Just found one of these today for $35 at Goodwill, fully functional. Year ago found a CX777ES for $15 at a flea market, again no problems. So they're floating around for cheap for the patient.

Thanks 12voltvids! My mega-changer began to act erratic after I removed several discs. It would turn on; make a long noise; carousel would not turn. I also have the CD mega-changer; experienced the same problem. Discovered that it was the belt; accessible from the rear on the CD changer, but, I had to remove the top on the DVD changer to reattach the belt; problem solved. I've owned both since 2006, without any problems. So, I'm glad that I clicked on your video, and decided to to remove the top to have a look!

I recently bought one of these at a Goodwill Outlet, so it was kinda abused when I got it. And ....it didn't work. It would just go around 3 times counter clockwise then read "please wait" forever. I found your video and my problem seemed somewhat similar to yours. But it was late so I took one last look before calling it for the day. I wanted to look at that guide wheel on mine to get an idea of how yours might have come off, cause it seemed rather improbable. I found my guide wheel snugged up against the disc sensor! After restoring it to its rightful place the machine worked fine...clockwise, counter clockwise...found the disc, played it. Thanks for the help.

It does SACD as well - that's pretty cool. I had a Sony 300 disc changer which I sold. They are just so physically huge that sometimes you can't get them into a normal sized shelf.

My CD-400 carousel started rotating endlessly, alternating between faster and slower rotation. I knew nothing but assumed there was an optical sensing system that wasn't working. This video clarifies a lot. However, I am wondering if it might be possible that the sensor under the carousel might be occluded by dirt or debris that might have accumulated over the decades (my unit may date from the 90s) rather than a dimming LED. Unlike a hand held remote, this sensing system is designed to work at a very short, fixed distance. This video provides enough information for me to attempt a repair. I know the video is 6 years old in late 2022, but it is pure gold for me. I have spent hours searching for this info to no avail. Thanks a lot. Hope the cats are alive and well.

Guys like you are getting very hard to come by!! Any chance you are near Tampa Bay?? lol.. I have 2 AVR's I'd love to fix. An old Carver that my daughter smoked on me while I was out and a Harman Kardon that won't power up. The Carver is from the mid 80s and was really clean sound and the HK was ok to pretty good. I just bought a SONY AVR and 400 disc player. The receiver sounds like crap with my HK speakers and the 400 disc player needs all the belts. They were both NIB, but stored for many years. One of the easily seen belts was melted into the larger pulley and the other had just snapped. The door won't open on it's own, so I'm betting it's also toast.. I think I'll check the rollers as well since the belts look melted. The plastic wheel retainers are possibly junk as well.. My old 6-pack magazine CD player was my favorite for decades, but it bit the dust a few years back and it broke my heard.. Now it's hard to find anything with Spotify and others killing the market.. I won't use them. It is not a PLUS for the common man. Just another money sucking deal from those with money pushing us to want more of their crap and pay for it.

Fascinating watching you fixing these items,. Have Sony 300 Disc player running on 110V ac system (Canada). I ran it on 230/40 ac system using a transformer here in Malta and worked perfectly for many years. Mistakenly I plugged it in a 230/40 wall receptacle and it went dead. Looked like the CD changers own transformer obviously burnt out. Can`t use anymore . Wish I can find new transformer to replace the bunt one but I live in Malta and it is impossible here to find anyone that can fix my unit.

I have this same model that I got a year ago on Ebay. 2 weeks ago I started to have a problem whereby the disc will load, the menu will display on the TV screen, but when I go to select an episode or movie, it stalls out, then rotates to the next disc. At first it was intermittent, now it does it all the time. Mechanically the loading mechanisms all seem ok, but no video will play . Cats are a pain in the ass some times. One climbed up on the top shelf and knocked box that contained 5 Sony lavaliere microphones I had up for sale down, breaking 2 of the plastic storage boxes. Most of the stuff I get in I try to sell off after repair, at least the stuff that is worth money. For example the 16mm projector that was featured a week or so ago should be out the door this weekend. That giant 32" Sony tube TV that had the bad degauss thermistor. Yup found a home for that one too. Looking for a home for the VP2000 3/4" player. Someone will take it eventually. All this old stuff gets a new home eventually. Much of it I just give away as I need the space.

I doubt they are damaged, just the storage boxes, the catch that holds 2 of them closed snapped off, so the box will need to be held closed with a rubber band. Reduces the value a little. Have no idea what I am going to sell them for anyway. Have to do research and see what they have been going for.

Im supprised it managed to select a disk at all, that sensor seems to be the only thing telling the unit absolute slot position, Im amazed it works so well. The disk waving procedure seems a bit odd, i would of expected a smooth rotation of the whole wheel and where the two sensors blip would be a disk. But its ok now, so back it goes :-( :-(. Needs deeper feet, thats the reason for the caster pop out.

The replaced LED didn't seem much brighter than the original (though obviously it was enough to make it work again), couldn't it just be dust build up on the photo detector? I had a similar problem on a VCR that wouldn't stop when the clear leader past the sensor all it needed was a cleanup as it was "blinded" by the dust.

As an early subscriber I watched a lot of your video's. I enjoy them a lot. Of course I noticed you're using a Variac. You once mentioned in another video that it was a safety precaution, But are you aware a Variac is not an isolation transformer? It is an auto transformer with just a single winding. Basically it is a big, high current wirewound potentiometer. Using a Variac you are by no means isolated from mains power!

  • @DrCassette

Duh. My variac is there only for voltage control, so if I get an intermittent I can vary the input voltage to see if it is a regulation fault. The variac is plugged into a 800 watt isolation transformer that is mounted under the bench. The isolation transformer comes on when I turn on my bench power, and the switch on the variac I use to control a separate power bar that I can set the voltage. If you watch the video test bench safety, you will see the isolation transformer.

If you move the units full of discs bad things happen. These 3 were rattling around inside. That's why the top was already removed before the video starts, because I had to remove the loose discs before plugging in or I would have been picking pieces of broken discs out. And yes I did see that happen.

Can I run something by you? This unit just arrived to me and the issue is press power button, it turns on, but then shuts off a couple seconds later. Service manual says to check voltages on main connector on power supply. I'm getting correct voltages on every pin except one - I'm supposed to get 3.3v, I only get 1.8v. Traced it back to IC401 (a tiny regulator on the backside of the power supply board). Input pin voltages are fine, but one pin on the output is, as you guessed, only putting out 1.8v where it is spec'd for 3.3v. Do you think this is probably the reason for the shut down?

  • @12voltvids

    @12voltvids

Its either the regulator is bad, or something is loading it down. Does it get hot?If so I would suspect that something is loading it down, if not then the regulator itself is probably bad.If you look at my TASCAM DA40 repair that is what was wrong with it. It would turn on and come up with MECHA COMM ERR, and it was a bad 5 volt regulator that was at fault.

So, I installed the new regulator and checked all voltages on the socket and all were perfect. I'm getting my 3.3v on pin 11, so I reinstalled the power supply and fired it up. It came to life and for the first time, the display said "Sony DVD" (which it wasn't doing before). Stayed on for about 5 seconds and the shut itself off again. GRRRRRRRR!!!!!! That's probably as far as I can take this. If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it, or if you have any hankerings to have a look at it for a video, I could ship it off to you. Thanks.

I have plenty of power. There are 2 on the bench, one on each side and a power bar plugged into each side. This is a dedicated circuit. No chance of overloading. In the garage there is actually 2 dedicated 240 plugs for the 2 electric car charge cords and 2 circuits for the bench plugs and another for the lights.

I have a CDP M555ES 400 disc changer that operates perfectly for 20 to 40 minutes but then it gets stuck when it attempts to change to the next disc. On the display it keeps scrolling through the disc numbers, but the carousel is not turning. This continues until I turn the unit off. I can turn it back on and it will operate perfectly for 15 to 30 minutes when it again gets stuck. Do you have a solution for this? Thanks in advance for any help.

some codes are in the manuals for the 985 amd 995. C 32 The front cover automatically opens and the player enters standby mode. ,Check that there is nothing wrong inside the rotary table, such as a fallen disc. After you have checked the inside of the rotary table and resolved any possible problems, press PLAY.

That error is for the wheels the carousel spins on. You can see the white posts for the three wheels from the bottom of the unit. A post might not be locked in place. I have seen another video where they will just glue the foot back in its correct placing instead of taking the unit that far apart. good luck.

Hi there we have 400 disc sony changer in for repair slightly different fault where by if you no disc's in it the carousel will constantly go through all 400 locations and load at every single disc location and do this until you power off it would seem the machine thinks it has 400 disc's in and yet there is not one in it all. I think the sensor that detects there is a disc in each slot as it goes by is sending out a high output telling the machine disc's are present.

  • @12voltvids

How they typically work is a China infrared light beam into the edge of the disc and there's a photo transistor on the opposite side and as the disc goes past it detects the pulse of light passing through the disc. So straight light that's able to reach the sensor can cause this problem. Typically the vitamining dial that shoots the light beam out does not point directly at the sensor but points at an angle so that light gets refracted through the disc itself but if there's no disc in place the beam from the emitter doesn't reach the detector

@@robertedmead3684 the location is detected through an encoder ring on the bottom of the carousel it has little slots that are varying with that it can read as the disc carousel is spinning so that the microcontroller knows what position it's in so when you spin it to disc 25 it knows where 25 is because it reads from the bottom almost like reading a barcode if you were to pull the carousel out you see it what look like little little teeth sticking down which interact with an optical sensor so as it's turning it knows where it is and each number is not indexed individually what it is is there's one that has a larger space and then the rest of them are all equally spaced little notches so when it starts out it makes that first initial rotation until it hits that first marker which tells it this is position number one and then it can rotate either direction and it counts the pulses so that's completely different than the disc in indicator which is a little LED that's typically on the left side that kind of shines into the disc at an angle and then there's a detector below it that detects when there's a disc in place and it works by refraction when the light enters the edge of the disc it reflects down just like if you were to take a an LED and shine it on the edge of a disc that the actual circumference of the disc with eliminate that's how it works it shines a light into the edge of the disc and then it's able to detect the light being refracted in the disc but if there's no disc there the light never reaches the detector so if something's causing a reflection or if the angle of the emitter is pointing say too low and it's able to pick up a reflection from something else it might count it as if there's a disc there when there's not but typically if it's detecting that there's discs in place and there's not it's because it's picking up a reflection from something if the LED were to fail completely the detector would not see any light and it would just make the one revolution and then say no disc
