You hero! I took my PS4 apart to clean the fan, only to find it, that when powered on, it enters safe mode. The fan got louder and louder until it came up with the red line. I didn't tighten one of the screws on the heat sink enough! Thanks so much!

that you so much! I only went as far as removing the ssd and starting up my ps4 it finally turned on and the screen told me to turn it off I did just that, I reinstalled my ssd and it started up normally thank you so much!!

It actually worked :) I put some washers underneath the processor tightening bracket, tightened them pretty well and my PS4 works again like a charm! Thanks for the valuable advice!

I applied pressure and it worked so far has not switched off do I still open it up to tighten or loosen the pressure plate?

@jose camarena It can be either from your power supply or the board might need reflowing. Try also taking out all the cables (power, hdmi etc) then wait 2 min, plug in power first then power on wait till its on if it does turn on and then plug in hdmi. If not, then you probably need to have the board reflowed.

Ali Ramez Yea the second time you try will do one beep but third time will power on again and off. You probably need to get your board reflowed. Most likely the issue that is causing your system not to power on is a solder point on the board somewhere that went bad and needs to be heated up to melt and re-attach. Keep in mind reflowing should be done by a professional.

hmm you might need to but before you do have you tried taking out the battery on the board and running a heat gun over the entire board to warm it up then go over the mem chips ram etc more in detail and then let it cool down and try running the system. If still no good maybe the problem is with the processor itself or another component shorting the system like the bluray drive or hard drive. also check the power supply in the system also, maybe it's faulty

My problem is the ps4 will turn on (and stay on) until unplugged also there is a blue light that slowly blinks and no image is shown on my tv. However the same hdmi cable from my ps4 works on other devices so could it be a power problem? But if it were a power problem wouldn't the ps4 immediately turn off? Please help I need to know if I have to get a new ps4.

I can help, i fixed my one by doing this. I held the ps4 power button until it went to safe mode then i connected my controller with my charger to the ps4 then i clicked on rebuild data base and that fixed my issue

Omg thank you! My problem was actually step 6. I just purchased a brand new launch edition ps4 from a retailer on ebay and when it arrived. It was blinking the blue light of death right of the box. I couldn't find anything wrong with my hdmi cable, power cord, or HD. I applied the pressure over the blue ray drive and it came on. I've already contacted sony though. They are suppose to ship me a box for replacement. Even though its working now I'd rather let them replace it with one that doesn't have this issue. Thanks for the video though.

CMILLSY20 you don’t need to download it on safe mode, you do it all through your PS4. All you need to do is plug the usb stick into the PS4. 1st (optional): take out your hardrive, blow into the ports just incase you’ve got dust and plug it back in, screw it in etc. 2nd) plug in your usb stick (with the operating system on) and put it into safe mode and then reinstall it. You will lose everything you have and depending on how much storage you’ve used on the hardrive, the longer it’ll take. Other note: if you do have a spare hardrive lying around, use that instead.

Gunners-x- no difference in connection but I’ve always had good connection so hard to tell. I knew it was the hard drive because when I took it out and started up the ps4 it came up with an error message saying I needed the hardrve instead of the blue light flashing. This shows that it’s the hard drive that has failed.

Would I have a red light issue, if I took it apart, and possibly got a couple wires switched around? Or the cable that looks like a ribbon, do the ends matter so long as they fit the same?

It's possible. You can watch a disassembly video of it and make sure you put the cables in the correct places to rule that out.

My ps4 beeps 3 times and the fan speeds up and then go's off (just resently put a new power supply in) and it didn't do this til i updated to 5.55 (been doing this for a year now) would like to know anything that can help thank you

My ps4 was hit by a power surge durning a thunderstorm, wouldn't come on, I ordered a refurbished power pack and now the power will come on for a few minutes and than cut off..I manage to get to safe mode but it always turns off before any one of them can complete. Can you give me any ideas or could the refurbish power pack be bad.

JaVonte Lester Maybe the refurb power pack is bad (and by power pack I'm assuming your talking about the power supply inside the PS4), or the board has a short on it somewhere from the surge, I'm not sure. Try using a different power pack, if the problem continues you might have a board issue.

can yo show us like you disassembel it so we know what to do

when taking the hard drive out the system turns on and gives the message about no hard drive, but how do i go as to re-installing the software? it will not go into safe mode. after putting it back in it will go into checking storage but will get stuck at 12% for hours, and will not go into safe mode

+Troy You will probably need a new hard drive, maybe the drive is bad and it wont read certain sectors. There are detailed videos on youtube on how to re-install from scratch step by step but since your drive seems to be bad, you would first need to get a new hard drive.

Hey sir, I have a PS4 and just the updated the Latest version Software Oct 2021 in my Console. On first it update all the stuff and it turns off after I thought it would restart but instead it stay remains as dead. After I gave my PS4 sometime and again try to start but i had a problem of BLOD. When I pressed the power button then the blue light stays for 2 to 3 seconds and it turns off as it is always. Hi, its been a long time since I did this video so I am not too familiar with the most recent updates. However if you tried the steps in the video and they didn't help, the only thing I can think of would be to somehow get the system in safe mode to reinstall the firmware with a flash drive/usb drive. It's possible the firmware got corrupt during the update.

I bought a PS4 a year ago just got released to europe and it had no problems at all. BTW im playing for long time on games and still works

The processor might need to be reballed by a professional. Either the contacts have broken apart on the processor from making a secure connection to the board or something in that nature.

Old Geezy It can sometimes do that when you just unplug or shut off the system suddenly but if it keeps doing that, it might have a short somewhere or a break in solder point on the board which causes it to lose power suddenly and not boot normal. If that is the case, you would need to have the board reflowed by a professional.

jeez I've tried everything except the steps voiding the warranty and I cant get mine to work, I can't even get my console to boot into safe mode.

Step number 7 was really helpfull; I made a complex massage to ps's heart (processor) through the plastic cover, even not taking it off. All other steps might be also quite usefull but my case was really tough(( After hard massage with some krack noise ps4 initiated SAFEMODE and i immediately chose point #7 full initialisation with HDD format. Robert Dailey You might have a faulty drive, power supply, or need to get the board reflowed by a professional. Do the steps in the video to first rule out the hard drive as being an issue. If that's not the issue, it might be your power supply inside the system that's not working correctly. But I would lean more toward getting the board reflowed by a professional.

You probably need to have your motherboard reflowed by a professional. The contacts under the processor are not good so the solder on the board needs to be heated up to reattach.

All right question this is 5 years later but my PlayStation had the red light of death while on a carpet floor my dad said it was because of the floor but I have some very high end games and my ps4 only over heats when I play those high end games for like 3-4 hours plz help

Would always be smart to place the ps4 in a well ventilated area and not carpet, but seems you need to open your ps4 and clean off the old dried out thermal paste off of the processor and head sink block, and add new thermal paste. Also clean out any dust buildup with computer air/dust spray can. Make sure to hold the can straight and only bend the spray straw in the direction you want or it will spray out liquid. This should fix your overheating issue.

What kind of thermal paste you need?

You can use any thermal paste you want, but I would lean toward something not too conductive in case it leaks onto parts near it, so it wont short. But the less conductive, the less efficiently it will transfer the heat.

Hey pwrd, my PS4 started making weird noises. It always would show the PS Logo when being turned on, but it would not boot. It would say the PS4 could not start. Upon further inspection, I opened my PS4 and the noise was definitely coming from the HDD. Also, the noise would only commence when the HDD was inserted, and when I removed it, the sound halted. It was a constant clicking noise. I'm guessing the head was stuck or something. My system turns on and off perfectly, with no audio or graphical issues. So, do you think I should replace the HDD or send it in just to play it safe? Here is the thing: I don't have a warranty and it costs $150. I can buy a very good HDD for $60 on Amazon right now. I'm positive that the reason my PS4 wasn't working was because of the failed HDD. What should I do? Thanks.

Hi yea the only moving part inside the ps4 is the HDD. The lever inside got stuck on the surface of the disk. There are tutorials on KZread that show how to fix that but once you open up a hard drive its definitely not trustworthy to use it since it can fail at any point. Replacing the HDD will def fix your problem

It can be a many assortment of problems. Go through the steps on the video one by one. But if you have warranty, (comes with 1 year warranty if you bought it new from a store) then I suggest contacting sony for a replacement. :)

No, you can always try disassembling it, cleaning the old thermal paste off making sure none has leaked out onto the other chips surrounding the processor, and reapply new thermal paste (not too much for it to leak) and reassembling the ps4. If still no luck, you can try tightening the screws on the bracket that holds down the heatsink to the processor, or loosening them to see which will work best with your system to get it working. 99% of the time this fixes the issue.

+EsoN91 Hi, I would lean toward the processor needing to be reballed, but first try reinstalling the OS on the hard drive. If that doesn't work, then try a new hard drive. If still nothing then you would need to try and take the unit apart, and clean off the old thermal paste from the processor and heat block and apply new thermal paste to see if that solves it. Again if nothing then you would need to get your processor reballed by a professional.

If what your saying is it turns on for a second and shuts right off, then here is the reply I gave someone else as well. "The only method I know for that, requires some expertise. You would need to take it apart, get the main board out, remove the battery on the board, use a heatgun to warm up the board a bit, then use the heat gun to go over the processor for about 25-30 seconds (keeping in mind the board would need to be perfectly flat so when the processor heats up it wont move out of place) and then run the heat gun over the board warming up the chips etc to get the solder re-flowing. Again this should be done professionally since it will be very easy to ruin the board if you don't know what your doing. But ya this should fix that issue. "

So I got to the part where hard drive was out and I pressed on the right side of the ps4, still nothing on the screen but the ps4 went from blue to white. Any ideas?

The push is temp fix since it will eventually lose the pressure put onto it and stop working again, so perm fix would be to actually either flip the inside bracket like others have mentioned in comments, or tighten screws a bit for the brackets. :)

Thanks for the reply back unfortunately last night I got the blinking blue light when I started up the ps4 from stand by mode and it did that for 5m until I held down the power button and it restarted is this normal thx again.

So mine started working almost flawless after pushing really hard in the spot you said to test. What do you think caused it to start working? Did I put more tension on that metal piece or something?

Yea it has to do with how the heat sink block is siting on the processor. Some of them have it pushed down to hard on the processor causing it not to function correctly and some are not siting on it strong enough to transfer the heat so after a while the processor stops working untill the problem is fixed. So putting the pressure on it in your case I think helped either release some pressure from the metal bracket and bent it a bit so when you release it comes back just a tad bit more so it wont be on there as tough. I wouldn't be able to tell unless I actually opened and looked at your specific unit but that's just what I'm assuming.

I would love to just open it up and tighten it right as you did in the video, I just don't want to void the warranty, especially since I only get a crash about every 10 hours of gaming so far, the I just put more pressure on that piece again lol. DotsonPhotography well the thing is, you can always try flipping the metal bracket or brace or whatever you like to call it over, since it naturally has a bend in it that gives it like a belly, if the side its on doesn't work for you, you can try flipping it and screwing it back on and see if the other way around solves the problem. But ya opening it would void the warranty :)

matt slagel Maybe they are referring to going into safe mode and re-installing the system software. There are some youtube videos which show how to go into safe mode and re-set the system software if its corrupt or clear user data and start over.

Check all the steps in order to see what the problem can be, because it can be a variety of things, stemming from hard drive to over heating. I'd think maybe thermal paste would need to be replaced but again I would test all the steps first in order before replacing thermal paste, and if none of the steps help then you might need to get your board reflowed by a professional or reball your gpu

its probably overheating, take it apart and clean off the old thermal paste from the processor with a cloth and put on new thermal paste and also make sure to clean out any dust.

David Alcala Try unplugging everything, leave it out for 2 min, then plug just the power in, power it on and see if it powers on normally, then put the hdmi in. If not try removing the Hard Drive and putting it back in. If that doesnt work either, then try the pressure method thats shown in the video. At the end if still nothing, something might have broken off the board (a resistor or something) or you might need to get the board reflowed by a professional.

maybe you didnt tighten the screws for the block enough and it isn't making strong enough contact. Check that as well. Also check and make sure the fan is working

So when i went to safe mode, i went to the Initialize PS4™ (Reinstall System Software) option and it shut down on me.After that it won't go into safe mode no matter how many times i press it.Since i bought it used online sending it to sony isn't an option. So any advice?

The system is still within the first year of being launched and beyond the 30 day retailer period. Call Sony, they should service you for free/cheap. It's not like it was possible for anyone to buy a ps4 365 days ago.

yea, regardless of where you got it, it still has 1 year manufacture warranty so sony should replace it. If not you would need to try the steps in the video 1 by 1 and see which works for you.

what happens to the warranty if we remove the hard drive?

The only method I know for that, requires some expertise. You would need to take it apart, get the main board out, remove the battery on the board, use a heatgun to warm up the board a bit, then use the heat gun to go over the processor for about 25-30 seconds (keeping in mind the board would need to be perfectly flat so when the processor heats up it wont move out of place) and then run the heat gun over the board warming up the chips etc to get the solder re-flowing. Again this should be done professionally since it will be very easy to ruin the board if you don't know what your doing. But ya this should fix that issue.

I am getting a strange sound coming form the console ever few seconds after I turn it on which sounds like a a HDD cycling or a disk drive loading. After a few moments I get the red light of death afterwards. At first I though that it was the HDD so I took that out and the console still made that sound in safe mode when booted up. As far as I can tell my fans are still running as when idle I can feel a slight air flow from the back of the console. The system didn't start acting up until the noise started to happen. The system doesn't get that warm to the touch after the fail safe shuts the system down. Could the fans or the disk drive be to blame for the noise and possibly the shut downs or am I missing something?

EvilSanta482 Maybe the fan went bad or something got caught in it, so it spins but not how its suppose to, so it might not be cooling it off enough and causes it to overheat and shut down. Because aside from the fan and HDD there isn't any other moving parts inside the system to be making any noise

pwrdbykyank As far as I can tell the fans are not functioning properly. I removed the HDD and the sound was still being heard. I am in the process of tearing it apart to see just what the situation is.

I will but it might be a while since I won't probably get around to it for a while. Especially as i need to find a good source of parts first as I will most likely need some kind of spare part for this.

My ps4 switches on for a second or two then dies. Day one launch console, warranty ended months ago. Tried all sorts of fixes, safe mode, hard drive out, hdmi etc etc nothing worked until today. I got my hand palm down and pushed down moderately on the top of the ps4 console lying horizontal and then powered it up and to my amazement it worked, once the light turned white i then took my hand off and it stays on for the duration of my session, the only problem is once i turn it off or put it back in rest mode it happens all over again but adding the pressure on top gets it going, it sometimes take a few attempts but i have managed to get it going several times today. Does anyone on here know how i can go about fixing it permanently?. i tried looking at the power brick inside but it all looked perfectly fine. Its so frustrating it can't be nothing to serious if a bit of added pressure gets it going.

Help! My ps4 turns on and has the blinking blue light and the ps4 icon shows up but then it shuts right back off. I've updated and restored my ps4 back to the default factory settings but nothing works! Please someone help, it my power cord, hdmi cable? I don't know please someone reply to this

It could be a many number of things. First I would check your hard drive. Try replacing it and see if you still have this problem. If so, next thing I would do is disassemble the system and remove the old thermal paste and apply new thermal paste and re-assemble the system. If still nothing, it might then be either your power supply or you would need to reflow your board (which requires a professional in that area to do).

Red light means its overheating, try replacing the thermal paste on the processor with new thermal paste.

I had a flashing blue light of death and no video. I attempted to boot into safe mode to no avail. I then disconnected the hard drive, started the device (let it boot for a few seconds), shut off the console, reconnected the hard drive and received working video with a system check on the drive, and rebooted with working video. Apparently in some cases this issue can be related to a fragmented drive and the process I described (you have to start it at least once without the HDD plugged in) temporarily corrects the drive. In some cases the issue will return as your drive is starting to fail and some times it will last longer.

+JustSayBrogy HD That sounds about right. If you have another TV, or LCD monitor, try doing the same with the PS4 connected to them if you are still having issues.

Mateo Gonzalez Yes? Update: The OEM hard drive continues to have this issue every so often so I am going to replace it. Sometimes you get a bad batch of hard drives which seems to be the case here.

Hey I've had this problem most of the 2 years I've owned my PS4 and it seems to come and go, also my touch sensors on the front doesnt work either sometimes. I've got my console resting on its side and ived tightened the little screw for the disc tray which I got recommended on KZread and seemed to work for a bit but comes back after a day. My console gets really hot and loud only after 30mins of use but I don't get a red light bar warning of overheating but I turn it off anyway incase. My software seems to work fine and I've only experienced freezing once or twice. Has anyone had the exact same problem and know anyway of fixing it ?.

+Sean Kane If you want try taking the PS4 apart and replacing the thermal paste on the processor as well as making sure there is no excess dust inside on the fan or anywhere else.

dulcetelixirdemure Hi, its up to you if you want to wait, but I would hope sony fixed most issues in the later builds of the PS4, but if you want to play it safe, you can wait till they come out with a refreshed ps4.

pwrdbykyank does the refreshed version really make a big difference. I'm dying to play arkham knight and infamous second son but I don't want any problems especially at the current price. I got the newer model of ps3 and other than the remote problem it works very well and i'm hoping to have a similar experience with ps4. they are selling the arkham knight bundle do you think they worked out the kinks with the models they are selling as a bundle. I don't know it would be smarter to wait but I'm so impatient to play some games before school kicks my ass in the fall.

Who knows when they will release a revised version. I would just try to find one that is more recent, preferably if sony sells them directly, I would buy from them. If not then just try to see if you can find out the build date. Also they come with 1 year warranty so you would be covered either way :)

Old Geezy If there is an error code I would assume there is something software wise wrong with the system, or maybe a bad hard drive. Have you tried going into safe mode and reinstalling the system software?

Wow, had a blue light loop that was seemingly infinite. Then I put some pressure on the right the side of the machine (as directed for someone with CPU symptoms) and it booted right up! Should I still open up the system and fiddle with the screws around the CPU or is it possible I've remedied the issue?

it's alive!!!!!!! thanks man I really appreciate your help, my metal bracket was a little bent so I tried loosening the screws and tightening them, didn't work so I flipped the thing and screwed the screws back on. I had to loosen one a tiny bit then it started working, turned it on and off five times right now, just for that I'm subscribing :), screw the warranty lol I'm not waiting for Sony to fix it

the bracket thats on top after you remove the top right cover of the PS4, it has 2 phillips type screws. You can watch one of the PS4 disassembly videos on youtube to see.

I just had this issue, nothing was working... not holding in any buttons... nothing..... but then out of frustration I repeatedly hit both the power and eject disk buttons simultaneously about 10 times and it entered sleep mode somehow and the light turned white.... I let it flash a few times white and powered it right back up

You can take it apart, and clean off the old thermal paste on the processor and apply new thermal paste. It will help dissipate the heat better.

I have a problem with my ps4. I turn it on, the light appears then turns off. Sometimes if I'm lucky I powers on I get to play for like 2 mins then turns off again.

It might be your power supply that's going bad, or you might need to reflow the board by a professional. When the board heats up and possibly the solder expands/contracts, it might have some week points that lose connection causing the board to shut off. There might be some tutorials on KZread showing how to use a blow dryer yourself but again I wouldn't recommend it because you can easily damage the board beyond repair.

The ps4 has been working fine so far the fan is louder than my other ps4 though

I have blue light of death on one day old console, I took out my hard drive and pressed the power button(didn't hold for seven seconds), the normal blue light of death thing happened, I then turned it off again and replaced hard drive, I then held down for seven seconds and safe mode booted up, I was then able to play on console after restarting from safe mode for about 5 minutes, It has now gone back to blue light of death, do you think this indicates a problem with the hard drive?

It seems it might be an issue with the processor not making a good connection with the board (solder being bad). If you bought it from a retail store, take it back for replacement. If not if it has warranty, call sony. If neither are an option you might need to have the processor reballed by a professional. I don't think its the drive since if it was, I don't see how it would work for a few minutes then stop again. But if you do have a spare hard drive, you can always try replacing it and testing it out.
