Hey ladies and gents! In celebration of Sonic 3k's 20th anniversary, we thought we'd show you a prototype from our personal vaults that we developed early this year. Please note that this video is being presented for entertainment / portfolio purposes only, and is by no means official or indicative of any official Sega release. No further development is currently planned, nor is any build available to public.

If Sonic 3 and Knuckles doesn't get released by Sonic's 25th anniversary, I'm done. It would be the perfect thing for the 25th anniversary of Sonic, since it is one of his best games. Edit (circa 2016): Well, Mania was great, but we can still hope Sega green lights this soon. It's too good to pass up. And... no, I'm not actually "done". Because... Mania. Edit 2 (circa 2021): Finally, Sonic Origins...

It's been over three years since this video was uploaded. It's been quite a ride since then. The excellent Sonic Mania has come and gone. However, we still don't have an official remaster of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which is so frustrating :(

If you don’t know, the remaster can’t come out because of legal reasons. Sonic the hedgehog 3 and Knuckles’ music was made with the help of Michael Jackson. However, he didn’t like how his songs sounded then, so he left and the music was changed up a bit because... well I’m not going to say but since Sega doesn’t really own the rights to the music (even if the music was changed), they can’t use the music.

While it's most widely accepted that copyright stuff regarding Michael Jackson is the reason the game is ignored by SEGA most of the time, it actually has to do with Brad Buxer and the song Hard Times which he used for Ice Cap Zone. Hard Times wasn't written by Buxer and the rights to it actually belong to a different member of the band he was in, meaning Buxer essentially stole the song for Sonic 3.

Sonic 3 A.I.R = Widescreen, HD, Consistent 60FPS, Achievement System and much more. Both of which contains exclusives on it's own so it really depends on which suits you the most. For me it'll be Sonic 3 Complete for sure.

Nope, Sonic CD is an actual remaster as there were no other ways to play the game besides owning a SEGA CD or Sonic Gems Collection. The versions of Sonic 1, 2, 3K, Spinball etc. on Steam are all ports.
Now that sonic orgins is out... This better be real on mobile too.

If the music is what's holding things up, why not have Masato Nakamura come do an all new soundtrack for it (fuck the PC music!)? It would add a whole new dimension to the game, and the Sonic 1/2 jingles would be lovingly restored. 09/2017 EDIT - Fuck it, get Tee Lopes to do a new soundtrack.

If they can't get the music situation sorted out, that would be the best option. Losing Ice Cap's music would be sad, but I could live without Carnival Night's clown rap and Launch Base's jungle music.

It's down to the technical differences between a port and a from-the-ground-up recreation. Taxman is essentially creating a new title.

If Sega finally gives you the opportunity to complete this mobile Sonic 3 then make it based on the romhack Sonic 3 Complete. There is people who say that the iOS/Android versions of Sonic 1 and 2 are the definitive way to play the games since they can also be played the old way, no save feature and all,thus appealing to both newbies and veteran Sonic fans, Sonic 3 Complete is right now,the definitive way to play Sonic 3,since it offers so much more +Lots of bug fixes and even for free, but if it is something that will never be able to offer is widescreen,60FPS,HD,and a catchy upbeat arrange soundtrack. @@MrKennyWilliams A Sonic 3 prototype has been discovered a couple weeks back. The Michael Jackson songs were replaced with songs that would go on to be used in the PC version. Supposedly these songs were actually intended for the original Mega Drive/Genesis release. If they could simply modify the game to utilize these songs, then they should be able to re-release the game without getting in trouble due to Michael Jackson's (uncredited) involvement.

Go figure that Sega is just doing this to steal our money and run off with it, they won't really care to fix it and leave it as a buggy and unfinished mess and not even allow Headcannon to give updates which shows how much Sega only cares about money to Quantity over Quality. Guess it's up to the Modding Community to pick up the dirty pieces and fix it themselves, if BetterSADX can be fixed, "yet no one cares to fix Adventure 2's buggy mess" then the modding community can do a better job instead of Sega's Greed.
