Shooting Tethered With Capture One Pro: How To Get Started

Welcome to my guide on how to shoot tethered using Capture One software and your camera. If you’ve never used your camera whilst tethered to a computer you are missing out on some really great features and a much better way of working.

Shooting tethered has many advantages over shooting with just your camera. Having a nice big screen to check your work is invaluable and makes it so much easier to find mistakes in your photos. Also there is no better way to check if your photos are in focus than having a computer monitor to check your images.
All this is made possible by shooting tethered. There are many applications that you can use to connect your camera to your computer but in this video I am going to show you how to do this using Capture One pro. Once you start shooting tethered, you are going to really find it hard to just use your camera alone. Capture one can be a little bit intimidating in the beginning. In fact, shooting tethered is something that people think is really difficult, but in this video I am going to show you how you can set up a tethered session really quickly and really easily.
And don't forget that if you have any questions, make sure to leave them in the comment section and I will be happy to help you where I can.

Thanks. I had not shot tethered with C1 earlier but I recently acquired a used Phase One camera and have shot just one test session this past week. Your video filled almost all the gaps (the one it didn’t was how to control focus stacking from the computer, but I can do that from the camera).

Can someone explain to me why I cannot change either the shutter speed, the ISO or the F stop in the dialog box? Everything seems to be locked except for the shutter button. I have to change either one of these features on-camera. I am using Capture One 20 for Fuji. Thanks in advance.

This is amazing! I’m learning about Capture One bc I’m a photo assistant and lighting technician so this video will make my skills grow so much! I just have one question that I missed. Basically, when you create a folder to save the images, Capture One creates the folder into the hard drive, right? Thanks a lot!

Hey Arturo! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. You are correct. Or you can create the folder separately and then just point capture one to it. Hope that makes sense.

Excellent video. Very Helpful. The idea that you can disconnect the tether cable, continue to shoot while mobile, then reconnect and down load the raw files is great process. But in my case I have a D800, Capture One 22 Pro and reconnecting the cable did not download the additional images. What release of software did this feature start?

Dan, you have created an amazing video that enables anyone to set up their camera with the Capture One app. Having said that, need your advice on how to set up the option to save my photos both on my XQD card and Laptop. I have a Nikon Z6 and Capture One 22 (Windows 11). Currently, all photos are saved only into my Laptop.

Hi, it all depends on the camera you are using. For most cameras, C1 will not let you save to the card. Only to the computer. On some cameras there is a setting that you can change that will save to both. Check this article to show you how to do it. support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/15108145393565-Saving-to-Memory-Card-and-Capture-One#:~:text=Certain%20camera%20brands%2C%20like%20Canon,or%20both%20when%20shooting%20tethered.

NIKON Z7ii Tethered to my Mac Studio with both cards installed in their respective slots gives the following message: Capture ONE Pro will give a message: "Camera Not Available"... My NIKON D850 yielded the same message to me before and I have totally forgot about that. I had to look it up which I have found the answer in the Capture ONE Pro Community. That explains what Dan Cantero was explaining in his video.

Hi Phil, yes you can as long as you have one of the supported cameras. In the old days (just a couple of years ago) you didn't have the option so its really good that they've started to implement this for some cameras.

Which camera do you use? I'm on a Canon R5 and I usually shoot with two cards, CFE and SD, both RAW. Having the option to save to my card while shooting tethered is important. Thanks.

Can't I just use an HDMI cable to my laptop? If that is possible, would it work with my already existing Adobe Photoshop Elements 15 software?

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    2 ай бұрын

HDMI Cable won't work because it doesn't carry the data it needs. You want to shoot into capture one or Lightroom and have the images transferred to the computer it has to be done via the USB cable. A HDMI cable connected from your camera to your computer, tv or monitor will only mirror the display on the back of your camera. Hope that make sense.

Also, remove any Nikon software that came with your camera.Sometimes it can cause conflicts that prevent it from connecting. Katya's comment is also a good one. I'll just add to make sure you are using the latest version of C1 as well as trying out a different USB cable and even a different USB port on your computer.

There is zero reason to spend 3x on a cable because it's orange, IMO. Anker makes angled USB C to A 16ft cables for 16$. Works great.

Thanks for the detailed description. That turned up a few options of 16 feet. Most "long" USB-C cables on Amazon top out at 10 feet in length. I've got plenty of those - I daisy chain 2 but I'd like to have a single good cable much longer. I've been tethering my Sony A7III for over a year with Imaging Edge Remote and love the process. I do a lot of focus stacking but haven't tried it in C1 yet.

Oh no! Ok. a few things to try. 1. Reset your camera to factory default. 2. Change the USB cable. 3. Try a different USB port on your computer. 4. Try it on a different computer. 5. Try using something else like Lightroom to see if it connects. 5. Check you camera is supported by C1 (There is a link in the description of where to check). Let me know how you go with those and we can see how I might be able to help you. Dan
