Sony a5000 - How to get CLEAN HDMI out - The Step by Step hack - For Streamers and Zoom users.

Ойын-сауық

This is my tutorial for getting clean HDMI out of your Sony a5000.
I'm just a script-kiddie, employing the smarts and hard work of other people. This was apparently not the work of one person, but a group effort over on a github forum. You can skip the coffee part. (Sorry guys! I didn't research the origins of this hack deeply enough and attributed it to one person.)

Good question! I mostly run on fixed primes, but on occasion I would install the 16-50mm kit lens and it worked as expected on hdmi, but I didn't do a lot of extensive shooting with it. If there are any finicky AF issues, I might not have noticed them. -Though, one issue I can report with confidence is that the a5000 and a5100 employ an (annoying) 'skin smoothing' feature which can't be turned off when you're using AF. It's one of the reasons I switched to primes, where you can control for that (by digitally zooming 1%).

Hi Mark, I was just wondering if u could do a "clean hdmi from 5100 vs nex 6" video as there clearly was a performance bump in the 5000 to 5100 but as of yet there is no info on whether its better to pick up a (lower priced) nex 6 as opposed to a 5100. It would also be interesting to know the compared IQ, resolution, fps and also whether the skin smoothing is gone. Im just about to buy a camera for the D&D games I want to stream/record and it would be great to be a bit more informed. Thanks for your work, Jácint

  • @MarkOakleyComics

    2 жыл бұрын

Well.., I don't own an NEX 6, so I can't do a direct comparison. But here's what I can tell you based on what I know about it... The a5100 has clean hdmi as a built-in option, so you wouldn't need to worry about that. The NEX 6 doesn't. (I can't remember if anybody got this hack to work on it; if they did you might see somebody mention it somewhere in the comments.) The Sony a5100 has 24 megapixels, while the NEX 6 has only 16. The Sony a5100 is newer by a year and a half. That can mean a lot in terms of sensor tech. It did between the a5100 and the a5000, and there were only a few months difference there. And the NEX 6 is even older! For the time being the a5100 is the best of the cheap video cameras (for fixed position studio shooting) you can get in my opinion. Anything better is considerably more expensive with imperceptible quality gain, and anything worse may be cheaper but you can definitely see the quality decrease. I tried the a5000 in my multi-cam studio, and pulled it after just a few live tests. Even though I think it's a great camera for the price, I could tell the difference. I'd use it in a pinch, but wouldn't touch anything older than it. I hope some that was helpful! -Cheers!

@@Willisaga That phone footage looks pretty good to me. I think you could stick with that, no problem. The a5000 might be a little better; phones do a lot of clever compression and it sometimes becomes noticeable, but honestly, I think your video quality looks fine. For you, the big benefit of a mirrorless camera like the a5000 over a phone would be that you can swap out lenses and get cool separation effects, where you are in sharp focus, but the background is blurred out a bit. I think it's a cool look and you can't fake it with a phone, (not well, anyhow), but it's definitely next level in terms of $$. The wisdom is, "The best camera is the one you have." There are some excellent channels which use the cheapest gear. People watch because of the ideas and the personality, not the image quality.

With these low-end Sony cameras? Ha ha. Nope! -You're stuck with the built-in camera mics -which are actually pretty good compared to other cameras, but they're still a long way off from what a high quality mic can provide. Getting good sound can be expensive. What I have is a Behringer UMC202HD interface which allows you to plug in whatever pro-level XLR mic you want. -I run the camera and the mic through Open Broadcast Studio (OBS), which allows you to save streams to your hard drive. It's a very powerful, open source piece of software that pretty much everybody uses. But you can get a reasonably good stream quality with low-end gear. Some of my favorite KZread personalities use the cheapest junk gear, but I tune in for their words and personalities.

You're in luck! -That's a super easy fix. Just make sure the camera is in "Movie" mode rather than any of the photography modes. Your output image will suddenly look like it recovered from leprosy. I think (think) the reason is that since the HDMI is just outputting the flip screen data to your computer, in photography mode, the image quality is determined by your still image settings rather than auto-optimizing for video. Anyway, it makes all the difference. Cheers!

The only A5000 I had problems with, was one that had never had its firmware updated (version 1.0). So I'd recommend updating to the latest firmware as this will clear any firmware related issues. Also I personally use a dummy battery and either an external NPF-style battery (the lowest capacity version gives over 3 hours of life), or a converter with USB-C equipped power pack (needs to be Power Delivery compatible, which means USB-C only). Removing battery from the unit helps keep temperature down. I've also seen advice that the screen should be lifted away from the body, but I doubt this contributes much to overheating. Hm. Well.., it might be just WiFi being difficult. Maybe try repositioning the camera so it is closer to your router. You can also try turning off your firewall. You also need to have telnet turned on in Windows. There are lots of bits of advice and useful observation scattered throughout the comments by others who managed to get things working. Take a look through those and see if anything helps. Also.., maybe try using Putty; some people got that working. It can be frustrating; there's a lot of potential places for things to fail; it took me a few tries to get things going, but don't give up hope. Just keep trying different things and looking through help forums for getting devices to connect. Good luck!

Yes there is. Under Custom settings (the gear), choose a Peaking level and peaking colour (color). I think this only works in manual focus mode but may be wrong. Of course you will be forced to use peaking ONLY on the camera's little screen if you enable clean HDMI out. This little camera is absolutely amazing for what it can do when set up correctly.

It's only purpose is to connect to the camera over the USB cable. -If you got the same message on the camera that I did, (at 9:23) then you have a successful connection between the computer and the camera over USB. -Next, I ran pmca-gui, and I got the same message as you! -"Cannot connect to remote server, falling back to appstore repository" I clicked the "Get camera info" button and it sent back all the camera data from the a5000, so that shows it's connected and USB is working. Yeah, some of the power supplies with my dummy batteries, I've noticed, don't provide the amperage a battery does. For instance, a cold startup when an HDMI cable running from my capture device is plugged into the camera, results in a brief lighting of the flip screen, and then a shutdown. -I have to turn on the camera, get over the power draw spike, and *then* plug in any extra cables. Once it's all going, it works fine, but it's definitely an issue. I don't experience that with all my power supplies, which indicates that they don't all have the same specs. I'd say, based on that, that it's probably best use a fully charged battery when performing this kind of operation.
