Sonny & Cher on Letterman, November 13, 1987 (full show, stereo) + 2015
One of the top shows in Late Night's 11 1/2-year run, presented in full here and in stereo. First preceded by Dave promoting the appearance the night before and then Bill Wendell's pre-announce. From the repeat of October 8, 1988. (There were two LNs broadcast this night, the first a new show that aired in Carson's slot at 11:30 PM -- the Tonight Show's 26th Anniversary special had aired earlier in prime time -- and then this repeat at 12:30 am.)
Accompanying Cher with her performance of "I Found Someone" and then later with Sonny were John McCurry on second guitar, vocalist Pattie Darcy, and, on synthesizer, Cliff Carter, who was part of the 24th Street Band with Will Lee, Hiram Bullock, and Steve Jordan in the late '70s to early '80s, a band whose second LP in 1980 was produced by Paul Shaffer.
This same ensemble would accompany Cher on SNL a week later on November 21.
That same week later, on November 20, Dave shows a photo that had been taken during the break after Cher's performance.
And, finally, a clip from May 6, 2015, as Cher appears for the final time on Dave's Late Show, here in the same jacket worn 28 years earlier.
With Jeff Martin as Flunky and Gerard Mulligan getting fired again.

I saw this when it aired, and on a whim, just re-watched it. And I wasn't really expecting the whole thing to hit so hard in the feels. The significance of this little cultural milestone and the authenticity and decency of all involved was what I found the most striking. Back in the day, I would shake my head, roll my eyes and maybe feign gagging myself when older folks would get emotional about something in the past, and say things like "where did the time go?" So. Here I am. 2024. And it absolutely *_blows my mind_* to try to comprehend the _instantaneous_ passage of multiple decades since this aired. I feel like a time traveler, a lost one at that, having unfortunately emerged in to some bizarre, future parallel time line. If you are mid-20s _now_ like I was _then,_ rolling your eyes at all the ancient nostalgic coots, then *mark my words:* Tomorrow morning you will wake up and find that somewhere between three and four decades will have passed. _Overnight._ I doubt you believe me, but seriously, tomorrow morning you'll find yourself in the year 2059, and realize that you're staring 60 years old straight on in just a few weeks. And you won't have the *_tiniest clue_* as to how or why that giant chunk of time passed in a single night. So my advice is to cherish today. _PS: RIP Sonny, I had no idea you were such a sweet guy. And Cher? I had no idea you are so damn likeable!_
This really was one of Dave's best shows. It was sentimental and awkward and nostalgic and sweet. Sonny and Cher sounded great together. You could see they still had that magic. Glad they got to sing as Sonny and Cher one last time. Thanks Dave!

Cher's eulogy for Sonny at his funeral left no dry eyes for anyone that watched. They loved each other just couldn't live with each other. I loved Sonny and Cher when I was a kid in the 70s.
I met Sonny just after he became mayor. It was in San Diego and it was a small meet, just four of us. I'll never forget how genuinely nice he was.
I watched this live back in 1987, I waited all day for it as I loved Cher’s remake of “I Found Someone” I had the VCR all cued up, blank tape ready to go. I was blown away with her performance and then watching her and Sonny reunite for “I Got You Babe” had me in tears. Now watching it again in 2023 takes me right back like I never missed a beat. Even after their divorce they remained very close. Cher gave the eulogy at his funeral. He really helped her become the Cher we have today. He saw SUPERSTAR in her from the start. RIP Sonny Bono. I'm so glad I saw this when it first aired. When performed together, on Late Night With David Letterman , I cried. It was so moving and sweet. You could feel their love for each other and the respect. Best Late Night episode ever! Also the way she honors him in her live concerts, by doing a duet of this song with him, using clips of him singing his part, and she faces him and it's crazy how you still feel their connection like he's on that stage with her. Best part of her live show.

One of the greatest Letterman episodes ever. Dave is giddy, and Paul seems to be reluctant about the whole chance of them singing together. And when Sonny says "I'll sing with Cher anytime" you knew the magic was about to happen.

They obviously have something very special between them that defies explanation. Everything that could be said at Sonny's funeral speaks volumes how they felt about each other. This is a classic moment. Cher was so devastated at his funeral u dont have that kind of reaction of u dont still love someone. I think cher was very young he was like svengali they called him " il primo" so he was just the boss & cher matured & wanted to be free. Cher said sonny was shaking during this can u imagine the memories that must have come back . U can see how cher got so excited talking about the old days . This was really sweet. Wow

You've got the point: she matured and wanted freedom, couldn't agree more.

It looked like Sonny went through so many emotions the entire time. And he had to hold it together emotionally at the end of their singing together.
They might not have been able to stay married but you can clearly see the love is still there between them. Cher was so devastated when Sonny died.

yeah, taking over the funeral when he had an actual grieving wife there. Personally I think Cher had regrets and guilt and that's why she was that sad when he died. He made her famous after all.

This is my first time (10/31/2023) watching Sonny and Cher on Letterman. It's hard to feel bad for not knowing about this show because of how good it is to watch. It's awesome to watch them sing again! Such a great, great episode!
I koved that they seemed happy and surprised that they still sang so well together. They just dropped into their iconic slots with no effort. Cher was uneasy at first that they hadnt rehearsed. They didn't need to! ❤

Things done spontaneously are always the best b/c they're genuine.
You know, I wasn't alive to witness these two as a duo, but the chemistry and energy is just beautiful between these two. Honestly puts a lump in my throat. Sonny seems like he was such a good guy, a shame he had to go so early.
The speed of the passing of time is unbelievable, sometimes you hardly notice it, then you see something like this, and you think "how fast did that all go?"

Your story about your Mom touched my heart. I am a caregiver that works w/dementia clients. Your Mom went back in time & “saw” her husband in you at that approximate age. Letting you know that she always loved your father! It is amazing the insights they come up with. Namaste, Pat
I grew up watching the Sonny and Cher show every week. To see every thing that happened over the years that lead to these classic moments in time. . I was tearing up right along with them. RIP Sonny.
I am so in love with all of this! Cher is such a unique human! Her energy is intoxicating. Sonny and Cher’s relationship is so beautiful you can feel the connection and love despite not being together anymore. Ugh lllllloooooovvvvveeee it.
It's always mentioned Sonny getting emotional on this Letterman show, but it's all in Cher voice as she's singing their iconic song, her voice gets deep and emotional as she sings in this last clip of the both of them.
This may be the greatest single show Dave ever hosted....and that is saying a lot. There were a ton of great ones, but this one is epic. It is almost as if the rest of the shows had been leading up to this in a way.

No one can ever compare to your first love. The love you built with your first is incomparable with any other love there forward. It may not have worked out between them, but they never stopped loving each other. Seeing Sonny cry after singing with Cher made me emotional, and then to see David getting emotional with his reunion with Cher at the end of his show got me teary eyes too. She also wore the same jacket on, too, which i thought was really sweet. 😢😢😢
I remember watching this when it first aired. I was 18 years old and I couldn’t stop smiling and clapping. I watched their show when I was a kid. I’m still sad we lost Sonny too young.
Cher never gets credit for being a great vocalist. She is a one of kind original.

This seems like the right place to tell this little story. My coworkers and I were discussing our favorite artists and my 30 year coworker told me how much he loves Cher. Then my 60 year old coworker and I started talking about Sonny and Cher when the 30 year old breaks in with ...."who's Sonny???" Our mouths just hung open for a minute! Time goes by so fast!!!
Wow what a sweet man Sonny was ! You could tell he loved her so and she loved him that’s so so sweet ! He was so emotional for him but it was tough for me to watch. Love and miss ya sonny love you to Cher !!

Have seen this before and also saw it when it actually happened and I never noticed til now that at 41:25, the end of the song, Sonny starts to cry... Broke my heart...! ❤
It’s the way he physically took her hand in his and then blushed like a nervous little school boy does before his first kiss, for me.
I almost cried - love how they had separate lives, but came together to do this!
