Oooh, propagating is so fun and rewarding, kind of like Christmas morning! I finally found a Song Of India at Lowe’s last week and knew I would kick myself if I didn’t buy it. Now after watching your video I’m going to propagate a few stems, thanks! I’ll search your videos to see if you also have tips on propagating philodendrons, specifically the Gloriosum. The mycorrhiza is a cool idea, I hadn’t thought of it before. I wonder if I can use that as a general additive to when I plant in the garden?

Hi! I know , right? Isn’t propagating fun ! I just completed a croton propagation video and will be uploading it soon. As to your question on mycorrhiza, yes you can add it to your garden plants. 😀🪴

@@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN oh great! I look forward to it. I have three dreadlock crotons which I found at Lowes, much to my surprise. I bought two Joseph’s coat or Goldust croton, not exactly sure. Anyway they are small and I had them in the ground less than two days and the IGUANAS discovered them. I’m so upset. There is some left and I will propagate. I’ve had a Picasso/paint brush croton for several years, I love it! So hard to find too.

My friend gave me a bouquet of flowers March 26th. More than half of the greens and one flower are still looking nice in the vase. On June 28th I wondered if maybe one of the cuttings maybe sprouted roots and what I think is a Song of India has some little roots on it, so I am planning on planting it soon. 😃

Hi there! I've followed this method for my last (!) three stems that I cut to save my Song of India that got thrips I couldn't eradicate. I prepared the stems for propagation this in July (!) and there is not one sign of a root anywhere. There are no thrips or problems with the cuttings. They are still alive, but I've had to re-cut the end tips to make sure no rot. I change water every 7-10 days. What do I do? Some sources suggest rooting hormone with perlite & moss instead of water, and shaving the end bit of the stem. I don't want to kill them though....any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, sorry about your plant not rooting . Yes, you can try propagting stem with root hormone and damp spaghnum moss( wrapped in plastic bag to keep it moist) , that method will work as will placing cutting directly into soil as another method. Make sure you have a tan colored segment of stem and not a green area near the top of leaves, that area is very hard to root. Also , song Of India takes a long time to root regardless of method used we have found, A month or more sometimes . Hope this helps 😀🌳

I have one other question: Once you cut the stem to be used for propagation, I noticed the remaining stem in the original plant had no more leaves below where it was cut. Will that existing stem continue to grow and produce new leaves? Or will it die off?

  • @LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN

Hi! She will continue to grow and we have found that several new "lateral" buds form below the cut bringing you new a bunch of new leaves (which will make the plant even fuller looking)😀 🪴

2 STEMS have been sitting in water for 2 months now , there is very little sign of rooting . I change water everyday also and yet its not showing any signs of rooting ..

Hmm, i would consider changing out the water a little less, maybe out once a week. Changing water frequently maybe disturbing the tiny new roots. Also did you get a woody segment to root? If you cut a stem to close to top of plant, I have found using those types of cuttings don’t tend to root. Hope this info is helpful to you and your new plant roots soon😀🪴
