    I have a Sony shelf stereo with a five disc CD carousel. It would play, but then begin skipping and even stopping. The problem turned out to be bad solder for a servo IC for the optics in the CD player circuit. Reflowed the joints and it's been working like a champ ever since.

    300 Cds with 12 tracks comes out to 3600 individual entries not including the album title & artist... Even with the help of a keyboard that's still quite an endeavor to enter all that info which can be lost if the unit is un-plugged from mains for more than a week. I've always wondered why they couldn't have included a memory backup battery like a CR2032 or something...

The fingers pick up the disc, but just as the mechanism clamps down on the disc, the disc drops a bit, so that sometimes it does not load properly. Then it jams. Can you maybe do a video on all the adjusts that the player has

    My Sony single disc player from the 80's (the first one I bought) can take up to 10 minutes now to play a disc when I hit play. Sometimes it goes right away. Sometimes a couple minutes and sometimes several minutes. Once it plays it plays fine and all the way through without skipping. These are regular cds. I don't even try to play cdrs in it because it's an early cd player. I have it set up for nostalgic reasons. I just want to keep it operational if I can. Any idea what could be the problem?

    I have an issue with my Sony CDP-CX53 50+1 CD player, where the disc starts playing, but after 30 seconds to a minute, there is a high pitched whining coming from the lazer area, and then a static noise increasingly comes out of the speakers and stops the disc entirely, and tries to switch to another disc, but doesn't even recognize it. Any ideas? I have been troubleshooting for days now

    Hey, THANKS for posting this. I just replaced optical pickup on my 400cd unit. And while it's not a rocket science assembling that metal holder-cage is a bear, at least in my case. :) While these units are cool sound quality from d/a leaves MUCH to be desired, but you can always use external dac. I always wondered what's the difference between "standard" and ES models of these? Does anyone know? Also these transport mechanisms are getting extremely hard to come by. Thanks again for posting the vid! big help. cheers!

  • @12voltvids

    There is an adjustment screw that sets the position where the gripper arm goes. If it's the wrong slot I would suspect either a dirty encoder switch (blue lever switch activated by the main cam) or a bad optical encoder. Also don't overlook the main door switch. If that gets dirty all kinds of strange things happen

    There is a dirty little secret about "high end" DAC. These high end DAC require an exceptionally jitter free bit stream as they have little to no error correction. Lower end units are much more forgiving to jitter. So if you waste your money on a high end DAC you will waste even more money on a precision transport.

    @@12voltvids Hey Dave I've taken some of those drive motors apart and I found a ring (I guess a resistor ring) to reduce the spark noise that brushed DC motors make from the brush/commentator. They do produce extra load (current) on the drive IC. The commentator can get a build up in the splits and cause excessive current draw too. It is likely it has happened with a machine with that many hours (the resistor ring) adds even more load to the drive IC. Those motors are tricky to get into so be warned if you decide to try cleaning it that maybe the only option if you can't source one. I encountered an Awia that wouldn't read TOC on any disc and discovered the sled motor wasn't moving it wasn't stuck and moved freely, it was indeed a case of this resistance ring inside the motor I successfully took it out and the motor moves as it should now, this ring likely weakened the drive chip and it just couldn't provide enough current to move the motor anymore, anyway it doesn't have any problems after I removed the ring whatever it is/does.

    @@12voltvids Yes indeed I've done plumbing work before and I learned a long time ago don't put plastic (PVC) over metal pipe threads the plastic will crack eventually. The plastic expands and contracts more than the metal which in the contraction causes the PVC to split EVERY TIME. I wonder if that's the same reason or at least a possibility plastic gears crack on motor shafts a lot in situations like that. I've also seen this in large gears with brass centers the plastic gear split on the brass center, anyway just my observation. I have some portable boomboxes that had the same traverse CD mechanism in that Yamaha CD player you worked on they were popular in a lot of portable CD boomboxes as I think that's all that existed when they 1st came out, so Sanyo made and sold a lot of them to various manufacturers of boomboxes and home CD players. Sony made there own laser pickups too. I just don't know who did it 1st or if they were introduced at the same time. Anyway I learned whatever the cause of split plastic its NEVER a good outcome when plastic is encased around something metal.

    This is going to sound like a strange question but here goes: in the 90’s, we (my mom and myself) needed some electrical work done in our apartment. The maintenance guy did the job….but blew the fuse box, which apparently sent a spike through the apartment. After the smell of fried wiring dissipated, I tried playing my Sony 5 disc changer (can’t recall the model right now, it’s been 30someodd years since it happened), and - this ONLY happened in the disc two spot - it would start acting like the disc was defective. (It would start “sputtering” the audio tracks something terrible) Why would that happen on only that slot and not the others?

    Interesting failure in the end. Now that winter is approaching, it reminds my that my car cd player tends to act up in really cold temperatures, i wonder if it could be coused by condensation on the lens or what? Hi, I recently bought one of these players on ebay. I cleared the memory but unfortunately it seems to assume that it is still loaded with all 300 CDs, which is not the case. It doesn't check if there are any discs like on 1:14 . It just goes to a random slot and tries to load a CD (which is not there). Of course the laser can't detect no CD, so it puts it back in the carousel but then tries to load it again. After 2-3 attempts it spins to the next slot and does the exact same thing until it finally reaches a slot which contains a CD. Do you know this kind of issue and could you help me with that?

  • @12voltvids

    @12voltvids

    Might be the disk detection sensor. That's the one on the left side. When there is a dual present light shines up through the disk and is detected. No disk and it sees no light. There is another one below the disk carrosel. Normally if there are no discs installed and the turntable spins the detector won't see any light because the light is shining one direction from where the detector is pointed. Only when there's a disc in the slot light will conduct through the desk and will be detected by the sensor. If the sensor is out of position however it is able to detect the light from the emitter as the carousel rotates it will detect flashes of light just like it would if there was a disk installed and the player will detect a disc and attempt to load it. You really need a scope to check this out. You need to scope the output from the photo transistor as the carousel rotates. There should be no pulses of light detected unless there's a disc in place. I've seen this happen when people have tried to fix their own machine and they first say anything is that the sensor isn't any good and they take it apart or adjusted. it's quite a critical adjustment because if it's set to the wrong angle it will detect a desk being present that's actually not there. I made that mistake very early in my career working on I think it was a 50 disc changer at the time. Had to reset it according to the service manual
