Sony Tethered Shooting Setup (2023)

Ғылым және технология

In this video I take a look at how to tether a Sony camera using a few different methods. It's possible to tether to a computer using both a wired or wireless connection in Sony's Imaging Edge Desktop Software or Capture One. The wireless connection options shown here work for the Sony A1, A7RV, A7SIII, A7IV, A6700, FX3, and FX30. The older A7RIV and A9II can also do wireless tethering but have a different menu interface than what is shown in this video.

    The video was great, and it wasn’t long at all because it kept my interest all the way through. Thank you! I would love to see you do a video tethering wirelessly to the iPad with Capture One. I have a Sony a7r5 and have the darndest time trying connect wirelessly to my iPad. Capture One says it could be done, but I just cannot get it to work. Thanks.

    I am glad that you enjoyed the video! Interestingly enough I have an iPad but I'm too stuck in my ways to try it for tethered shooting. 😅 I am aware of Capture One for the iPad, I need to load it and give it a go!

    Great video! Very thorough with lots of visual demonstrations, perfect for my learning style. Great timing too, I'm looking for a USB-C tethering setup to connect my Sony A7iv to my MacBook Pro to transfer RAW photos. Unfortunately I don't have Capture One, so I'll need need an app to bridge the gap between the camera and Photoshop/Lightroom. What are your thoughts on the Smart Shooter 5 app from Tether Tools? Apparently it has a Lightroom plugin. Lastly, is Capture One the ultimate setup for tethering? A native connection to your camera must have speed benefits. Did you buy the software outright or do you have a subscription? Keep up the great work.

    I am glad that you enjoyed the video, I always learn with lots of hands on and visual demonstrations also. 😃 I use Lightroom for image cataloging/editing and for tethering occasionally (when I am using a Nikon or Canon camera) but I haven't used it to tether to a Sony. I have heard of Smart Shooter but I haven't had a chance to try it, with the ability to generate QR codes it looks like it would be great for things like school yearbook photos. I find that the more robust live-view functionality, camera control, and wireless tethering support of Capture One is more well suited to my work. Currently I am not on the subscription and opted to purchase outright, since the iPad/iPhone version of C1 is subscription only I may go that route in the future. One other way you could tether to Lightroom without having to purchase any additional software would be to use Sony's Imaging Edge Desktop software to tether and capture to a specific folder. Then set Lightroom to auto import from the folder you have the Sony software to save to. 😃

    Is there a way to tether so I can control the camera using my phone instead of using Wi-Fi? I just want to straight up connect using the USBC from FX3 to my phone.

    This is possible if you instal the mobile version of Capture One on your phone. Perhaps I will explore this in a future video. 😃

    have you found a way to get the images in Viewer to display full screen? i don't understand how a desktop tether app has no full-screen viewer option... 😅

    I have not unfortunately, this is one of the reasons why I was so happy to be able to wirelessly tether to Capture One. I will have to play with Viewer again to see if one of the recent updates changed anything but I'm not optimistic. If you can definitively give Capture One a go, you will be happy you did! 😃

    @@JeremySmithPhotographywell I would of used C1 but with their terrible customer service when I enquired about my A7R4A kept locking up when it was tethered to C1 (I basically got this 🤷 in my emails) I can tether into LR using a watch folder but it's very slow and won't auto rotate the image

    Is this possible with Lightroom (not Classic)?

  • @JeremySmithPhotography

    @JeremySmithPhotography

    9 ай бұрын

    Lightroom doesn't have tether support at all, Lightroom Classic can tether natively with Canon and Nikon cameras but needs a plugin to tether with a Sony camera. Or if you are using Lightroom Classic without a plugin you can setup a watch folder and simultaneously run Imaging Edge Desktop. I have set this up before but long story short I recommend just using Capture One, while I use Lightroom/Lightroom Classic to edit I still use C1 to tether.

    Do you have info how to tether to LRC?

  • @JeremySmithPhotography

    @JeremySmithPhotography

    There are 3rd party plugins to make it possible but at this stage in the game Capture One is so much better at tethering than LRC. Despite being an LRC users I prefer to use C1 for tethering.
