Sony a5100 vs a5000 - Video Comparison, Clean hdmi Fix INITIATED, Skin Smoothing DELETED, and More!

Ойын-сауық

With everybody and their grandma getting into video these days.., camera gear is important. eBay has been picked clean of the awesome Sony a5100, but can the a5000 hold its own?
In a word.., Yes!
Anyway.., I'm a cartoonist, not a camera guy, but nobody had ever put together a direct video comparison of these two important cameras, so I figured.., why not do it myself?

Nice video, i liked the calm way you described what you were doing and seeing. Usually these tec videos are screamy and jump on you like mad . But I am surprised you did not notice (or did not mention) the visible latency difference between the cheap capture stick and the avermedia. Especially if someone wants to Do live video conferencing this leads to his audio (coming from a microphon or Headset) to be out of sync with the video from the camera.

I didn't notice that! Syncing is one of the main bugaboos with these cards. -OBS allows you to micro-manage delay offsets. That Avermedia card needs the user to put a 300 millisecond delay on the audio in order to line up. I didn't even think to try to adjust the cheap card correctly. Nice catch!

It occurs to me that the differences between the two cameras had more to do with the old FD lenses I had mounted on them than the cameras themselves. The lenses were both made by Canon more than 20 years ago, but one was even older than the other and its glass is of a different quality. Maybe because of that, I think the a5000 performed better in a few areas than its big brother in these tests.

Thanks. I love my secondhand a5000. It's cheap and I've learned a lot about cameras using this crappy camera. And yes definitely a5100 looks better. I guess we can't ignore huge 4million pixel difference. But a5000 is still holding up good enough for youtube videos.

I’m not the sharpest tool in the box so….. I want to know if I order the SonyA5000 will it be good quality for streaming & KZread or is the A5100 worth it for quality? I already have the ElGato Cam link purchased, just want high quality but best price like most. Also the key thing that worried me was the part were you say the A500 displays the battery life & things & needs fixing to get rid of, is that a hard process?? As it’s making lean towards the A5100

The a5100 is a better camera and personally, I think it's worth the extra if you can afford it. Though, realistically, most people won't be able to tell the difference. You have to pixel-peek to notice where the a5100 is stronger. Things like on my mic, there's a metal grill made out of criss-crossing wire mesh, and on the a5100, you can see it as it really is. On the a5000, however, it depending on the distance away from the lens, it creates an interference pattern due to some kind anti-aliasing effect. That might be where regular people would notice a difference. Otherwise, the difference is very slight. In the menu, you get a few more options on the a5100 and a more powerful color control with smaller divisions between gradients you can select, allowing you to get closer to the colors you are after. Also, the a5000 does need the clean HDMI hack run, (see the link in my description; I did a whole tutorial about how to do it).

  • @MarkOakleyComics

The face-smoothing thing is an irritation which may one day be solved. In the mean time, the digital zoom is activated by a convenient left/right rocker switch on the camera next to the shutter button.

I had a5100 in terrible condition. Sold it and kit lens and bought 2 a5000 in mint condition and one had nice lens with it. A5100 is really not worth that price difference. I wonder why they are so much more expensive? It is 90% same features.

While it's great that everybody is letting everyone know about these cameras, they've driven the prices up to rediculous levels. The a5000 retailed for like $600 with a lens. 🙄

I just found out that the digital zoom fix doesn't work when using kit lenses on a5000 and a5100, they wont allow a digital zoom until you fully zoom out optically first is not usable. I found a better fix though u may already know but if you turn off face detect (keep auto focus on though) as well as turn off soft skin in settings and together they will remain off while keeping the camera zoomed normally.

Set the camera to the movie mode and alter the settings for video, (one of which is the FPS). For some reason, using the HDMI output in any of the other still photography modes results in poor video quality.

When recording to an SD card, there is a half hour time limit, (which I believe can be removed with a hack). It also overheats after 10-20 minutes and will automatically shut down. However, when recording direct to hard drive over HDMI, they never shut down. I use a dummy battery for wall socket power, and just used one to record a 2 hour interview today. Worked fine.
