Song of India Dracaena Houseplant Care

What a beautiful houseplant! The Dracaena reflexa is an outstanding easy to grow houseplant. The Dracaena with the white/creamy variegation is commonly known as Song of India. These tropical plants are common, and do not require much fuss at all. Very much an easy to grow houseplant. The song of india plant is great for rooms with bright light but nothing direct. When grown as a houseplant they also could be considered a low water plant, though I think they look best with regular watering when the conditions for growth permit. Sometimes houseplants or most plants common as plants for indoors are not very exciting and drab. The Song of India plants may not be one for the rare plant index but they are gorgeous variegated plants for the home and garden.

Hi, Jeff. I completely understand your love for this variety of dracena. I have 3 other varieties but not this one ( I can wait). I saw a table full of them at Lowe's one day, and they were a show-stopper for sure. I'm glad you mentioned the fluoride; it really can cause brown edges, so I use filtered water. Thanks! :)

I'm a bit desperate so bare with me. My mother bought me a song of India for my birthday on our last outing together. She's currently preparing to pass due to cancer; making these plants she bought me that much more special to me. I've got the darker green one that seems to be doing well for itself. But the brighter Song of India plant seems to be struggling; though it's conditions are identical to that of the darker one. At first it had some leaves withering, and then it started dropping a few leaves on occasion. It's got 3 stocks and one of them lost most all it's lower leaves yesterday. I woke up this morning to that same stock having gone completely limp; seemingly due to the weight of it's healthy green top. It seems the stock itself has some kind of problem and it simply couldn't support the weight any longer. I did the only thing I figured I could do; and clipped the top of that one stock; so now it's just a bare stick. While the other two stocks are seemingly much better off; one of them is showing similar signs of withering leaves and I fear it too will run into similar problems. If anyone reading this may have some suggestions; please let me know. I live in a humid region, they've got indirect shaded sunlight; and I water them about once per week or so if not a little longer.

I hope the top stalk that you clipped off you put into a jar of tap water so that new roots form and after 1-1.5 inch of roots you can repot into another pot. Regarding the main plant, it’s difficult to say without seeing it up close, but I would take it into a plant store/horticulturist for their opinion/guidance. So sorry about your dear Mama… stay strong dear one🌿💐🪴🌺🌼

The Song of India actually grows in basically full sun here. They are common container plants on lanais, so the only sun protection they get is from the screening, which isn't much. They can get brown leaf tips during the heat of summer but that is about it. You end up having to top them after a while because they get too tall and the leaves are way up so all you see is bare stem.

Some of the branches are brown with no leaves. There are a few leaves on each plant. I wld like to put them all in one pot so that it looks full not straggly. Do I remove the brown stems that look dead without leaves? I can’t seem to find anything showing the process.
