Sony a6000 kit lens review. Is the 16-50mm really that bad?

Ғылым және технология

Check out my new preset system that I used to edit the photos in this video! It works great for both RAW files from cameras and JPGS from phones. See how it works here: www.azvisuals.com/store

The sony 16-50mm kit lens comes with the a6000, along with most of their other APSC cameras. It has a bad rep for producing soft blurry images. So I decided to test and review it, so you can see what it's capable of and decide for yourself!

This lens is definitely under appreciated! I've seen some amazing photos taken with this lens, and captured a few myself. It's definitely a good lens to start with if you're just getting started in photography vs blowing cash on a expensive lens and you haven't figured how to use your camera or what type of photography you want to dive into. Just remember, buying all the expensive gear doesn't make you a better photographer, learning to master the current tools you have will.

Great review! This helps clear up some of my questions on this lens. I don't know much about photography, but I do want to invest in a nicer camera. The Sony A6400 comes with either a 16-50 lens, or a 18-135 lens. I'll only be recording DIY videos in my garage. Hey thanks for watching. I think if you are starting out, the 16-50 should be fine. Especially if the space is tight, the 16 will give you more content vs the 18. And most importantly if your garage is dim, invest in some good lighting because thats really what makes the most difference. Check out my other videos about lighting to get an idea!

The functionality is what makes this lens. I now have the 17-70 Tamron and I laugh every time I see a KZread review calling the Tamron light and compact. The electronic zoom on the Sony allows for remote zooms and zooming with a gimbal button. The chief problem with the Sony is the aperture range which limits use to bright environments.

Meike 35mm f/1.4 Another pancake lens, albeit dirt cheap, manual, and made-in-China. It gives you a 50mm-equivalent field-of-view on a Full Frame camera. Learn to manual focus (and zone focus) like the old masters. Plus the a6000’s focus peaking and zoom focusing makes light work of it. Wee Gee was quoted to have said, “f/8 and be there.” The APSC cropped equivalent is f/5. Good for street photography.

People who can't shoot or knows nothing about photography will tell you automatically "kit lens suck". This lens is by far the best lens to shoot and is extremely clearer than the canon 50mm. The kit lens are PERFECT editorial full frame adapted lens to use. but this 16-50 I shoot food photography and you wouldn't know if i shot with a Sigma or not. Also FYI, no lens hood will prevent flares and glares from a direct point to the sun, it happens on all lens no matter the brand unless you are getting one of those $20,000 lenses. Now hence don't get me twisted, I wouldn't pay for it, I would get a Sigma or so. But for a lens to shoot some basic photography, this is the perfect lens to use. Understand people just because it's a lens that came with the camera, that don't automatically mean "it sucks because" master what you have now and get good at it THEN upgrade. Get off auto and you'll see the lens is hella great

The lens is ok for video. You can actually zoom pretty steadily due to the power zoom feature. But the AF ring is loose and hard to control if you want to pull focus. Of course, the a6000 is not great for video. A newer camera that supports 4K would be better.

As a starter lens, the Sony 16-50mm is an enigma that asks you, “what kind of photography are you into?” No one can answer that but yourself. It is a general purpose lens, where the sweet spots are generally limited to f/5.6, f/8 to f/11. (Not forgetting the Sunny 16 rule.) When you start to take notes of what the lens can’t do, it actually points you into what direction of photography and appropriate lens you should get. I imagine every beginner’s second lens would be a prime as a knee jerk reaction to the kit lens’ shortcomings (I know I did).

Kit-lens apologist here. You can learn about the Sony 16-50mm sweet spots and what it can do over here : braddlesphotoblurb.blogspot.com/2016/11/how-to-get-best-out-of-sony-16-50-oss.html Pro tip : shoot in DMF focusing mode, or set a custom key for AF/MF focusing. The lens has problems with micro-contrast so you’d need to focus manually to fine-tune for sharpness.
