I literally just bought the Odin 2 a week before the odin 2 mini announcement. At first I felt a little bit of FOMO and a little sad. I was even thinking of selling it once I received it. Until I got my Odin 2 and started using it. It is an AMAZING device. I love my Odin 2. Even the weight. Its premium feeling and worth every dollar. (It cost me about USD$528 after shipping and duties to Singapore). Playing the different systems has been a dream on it. And Russ is right too, for emulation you don't need the latest hardware. The software is what holds it back and it's kinda plateaued anyway becos the games don't need powerful or the latest hardware, they just need software that can emulate them well.

I also travel with a PS Vita, and usually nothing else. It's not a perfect handheld but it's tiny, lightweight, great battery as you mentioned, and a HUGE library of games when taking into account the PSP games which run natively, many PS1 and PS2 classics that were officially released by Sony, the large and still active homebrew scene, and my two personal favorite systems to emulate (GBA and SNES, esp good on Vita because neither is hampered by lack of L2/R2).

This is like the perfect handheld to me, pocketability is a requirement for me so the Odin2 was always a bit too big. I got the Pocket 4 Pro and am mostly happy with it, but the symmetric sticks, smaller screen, and D1100 instead of Snapdragon have been limitations. I think this thing isn't to replace the Odin2, it's for people like me who want a properly small handheld that's still good for modern-ish gaming.

  • @dschultz9466

Your videos give a lot of good information and let people make informed choices on handhelds. The Odin 2 mini looks good on paper but that price just pushes it out of reach. I bought a Steam Deck at the end of last year and absolutely love it for emulation. Previously I had an Anbernic RG351P, and recently bought both an RG35XX H as an upgrade to the 351P without losing the super pocketability, and a PowKiddy X55 for when I wanted a bigger screen but didn't feel like having my Steam Deck out. But now I want a more powerful handheld closer to the Steam Deck, and I was torn between the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and the Anbernic RG556. At first I was swayed by the AMOLED and ergonomics of the RG556, and it very nearly won the decision, but ultimately I wanted something with that extra oomph to play GameCube and PS2, and rewatching your videos on both consoles I finally decided on the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. I don't think Ill be disappointed at all even with the lower resolution.

I also always felt the face buttons were not as "mushy" as I would like. Also the joysticks, while a huge improvement over the standard Switch style sticks they really feel small on the 2. The most important difference between the Odin 2 Mini and the PocketS is going to be the sticks and D-Pad. Odin 2 Mini will have the same ones on the Odin 2. D-Pad is identical to the PS Vita's and the sticks feel great for a handheld. Actual analog sticks, not the Switch-style ones. Both are going to feel premium and pocketable, too.

It's been decided. I'm getting the Odin 2. After my daughter graduated and went to college. I took her ps vita, and turned it into a retro gaming unit. It's great, but after a while hands do cramp up. After watching your last video praising the Odin 2 perhaps that's exactly what I'm looking for (plus the addition of ps 2 GameCube ...etc. bonus points) this mini looks great, but be warned it might not be comfortable to hold, specially with the addition of L2 and R2 buttons. I got a feeling people are gonna be fleeced. 🤘

The Odin 2 is my ultimate handheld for at home and anywhere I'm bringing a backpack. I like my pocket sized handhelds for on the go.... wondering if this would be pocketable enough to be the ultimate solution for that purpose. I still think it might be a bit too chunky for my liking. What's nice is I can use sync thing to sync all of my saves states across both handhelds and the Android setup would be super easy since I already did the legwork with my Odin 2.

Hey Russ great video as always. You mentioned you were curious about the timing of AYN releasing Odin Mini. Just my speculation, but the fact Odin Mini is going pre-sale within days of Aya Neo Pocket S shipments, it feels like a power play on AYN’s part. I myself was on that shipping list and cancelled. Again this my speculation, respect to both companies. Both produce fantastic forward thinking products and competition is good. Especially for the consumer.

Doing some rough calculations, each dimming zone will be approximately 73x73 pixels in size. Here's the math: A resolution of 1920x1080 equals 2,073,600 pixels. Dividing this by 384 dimming zones gives us about 5,400 pixels per dimming zone. Taking the square root of 5,400, we get 73, indicating that each dimming zone is 73x73 pixels. On a 5-inch screen, this translates to each dimming zone being around 4.2x4.2mm... Not too bad for a device at the price this will likely be...

I know there was a lot of talk about a screen upgrade before the Odin 2 even came out, so maybe that's why they are making this. It looks great for what it is. However, I think I am in the same boat as Russ and like the size and ergonomics on what we just got in the original Odin 2. If anything, I would have much preferred to see some modular upgrades to the Odin 2, a new mini LED or OLED panel that I could swap in at home (although I am sure I'm in the minority of people feeling comfortable enough to do something like that) with the option on which screen to get when you order. Some new button options, as far as having the xbox layout and color options, would have been super cool. Lastly, I wish they would just make the backplate in different color options, much like JSAUX and others did for the Steam Deck.

The Odin 2 is the 1st emulation handheld I bought after waiting for several years to finally buy one, and I intend it to be what I use for several years to come. It emulates everything I want to already. But the big thing for me is the built in grips. I used to have a Vita and while I really enjoyed a lot of games on it, I always hated the ergonomics. I would never consider buying an Odin 2 in the Vita's form factor. I don't think I'd even enjoy it at that point.

I got my Odin 2, first handheld since a 2DS just before they stopped making them and a Gameboy Color I barely ever used in 2000. I would point to Steam -> Steam OLED buyers. Plenty of people still kept their LCD, but others sold/upgraded. While I don’t know how much mini LED will impact content not designed for HDR or anything, it should still offer a visual improvement. Whether that will matter and/or be noticeable to an individual or not will be unique to each consumer. I have no interest, but on an upgrade in a few years? I’d pay $30 for the Mini LED over 1” larger LCD.

I don't know if it's possible or viable currently, and if they make a portable PC of this size it will either be heavily underpowered or have a battery that lasts 30 mins of light use and overheating like the core of the sun. Portable PCs still have a long way to go to solve issues with power consumption, smaller sizes, a comfortable way to navigate through the OS without a mouse and keyboard (in the case of the Windows handhelds), etc. But there's Winlator and Cassia in the future (which looks very promising), so Windows gaming is possible on the Odin 2, but it's far from perfect though (but Cassia will probably improve it a lot).

We're still waiting for advancements in solid state batteries and for "solid state cooling" to make its way to mainstream markets and handhelds. When that happens, we can have better cooling and battery life in the small form factor we want. That, and/or for a proper compatibility between ARM chips and x86/64 software for better power efficiency. Companies are *trying* recently, so we'll see.

Ngl, I love the look of it and personally I got the transparent blue Odin2 and... I hate its look. I prefer the simpler odin1 I had. So the idea of a sexier sleeker vita-like version of the device I love is very appealing. But I even have reservations of the ergonomics on the Odin2. The idea of losing even the little bit of bumps is a real bummer and I just don't think there is enough of a different to justify an upgrade for a pretty hefty pricetag. Especially as a preorder unknown. I got an early RG552 and the Fan noise and overall bulk made it something I never felt like using compared to its lighter anbernic family members. I might get suckered in on the hype cycle when the hands on reviews come out but I think I have staved off the shiny new toy syndrome for now.

With the PiMax Portal QLED, it has four options for local dimming zones from close - extreme. I'm not sure what the difference is number wise in dimming zones between close and extreme. Along with options for 1080p 60,90 & 120 along with 4k 90 & 120. I ran four tests: close 1080p120 extreme 1080p120, close 4k120, & extreme 4k120. Extreme 4k120 (no BFI) really does pop with minimal backlite bleed however there is some haloing between really bright objects and black backgrounds. An example would be the Triforce pieces in motion in the intro on LttP. When they stop on the logo it looks really sharp. Viewing angles still aren't great in comparison to AMOLED and as mentioned, there's still minimal backlite bleed. Close 1080p feels much more like a regular panel. Still decent but not the same as either the extreme 1080 or 4k options. 4k120 extreme does drain the 4000mAh real fast. 15min was about 8% of battery just playing the LttP intro. So hopefully AYN has found a better to way handle these challenges. Though I haven't tested 1080p vs 4k battery life drain on the Portal so maybe that'll make a big difference. Overall the PiMax QLED is a beautiful screen, I'd consider it a significant upgrade over the panel found in the Odin 1 but it's not AMOLED or super AMOLED in Samsung phones.

The odin 2 is already pretty small, but I personally prefer my handhelds to be as small as possible. 19.5mm thickness, just barely larger than an OG Vita and the same amount of power? Mini LED is a madsive upgrade over a standard LED for contrast. A great middle ground between LED and OLED. And that number of dimming zones on a 5" screen will be absolutely gorgeous! Also, it's a huge win to see that they actually put the Dpad and R-joystick further in. Its a bit puzzling to see they pulled it off on a smaller handheld with less space than the original Odin 2, which has the controls lined up vertically. Honestly, what a weird freaking device. They massively improved the display and control layout, but made the screen smaller and removed the ergonomic grips. Every improvement seems like it's been canceled out by a relevant downgrade lol.
