Solving Our Damp Dilemma: The Last Piece Of The Puzzle - Renovating a House in Portugal
Our old stone farmhouse in Portugal has been plagued with damp, mould and moisture issues for years - and the fabric of the building has suffered as a result. In today's episode we start work on the fourth and final piece of the puzzle so we hopefully end up with a comfortable, warm, dry home.
Today we're installing flexible ventilation ducting running from the roof space through a service cavity on the first floor and into all the rooms downstairs. The goal is to suck out all the warm humid air from the kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms and replace it with fresh air from outside using a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system.
In this video we'll show you how we tackled the retrofit of ventilation ducting in an old building and talk a little bit about how the final solution will work.
If you're a roofer or know a good one that works in central Portugal, please email Kylie hello@makedogrow.com

Wow the loft space is huge and wasn’t that dirty considering how old the house is. Another big prep job ticked off and watching the pipe wrangling was great! Love the way Kylie thinks every task through I hope you get to sleep in a comfy spot very soon you both deserve it.😊

Inspiring to see how you have conquered the damp issues, as Kylie says, you can achieve anything if you have a plan. But what an epic saga ! Battling damp on so many fronts. I remember, the rotten window lintels, joists and most of all the soggy green sludge which used to be your ground floor. What a transformation you have wrought. Downstairs looks so cosy these days. Awesome achievement, surely deserves a celebration or two !
Even your piping is done to an orderly fashion! All lined up like little green soldiers! You guys rock! Hugs from 🇨🇦

Nice! Every house should have some kind of active ventilation IMO. Just solves so many problems and doesn't cost the world.
How good for you two to have the ducting in place! And how wonderfull for having made a community were your viewers can help and advise you with subjects like ventilation systems.
Innuendo and carry on worthy of a classic Kenneth Williams sketch or Carry On film!
WOW! What an ordeal with dampness y’all have had. I haven’t seen anyone among the Portuguese immigrants (and home improvement folks) go to such great lengths-not even 50% the lengths-as you have to have a dry house. This is excellent!
DAVE JOHNSON. About a year ago another channel used a roofer called Dave Johnson. If you look at 'Destino Portugal' you will find a few videos where this took place. By all accounts he is very good at his job...traditional craftman. I hope that helps. ❤

Exhilarating to watch intelligent people reasoning through their decisions. And that’s a lot of pipe to handle, Guy, but no doubt Kylie knows how! 😊
That pipe is a giant Slinky. Did they have Slinkies in the UK in the 70's? It was a ridiculous toy. Well, I have to say I'm impressed! You did a great job getting everything going in the same direction.
@Neilhuny

Yep, Slinkies were a big fad in the UK in the 70's - I'm sure the Physics teacher used one to demonstrate something or other ...
When things comes in a role, its best to have a stick through the hole of the role, hang it up and let it unwind rolling….. its the same with wire, tube or waterhose if they are rolled up and you need to unrole it
Not only are you two talented, you are so funny. People seem to take things too seriously these days. Love your channel.
So entertaining. Thank you. You tubers "MR, AND MRS. ADVENTURE' just did the roof on their Water Mill rehab, their people did a good job.
Your videos are far too short, I could easily spend my whole Sunday watching how you guys are getting along with your build 😊 See you on the next video 👏
My goodness, a kitchen, main floor 1/2 bath and now a bedroom - palatial. Thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us. Bye.
At least the piping is a pretty green colour! As an artist, believe it or not, the green pipe would make the job easier for me rather than having a grey pipe, for instance. Great video, again, and I love the way you work together, again! You're both doing an amazing job. I'm glad that you'll finally have a comfortable place to sleep at long end. Good luck with this week's work. Until next time!
Great to see that you’ve hit 100k subscribers!🎉

Blogger Destino Portugal used an English roofer working in Portugal for a job he was doing .(near castello Branco I seem to remember ) that was a whole replacement timber rafters /tile battens /Tile /insulation job .Not the usual Portuguese concrete / tile construction .Might be worth contacting him for a connection

Yes, I saw the episode. Destino Portugal is from Penela, much closer to Guy and Kylie.
I smiled when I heard a few more innuendoes. I continue to be impressed with how well you have planned, and that's important with the type of construction of your house. In typical stud wall houses in the US, different subcontractors install the various systems, running their wires and pipes and ducts through the wall cavities with only token regard to each other's work. With solid walls there is limited space, and the systems must be coordinated carefully.

Your home is going to be amazing because of the attention to detail you put in No short cuts no bodge it and scarper Just a truly professional approach to everything you turn your hands to I both admire and applaud you both ❤
Very interesting. Im going to look at your links as I watch some other KZreadr's who have similar damp problems in their stone buildings, and this might be an option for them also.ķ The Nurse in me and having tken care of patients with multiple tubing and medication IV lines and also being my Father's daughter, I would think labeling the tubing on every level and at the entrance and exit of where the piping goes before you enclose it will help you when you are doing your connections later on, and if you have to do a maintenance work in the future? It would be quite a fiddlely job to try to figure out each tubing after it is encased in? Or something like that? LOL I look forward to watching future videos on the next process of this ventilation system.

Living in the 70s in Portugal in an equivalent old farmhouse, we had NO dampness-reduction system. Nor either heating or cooling systems. For OUR family their ABSENCE was a blessing; we had NO issues adjusting between inside & outside climates. PS: I now live in a house in Belize with only 2 outside walls, both on the rain-&-wind sides, with LOTS of natural ventilation in those 2 existing walls. Maybe my advantage is having grown up in Indonesia in similar houses, and NOT being native to the typical European housing... My electricity bill is around EURO 12 per month.
That was very satisfing. From the snake and ladders beginnings to the orderly end.
This side by side view reminds me of the it takes two game. Congratulations on the great work!
Interesting seeing how your planning ahead of an unfinished build. Finding what you need is most challenging at the least. But you do a fantastic job of your work.
Another transition milestone. Some new skills and hacks. It's done but a possible hack. Take a suitably sized length of rope to measure your tubing run and mark it. With your pipe layed out, outside, overlay marked rope length and cut tubing piece(s).
You are both looking and sounding more relaxed. I think your tweaking how your priorities for the year has worked! hope you feel like it too!
Imagine the cost, if you paid a builder to carry out all this work.

Bravo on the editing… someone learnt a new skill ~Yay for you it seriously was great (yes I noticed otherwise I wouldn’t have commented!!). I love that you are keeping it fresh. Goodness knows I couldn’t do it……
So of course I only know how the interaction between you two is depicted for a you tube channel during these very challenging jobs which neither one of you have any experience with. But I find it so refreshing that you all appear to really complement each other well when overcoming some serious challenges and jobs that would make the average couple do a whole lot if cussing and fussing.

In real life we really do complement each other… we’ve developed a way of working (and communicating) together that has the lowest amount of friction and makes it all (mostly) enjoyable. Of course editing helps, we can just remove the bits that are a little negative or stressful 😀
Looks similar to what I'm attempting to do now, only this is a laundry chute! 😂
Hi guys great work. A few tips from someone that installs and maintains building services, just like you guys done when ever you need to to feed pipe, duct or cables always run it flat on the floor and feed it, pulling them of the coil or drum always causes kinks and nots and more work that is needed, I don't know what system you guys using but it is always advised to lag the supply duct because the temp of the supply air can be different from the space temp causing the duct to condensate.
Well done both of you working out how to do a complicated job. Look forward to seeing your next episode ❤

Hello, good work today. You will have to make sure you don't nail into the pipe as you put your wall in. Good luck

Sorry I had to snigger watching you struggle with that pipe. We use something like that here in the Netherlands which is about 20mm diameter (for wiring) and that's a nightmare over any significant length. So I can only imagine how much more work you had to do.
You two make me laugh well done

Looked like a wrestling match but well done you got there in the end. I assume you had to mark each pipe so you know where it runs to ready for when you install the heat exchanger unit.. Yes, all the pipes are labelled up in the loft 😀 And yes, helps both with hearing/cooling depending on the season. It’s not a replacement for proper heating/cooling though, you still need proper systems for that too
It’s like an Australian garden hose..!!
@MAKEDOGROW (17:30) If you add just 1 more pipe, then you could BRAID 3 pipes together (twice). It should have NO effect on operation, but would definitely make a repair-technician go bonkers!🤣🤣🤣 (Note the 'coulda-shoulda-woulda'...)
