    Just cleaned and re-belted my cx355 from '02. These are such good machines. Can't deny the safe storage for all the CDs, and convenient access to a music collection, at the push of buttons. These really are home jukeboxes!

    Yes 🙌!!! They absolutely are. I actually have a Rowe AMI CD-51 Jukebox and it only holds 100 CD’s. I was planning to get rid of my Sony CDP CX225 200 cd, because it’s not working anymore, but have now changed my mind. It’s sure easier and smaller than moving a jukebox. 😝

    I have two 400 disc units purchased in 2006 dvd/cd player. I just hope the belts are still good. I really haven’t used them that heavily. Loaded up with discs, I don’t look forward to emptying them out to get repaired. Nice video. You know your craft well.

    I absolutely love these things! I have a trashpicked Pioneer changer with a 300 disc capacity that works perfectly. My favourite part is it's fully automatic sliding door. I'm now going to ensure the discs are unloaded before moving it because after watching this video, I now know what can happen

    Very helpful info , thanks much! I have 2 300s and one 400. That info on the Blue Switch could be very important when my units fail. The 300 and 400 don't use toothed belts, just simple bands.

    Thx for opening this up... always curious about the guts, but was never going to open it up unless absolutely necessary! I have 2 of the ES version of this player the CX90... they've been rock solid for many years... and no, I've never moved them! :) One nifty feature is that you can chain two of these units together and they act like one 400 disc changer... I use it on random all the time... it's a great way to listen to music that you've purchased so long ago that you'd forgotten and never think of playing... it's like re-discovering your CD collection every time I turn the thing on!

    Yes that is for sure. That is what I do. I took all my CDs, and made compilation disks on CD-R. Took all the good songs from each disk and burned a copy, filled up 80 minute disks. Then loaded all those disks into the changer. I think I am about 190 disks now, not quite full. I leave it play on random and never hear a bad track. What I would really like to do is make a lexan cover for it, so the inner workings can be seen as it is running. I think that would look great. A show piece. I am always on the look out for the 300 or 400 disk changers, but haven't found one yet.

    Thats massive :-), ive never seen a disk changer so big before. Thats so nice how it operates, a top glass would be great as long as it didnt upset the optical sensors :-D It reminds me of the old rockola record dukebox my frend has, the records are on a vertical rotating wheel, i repaired that many years ago. The optical disk sensor was being ignored, it was an old 1970's logic chip in the processing that had bit the dust. So interesting how it all worked, needed a clear panel in it really, amazing :-D

    I think these things are really cool from an engineering standpoint, and are useful for whoever has lots of CD's and needs to play hours and hours of music, and/or has nowhere to store cases. However, I personally would have no use for one because I keep my whole CD collection in original cases on shelves/racks. To me, these mega changers take half the fun of CD collecting away, and it would also be hard to keep track of what's in which slot. I'm happy with my 5-disc carousel, and they are a more reliable technology.

    Yes and it was brand new. The guy that bought it, a local realtor (still here too) bought it new from the shop I worked at. When I was doing some work for him, he was complaining about how hard it was to use to find a specific disk. (I guess he never thought to catalog the disks he loaded) and said how he wished he had a 5 disk carousel unit. I said, hey I have a 5 disk ES model that I recently rebuilt, new laser and spindle motor. He said want to trade, I said hell yes.

    I have the 400 disc CDP-CX450 changer. It's mechanism is rather different, no metal frame over the top under the lid so that's interesting. I have to move the unit I have in order to re-rout unrelated cable so when I do that I will compare the mechanisms... and as you said I will remove the discs before doing so! That's worked for me before.

    Great video. After watching it I found one online and really like it so far. Is there a height adjustment on the chucking arm? When mine goes to chuck a disc, the spindle will sometimes not align with the center hole of the cd. Causes quite the mess if I don't catch it.

  • @Daledooly
    @Daledooly7 жыл бұрын

    Hello, I just finished watching your video on the CX225. I have a CX235 that I recently (3wks ago) purchased. For what ever reason the gripper on the chucking arm closes too soon so when it tries to pick up a disc it either fails to grab it or it barely gets ahold of it causing to load on the spindle incorrectly. When it tries to put it back in the tray it drops the disc half way back and causes a jam. Is there a way I can fix this myself or do I need to send it out for repair? I will appreciate any advise you can give me.

    With the assistance of your video about the 300 Disk CD Mega Changer skipping, I believe I was able to identify the skipping issue on my CDP-CX235 200 Disk changer - the gears (or at least one of them) had some damaged teeth that would sometimes not mesh. I was unable to obtain just the gear(s) that I needed, but was able to find a brand new laser transport sub-assembly for about $15. I installed it. But when I went to test it, my disc chuck would no longer grasp the discs properly, It fails to load the CD as it should. Now, thanks to THIS video, I will attempt to make the adjustment on the CD chuck. Are you able to provide any additional, valuable insight?

One question, the internals and controls on my unit are identical to the sony, the buttons are all in the exact same place, I would think other than the front panel these units are identical. Would a remote for the Sony unit work on my Nakamichi you think? I'm having a hard time tracking down the Nakamichi remote.

I about 380 disks loaded between the 2 of them right now and run them almost every day. That's the way to keep these things working. Use them.

    I have a CDP-CX250 and a CDP-CX300 I bought used. Unfortunately, the CX250 is missing some door parts (latching and unlatching parts) so the door mechanism doesn't work, I have to tape it shut but that is just a minor annoyance because when fully loaded disks are rarely changed. I just changed the belts in the CDP-CX300. I am trying to figure out how to use them to automate copying CDs to computer to use a computer as a jukebox instead.

    great video! i'm a fan of these as i have a huge cd collection, but had no joy with two Sony CDP-CX230: one skips wildly on all cd's, and the other the cd won't even spin. Your video shows it's possible to get to the bottom of the problem. I've had better luck with Pioneer PD-F models, other than sometimes not catching the disc properly they've been fairly reliable and sound fine. I also tried a Kenwood DP-J, that was almost fine except it had problems reading about 1-in-10 discs and also the carousel would randomly whirl about in a confused loop, to the point only powering down several times helped. I even had a JVC XL-MC100 but they're huge and fiddly. Fascinating but frustrating machines. Once you do bag a reliable one you'll rediscover musik in ways which are somehow more enjoyable than mp3-playlists or youtube-streaming. I guess the more involved physical nature helps you psychologically connect more, plus superior audio quality (CD is only matched by WAV in terms of digital audio).

    Great overview! I just got this exact CD changer off eBay in supposed good working condition, and it looks nice from the outside, with no damage during shipping, but when I picked it up I heard rattling inside, so I opened it up and found 5 CDs jammed in the back, as well as a piece inside the chassis that was not attached. It is the magnet-loaded white spindle clamp for spinning chucked CDs! I popped it back on its black grip (it's very loose and wobbly, though - that's not normal, is it?) and loaded a CD and attempted to play it, but every time it tries to chuck a CD, the CD gets tossed and overshoots a little and does not get properly clamped so it cannot play it, and then when it tries to send it back to the carousel, the CD falls and gets caught crooked and gets popped into the back of the player, scratching it in the process. Is there maybe another part missing that I'm not finding, like a plastic/teflon washer that goes between the white spindle and the black spindle holder? Thank you!

  • @12voltvids

    @12voltvids

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes the magnet disk clamp is relatively loose, so that when it clamps it centers and sticks to the spindle.If it is not chucking the disk correctly there are adjustments to align the chucking arm.

If someone asked if I could play the current no 1 (or whatever), I just pressed '1' & it played. The carousel is shrouded so as not to spill in transit. Pioneer did a 25 disc machine with a straight rack & Kenwood did a 200 disc carousel similar to the Sony being demonstrated. Richard (UK)

    I'm getting little rectangular marks/scratches near the outside of my CDs that I believe are coming from this "chucker" as you call it in my Sony CDP-CX240, have you ever seen that happen? Is it possible there's supposed to be some kind of padding on the inside of that thing that grabs the cd out of the carousel? I can send pics if you're interested. Any advice on how I can make sure this doesn't happen? Was thinking of just putting small piece of scotch tape on inside edge of the grabber, but didn't want to gum up the works if all this is super precision. Reminds me of many years ago when I was in the children's hospital and on the TV in the ward, not only did they have the Freeview channels, but they had one channel which was playing episodes of Bob the builder and Barney. After every few episodes, there would be a blue screen which would show like a representation of a container with a large stack of discs in the hundreds of so, which disc it was going to play and sometimes, a blank screen with the "Philips" name, all on a blue background(its OSD appeared to be generated by a character generator). I believe that was a rare Philips VCD changer, which the hospital also used with the TVs in some of their outpatient clinics as well. I never seen the unit itself though.

    yup they were expensive in the day, and quite collectible now. I traded a 5 disk changer for this because the guy that bought it was a dumb ass and didn't know how to work it. The 5 disk I traded for it I had been given. I won't be parting with this one.

    I recently bought a Sony 50 disk changer, similar to this unit. I usually have it playing at random when I have friends over. What kinda bothers me is the amount of time it takes to change a disk, between each song. I was wondering, have there ever been any CD changers that loaded 2 disks at once, so there would be no large pause between the songs?

    You can take two Sony 300 or 400 players and hook them together with a built in connection that allows switching from one player to the other; with either fadeout/fade in, or no delay from song to song.

    The 400 was the highest capacity and yes you could connect 2 together. System would cue up second track and then cross fade between the tracks.

    +12voltvids Thanks. I'll focus on those 2 possibilities. I forgot to mention that it doesn't always skip and someone's it'll pick up a disc w/o problems while other times it'll just keep spinning back and forth, maybe eventually chucking a disc and maybe but, eventually stopping altogether. In short, the behavior seems radical, not consistent.

    Hi again, I finally found and ordered the optical drive for my CD changer but have a question I'm hoping you can answer: Is it necessary to remove the solder on the two contact points of the circuit board before installing it (the solder is supposed to protect from electrical static discharge)? I had a Fisher studio 60 i believe it was. Purchased it new and it seems like at the time you really couldn't get a much larger capacity player. I remember it seemed like soon after i bought this unit that 100-200 disc systems started popping up everywhere. I paid 500 bucks for that Fisher 60 disc. It developed an error after a few years and i think i pitched it sad to say. :(
