus (with eye AF), a flip out screen (as opposed to the traditional Sony "tip up" screen) for easy high and low angle shots and the excellent color and image quality in such a portable body. I'll also probably use it for b-roll stuff on work projects. The 24-70 is fine with me because I don't plan to turn it towards myself and walk down the street anytime soon...even though, I realize that's who this camera is being marketed to. I guess you'd say it's going to be my "toy" camera.

Thanks for another great review J! A fact which you didn’t mention: when the cam is switched off and you flip around the display, the cam powers on automatically 😃 The cam is interesting & got cool features, but the price is too high IMO. A Lumix FZ300 got a flip TOUCH display, got 4 K with 24 fps and other options, a viewfinder a mic plug in and headphone plug in as well. The built-in mic is not very good, so you‘ll need a external mic. But look at the price difference! btw: I still got my Vixia Mini X (here in Europe called Legria Mini X) and it does the job great, although it got ‚only‘ FHD. Greetings from Germany, Dimi

Totally agree Jared. Can’t look at that over-$1200 price (up here in Canada, eh?), and not look at something that will let you do a lot lot more: like the m50, m6 ii, or any small camera that lets you get wider than 24mm. The m50 in your video is not much bigger than that camera at all... it’s way cheaper, and you can swap lenses. As you know very well, the tinier and lighter the camera, the harder it is to get stable footage handheld, which is what most ‘vloggers’ do. Plus, regardless of 4K or not, it’s a 1” sensor. That’s less than MFT, and the m50 is APSC. That will matter indoors. Or in lower light. I’ll take the better lens options, and larger sensor over tiny sensor 4K all day. We also need to keep in mind that audiences (90% plus) are watching the videos on their phones in HD or lower res. At some point shooting 4K is laughably overkill. Great post!

Nice video! ZV-1 is the perfect starting camera. The only down side it has (against the M50, 90D, Sl3) is they have lens options for macro, and the touch screen menu for on the fly changes. For good photo, video, audio (which the rode wireless go would couple well with the ZV-1) but I dont see the need unless your in a really noisy environment, stabilization, focus, clean hdmi out, no record limit, no 4k crop, good in low light, internal USB charging and can use a power bank, charge while using, you can see the audio bars on the screen so you know you have audio (or if you dont, you'll know right away) also that record light is awesome (you actually know you are recording) The crop factor doesnt distort your face like many other cameras do, product showcase mode, de-focus for blurry background, and no need for adapters, lenses, microphone, carry bag, and far less editing time, its clearly a winner. Straight up $1000 and nothing (or not much else needed) cant beat that really. Im a Canon user (of the above cameras) and I just recently ordered this little guy to take on spur of the moment trips and outdoor ventures (put it in the pocket and go basically) Im anxious to get it and see how it does.

The screen disappearing when wearing polarized glasses issue, I had that a few years back with an HTC 10 smartphone too. It's something to do with the way the LCD display is made. It is pretty shitty yeah, so thanks for mentioning it, no other reviewer did as far as I know!

Interesting point with the sunglasses, good review over all. Gerald undone also mentioned that you cannot open the battery compartment when anything is screwed into the tripod mount, making it an extra hassle as the battery is small and has to be changed often.

@@45thnewsbrigade-tacticalop60 That convenient when you charge at home, but out in the field you probably don't want to wait or have a cable attached to it while you shoot, you just want to pop that door open, change the battery, and keep shooting.

11:15 That's a result of the polarization layer in the LCD screen stack. The other LCD panels have two, which are fixed at 90° angles so you only lose some light when rotated at 45° angles. They *could* fix it by using a better LCD panel with a second polarizing layer, but that might require sourcing different parts or possibly retooling, depending on how thick the panel is.

I agree with what you said Jared, they should have made the lens 20-70 at least to get more in on the wider side, and my god the polarised sunglasses not working will annoy alot of people who will use it to vlog out in the sun..

the polarized glasses interaction depends on both the QA of the glasses and the QA of the camera screen. Some manufacturers don't always have the polarizing filter lined up perfectly (both camera and glasses). It could be that it's your specific camera and other zv-1's are unaffected, but if they're all like that.... yikes.

Jared, please do a review of the Sony a6600! I need more information about it. Also, is it better to go for the Sony a6600 or a full frame mirrorless camera like the Sony a7 III? I will use them to shoot video documentary for the majority of time. However, I love the ability to control photo with the full frame sensor. Thanks!

I’d be interested in how the Sony compares to the Canon G7X mk3 that I have. I’m pretty happy with mine. Only the AF lets it down. A firmware update has improved things but Sony’s eye detect or Canon’s dual pixel AF seems much better.
