RG35XXSP Review: King Clamshell
Ойындар
Anbernic's new RG35XXSP is a rare feat in the budget handheld space, in that it combines excellent performance, hardware, and software into one package, with very few compromises. In this video we'll take a look at my past several days with the device and why I think it's a no-brainer for clamshell retro handheld enthusiasts.

A couple updates: - I filmed more USB charging footage but forgot to include it! The charging experience is the same as always -- USB-A to C cables will work, C-to-C cables may work if you use a (non-PD) charger, and some lower PD chargers may work but most won't. Anbernic really needs to add the proper resistors to their board to standardize the charging process. - You can play HDMI with the shell closed but the device needs to be plugged into power at the same time. Shoutout to The Phawx for figuring that out! - I said "3.3x integer scale" etc in my scaling/screen section, but that's not correct, I should have just said "3.3x scale". Please don't be mad.

Something else to add maybe: Batocera runs on the RG35XX Plus/H, so it should run here too and it can use bluetooth audio. Also, what actual resolution the HDMI is using would be a useful info. Aspect ratio correction can also be done via the Screen/TV settings (screen sometimes, TV usually)

A perfect option for shutting the device would be putting it to sleep with a delayed shut-off. So, if I close the device, it goes to sleep, and if it stays closed for 5 minutes, it turns off, then we can adjust the time frame it stays in sleep before turning off. That way it won't drain the battery too much in sleep, but if I want to close it just for five, ten, or thirty minutes, then when I pick it back up I don't have to wait 20 minutes for it to boot up each time.

Got mine yesterday, loving it with MinUI, which has just added the perfect lid-action. It goes to sleep when you close the lid. If you open it within about 2 minutes, it'll be right back. If you let it sleep for longer than that, it saves its state and shuts down. That's perfection. I only miss two things in MinUI: The quick switcher from OnionOS, and a Favorites list. I guess I'll use the recently played list for that, but Favorites would be better.
The most important thing for me is that they fix the sleep when you close the lid. That's like 90% of the appeal for me.
GBA is probably my favourite retro console to play, and I never got to have an SP so this was an insta-buy for me! Seeing a more in-depth review really confirms I'm going to love this thing. I absolutely cannot wait for it to arrive.
The first handheld that was truly mine (not borrowed, not a hand-me-down) was the GBA SP so I have a soft spot for it. I've bought an RG351P years ago to scratch that GBA itch, but I think I finally found a successor!

I still have my childhood SP. It’s been upgraded with an IPS screen and expanded with an Everdrive Mini, but is otherwise the same handheld I’ve had for decades. Others have come and gone but I keep finding myself going back to the SP, if only for the clamshell design and perfect controls. I’m super excited to try this out and hopefully the emulation is good enough for it to finally replace my SP with something almost as compact but much more capable. Thanks for the review!
Very good work of Anbernic, this time, all features like the shut down and button combination for certain features really confirms they've put good work to it. I went with the H due to the horizontal form factor but I really appreciate what they did with th SP. Thank you for again a great review. I am still going to wait and see what the competition for a clamshell are going to be. Because if I would consider PSP, i would really love a stick or two for ridge racer. This will truly differentiate my original SP with IPS and everdrive. 🙏

Your explanation is great. I really wanted this RG35xx SP. It was my dream, especially the blue color. My original was stolen by my addicted friend. He glued it without me. This console is great, but I can't afford to buy it for several reasons. When it turns out that this product is available, my entire childhood was liberating. I'm from Brazil. tumara translator is great from google😊
The RG35XX-H is still the best version of the RG35XX line because of the L-stick and R-stick. Playing Super Mario 64 DS or Animal Crossing: Wild World with the sticks is awesome. Within Drastic, you can program the L stick for movement and the R-stick (and click) for the stylus. And the horizontal layout means that your fingers don't overlap while holding the device. I like this new SP form (although it's a chonker), but the nostalgia alone doesn't overcome its limitations.
Great video. I just ordered the blue transparent one. My first gameboy was the blue sp.
This is the flip you're looking for. It's simply perfect, it allows for all the goodness that is a Gameboy SP with more chops to play all you'd ever want to play on this form factor. I happily preordered (transparent black) and can't wait for it to get here 😊
The silver one really makes me nostalgic for my old SP that should still be around somewhere, and I’m definitely going to pickt it up as soon as there is a nice sale, because at $100 with shipping, I’ll keep playing my H.

@@TheArchitect9593 Did you try one? I found the A30 isn't great but I've used worse for the same price in the past. With the firmware update to improve brightness settings and dpad tape mod fix, it's usable but nothing really excuses the battery. Problem with the A30 and no custom firmware out of the gate along with serious competition from other companies, for a few dollars more in a horizontal layout it's possible to get the RG35xxH which is superior and not much larger. For that reason I can't really buy into the RG28xx either without at least wifi. Generally, there's no rush for any of these handhelds save for the original Miyoo Mini which people still try to resell for ridiculous prices as 'rare.'

Fantastic review like usual, I'm still rocking a 351V but I am considering either an SP or the RG35XX-H which seems like the perfect horizontal 4:3 device.
Very thorough review. Appreciate all the efforts you make in creating all of these videos. Love them all. On a side note, in addition to your Contra test, I think you should also consider adding a Drill Dozer test, because, to me, that gives the best indication of whether or not the shoulder buttons are well made. I just purchased my first RG35XX Plus and, yes, the shoulder buttons rattle, but also, their release actuation occurs way at the bottom, way before the buttons are released. It was the worst with L2. I had to hold it down with so much force to keep it activated in other games. Had I seen how those perform in a game like Drill Dozer, I would’ve known this wasn’t the unit for me. Sadly, I’ll be returning it. Anyway, just a thought. Looking forward to your next videos. Peace, bro.
Love your channel! This is just a comment about Anbernic ... I just got my RG35xx SP in the mail...DOA, doesn't even power on. Left it charging for a few hours, nothing. Dead. I'm done with that Company...I had quality issues with my RG 351v when I bought it too a few years back. There's too many better players in the game than to give these guys my money. Their QC (if they even have it) is garbage. UPDATE: From Anbernic Support - "returns are only available in the US and Japan at this time." so if you are in Canada...you are SOL.
Nitpicks: - 2.7 is not an integer so it doesn’t make sense to say “2.7x integer scale”. You could say 2.7x scale or 2.7x non-integer scale - non-integer scales can be taken care of with “sharp bilinear” shaders (if shaders are available on the device). Looks nearly as good as integer scale, that most people wont notice the difference
I ordered the blue one using your link. I’m super excited. The H will be next.
I've only recently gotten into emulation gaming after discovering I can do it with my oled steam deck (largely thanks to your videos), and I would say I have all my mobile retro gaming needs covered. but despite that, this is reeeeally tempting. I think I'll take your advice and let this thing cook for a while longer, but I definitely see getting one in my future
I really appreciate you mentioning the lack of bluetooth audio. I was on the fence about it, but learning this is a dealbreaker for me at this stage. I really hope we see bluetooth audio hit these cheaper handhelds soon to compensate for those on-board mono speakers and clicky buttons!

Gotta admit this one caught my attention last week when the announcement video popped up. Just began my way on retro gaming and played safe going with a Miyoo Mini Plus that just arrived yesterday so won't be getting another console for a while but gotta admit this one brought me memories from back in the day when I was younger and my mother gave me a SP as a bday present.
I would also add on the "Maybe Not" list: - No bluetooth audio - Not auto-switching to controller input for player 1 when connected - Not auto-switching controls back to console once controller is disconnected - Not able to have device closed with display off when connected to external display - That battery sitting on the processor is not only gonna go bad and swell, but might even explode one day
Reposting my comment that I made on Taki's video: I would personally hold off on buying this. Anbernic is still using their barebones OS that is also STILL in a lackluster state on the other RG35 devices - which normally wouldn't be a problem due to the option of using a custom OS. But those are also not at a stable and full-featured state yet. Batocera Lite is still missing features and has some wonky emulation, KNULLI (which is based on Batocera Lite IIRC) is currently only available for the SP device and also in a very unfinished state. OnionOS has finally received an update after months of silence but it also very much still an alpha. I bought a RG35XX+ a couple months back and it has been collecting dust ever since because none of the current software options are satisfactory. Also, Anbernic devices usually go on sale a couple months after release which is also a reason to wait.

To your own detriment, you're ignoring the two most up to date and arguably best CWFs for this family of devices currently, MuOS and MinUI (see: video). And you're complaining about the stock OS which according to several youtubers is actually in a very good state by now. Have you tried the new updated one? There's a lot of people needlessly fixated on Batocera and Garlic just because they worked best in previous / different devices.

The only thing with the DS lite and any device that has a backlit screen, is that the colours get crushed and don't display right. Games were made without the backlit screen in mind, so colours were artistically made to pop a little more to compensate. Looks easier to see on a non-back lit screen with this developer choice, but doesn't display right on a backlit screen. So what I often do is tone down the brightness or better still use a filter to dull the pallette a little on an emulator. It's not something that can be easily done on a Nintendo DS Lite.

From your comparison visually it seems that the screen is less vibrant on the clamshell. Haven't heard that you've noticed or pointed it out. May be it is just different settings for brightness?
What does 2.7x integer scale even mean? Isnt that an oxymoron?
Just ordered mine. Can't wait. I was considering waiting until the Miyoo Mini Flip came out to make a decision but personally I am not of a fan of dual analog sticks on a vertical handheld which is what Miyoo's SP clone has based on what I have seen. Makes the layout way too cramped and looks like it'd be uncomfortable to use. So I decided, screw it, instead of waiting I just went with Anbernic's device.
This video shows yet again why you're the best reviewer of these devices. The software section alone should set a standard for others - instead of trying things for five minutes and complaining the dpad doesn't work for dreamcast/PSP, a little bit of involvement allows you to showcase and debunk some stuff (power button analog toggle, quick shutdown and its options, MuOS and Knulli etc.) that the internet usually takes and spreads like gospel just to sh*t on this or that OS or device. Kudos!
you can also usually set the aspect ratio on most monitors/tv's if you want to get rid of wide screen modes on the 4:3 native systems
Getting more and more excited about this form factor as i go through the review video's. But i gotta agree with Russ would rather opt for the H if i could get one. Like the fact that the SP basically protects itself by closing up so a case should not be as neccesary when you carry it around.
Gba SP helped me through my hard time when my friends were owning Xbox and Playstation. It retain my craving for more expensive consoles and kill my times until I can afford one. Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town was my grinding during free time
Great content! One note about using the handheld with an external controller for 1 player games, after pairing the BT controller (that will automatically be controller 2 in RetroArch) the fastest and most convenient way is to go to "quick menu - controls - port 2 controls - mapped port" and set it to port 1; then "save content directory remap file" under "manage remap file". This way both the BT controller and internal controls act as player 1, and you don't need to do anything to go from handheld to console and back (except connecting the BT controller lol). Let me know if I was able to teach something to the most gaming knowledgeable person in the world ;)
Hey bud, thank you for the amazing detailed review as well as the CFW! I have a question though, I ordered mine with the extra 128 GB SD card, do I use that card to install muOS? Also, when doing so, would it delete the games on the extra SD card and would I need to move everything off the included 128gb SD card before doing the MOD and install?
Can't wait to grab one, sadly sold to fast
I got one for $48!! 😃 Thanks for the review!
Never tried installing new buttons in any console before but I will on this one. I don't want those clicky annoying things. Im probably the only one who still has the GBA sp since release date and it still works
Good to see muOS getting some recognition after you crapped over it the last time you mentioned it in the rg35xx days.
AWESOME i want one !!!!
It's wild this has so many custom firmware to choose from, they all look really good too lol.
It's something I absolutely won't consider buying cause I have another H700 Anbernic, but I want to touch it. I want to find a brick-and-mortar vendor, or just someone with this unit and just, play it for 10 minutes, maybe 20, and then be done with it.

Buy one for a friend, problem solved 😂
Damn… I ordered the Transparent Black version, I want to also buy the blue… Damn. Ima wait until I get it home before I grab another one, but damn. GBA SP is probably my favorite handheld of all time, probably because I love my Steam Deck (Ima big guy, the Deck is perfect for me). Anywho… Thanks as always Russ
Hey Russ, how do these new handhelds compare to the RG351MP? Just wondering if you could give us your thoughts since the 351MP came out 3 years ago and it’s still sold for around $70-$80.
Waiting on mine to come in
Great video 😊
I really wanted a GBA when I was a kid so this is an instant buy for me
Totally picked this up. Two actually.
I’m so excited for this, but I think I’m gonna hold out for hope of a similar product with two analogue sticks at the bottom for N64 and Dreamcast 👀

Have you heard if the Retroid Pocket Flip? I've got one of those myself, and I'd totally recommend it.

miyoo is rumored to be making one like the rg35xxsp but with thumb sticks
Mine already shipped!
