#16 New year, new windows and more renovation work on our house in northern Portugal
In this week's video, I get back to work on our Portuguese house renovation project after a break. I show what we got up to at the end of last year and catch you up on some of our new plans for this year. If you are new here, check out my older videos and get up to date on our Portuguese renovation.
The windows we went for are thermally broken, aluminum double glazed for anyone interested.

It turned out that I didn't really have to move her along, the danger zone was smaller than I thought
Annnnnnnd relax, Michael is back in de house! Hope you are as happy to see us watchers here, as we are to see Verity and yourself back to it. Welcome back and I love the windows in that colour, a great addition to your home, as will the shutters be and as the rooms that are decorated already are. I’m going to look at it this way, pre 2024 is series one and post 2023 is series two and so this video is series two-episode one. On that note, can’t wait for episode two, thank you both 🙏🏻
Great to see you back. Try cutting a chamfer on the back of the horizontal bars at the opening edge of your shutters to allow for non-contact when operating. 👍

As a couple you wirk very well together and your skill set is improving saving money a long the way insulating the roof will be a great job all the best 🏡🌞💚👍🧰🍻
That was a clever way of making your shutters.
Mila 🐕 has the kind of life every dog should have
Wise decision on the Insulation blocks Michael and will so much easier and pleasant to do in a warmer spring / summer. The one good thing about the very small loft opening is no crappy old furniture or big stuff to get rid of 😁. Oh and just to end !!!!!!! “ Mila’s got a boyfriend, Mila’s got a boyfriend “ 😂😂

We are over the coldest weather now, so it's even easier to push that job down the line... Hopefully, I won't forget to do it! I think the dogs have fallen out, he hasn't popped over this week!

Good to see some progress 👍 Like us you are coming to terms with how long things take here. We are building from scratch, but like you are discovering to accept the Portuguese way😂😂😂

As you drive through France look at the way the French hang their shutters. I live in France and my Shutters keep out wind and cold in the winter and cannot be lifted off (burglers) when closed and locked like yours.
Welcome back👏👏. Looking forward to watching you getting stuck into all of your projects

Hi. Just watching ur video and have 2 notes regarding fixing of ps plates: put mortar / glue not on ps only, but also on the wall. Then all of plates should be fixed to wall by special bolts. Good luck.
Nossa que falta de consideração. Mas, ainda bem que voltaram. Obrigada.
Green windows look awesome even more so when the insulation and render is finished. We just had satin black windows in our house and were a bit worried but we're really pleased. Keep going, glad you're back 👍

With that polystyrene, might need to back butter the whole block, better still use a mesh. I’ve heard that external lime rendering is traditionally only done in the warmer months also. Good to see you back! Windows are lovely!

I think that is what we will do, apply more mortar to the back of the boards with a mesh over the top of them. Thank you!

@@michaelboalchSorry, I meant to put the adhesive on both the wall and the polystyrene block, with the mesh on the wall. Using a notched trowel, just like tiling. I realised my first comment was not very clear, 😕. Apologies. 😊
@michaelboalch

Ah ok, no worries. I'll have to do more research!
Nice!
for isolation use 12 mm trowel ,to get 60% contact with wall you still need to use fixing as only glue is not good. there was nothing wrong how u start isolating. Glue dry's out in 2 -3 days.

New windows make a huge difference. I was thinking about cork insulation so interesting to see you reasons for using the blocks. Wonder if you can drill and fit some sort of pin to help hold them in addition to mortar? Going to have to cope with strong winds. Nice to see you back.

The boards will be mechanically fixed also, we just didn't get to that bit!
Welcome back you were missed Michael and Verity 😊 Lots of changes 😊 Love the windows and the colour nice shade of green 🥰 Good decision on the chimney a dangerous job on your own and as an additional plus you have found a good company to work with and that is always a plus. I think a lot of people make changes in their plans after living in the home for awhile, you realise what works and what doesn't and adjust accordingly so very sensible. Plus this way you have comfortable living quarters while getting your home sorted how you really want 😊 Previous owners left lots of cr*p for you too deal with didn't they 🤦 Look forward too seeing what's next on your next video.

Where did you get those shutter hinges? We are in Central Portugal and they look perfect for us as we want insulate externally. Love the window colour.

The metal hinges are from Leroy Merlin, the white brackets were made by myself! Thank you
Nice to see you back!! 😀 would definitely go with picture framing the insulation and plenty of dabs on the wall, guaranteed contact adhesion then!! Nice windows 👍👏

Good way of doing perfectly similar shutters. Good on you. As the roof replacement is in the future, is it prohibitvely costly for you to think of raising it a little all around the edges? To be able to use such a lovely big space would be fantastic. The wooden framework is not wasted in any way, just raised, which is costly of course. Just an idea. Best wishes from Australia.

I didn't realise at the time, that you had so much room underneath and intend to use it. At least those rooms underneath may be a lot quicker to prepare to use.

Something it's just not worth it tackling a job by yourself, especially when it's up high and heavy and involves your roof.👍

How are you going to finish the shutters on the sides ?

The insulation will cover the brackets and become flush with the shutters, I'll be able to show you soon... hopefully!

H. I see you make the classic mistake of doing the house first. Should sort the garden first then things can be growing while you sort the house. I see you have the classic airy bricks. I can't get in my loft as is concrete and the shutters. I removed all and just put curtains up like back in Blighty.. Don't forget you need to go camera for a license before you can have a bonfire, is free but you can't burn without it. I made that mistake as no one told me and cost me 400 euro and no fire between July/Aug/Sept as too high a fire risk. How did you get on with S.E.F. over you staying here as you should really have no problem due too the peace treaty between our 2 countries, but E.E.C. have been sticking their unwanted noses into that matter..Anglo Portuguese accord is a good read should you need to enlighten the thickies in charge. I am in Northern Portugal as well in the mountains where it was 68 yesterday.

Yes maybe, but I'm more into the construction than the garden at the moment! I think we will have blinds or curtains in some of the rooms with bigger windows as shutters don't make as much sense. Yep, always notify the Camara!

Yes , but the garden produces food that you don't have to spend money on at the shop, you know that stuff you need to buy your bricks with.. I would add up all the money you need to buy food with while you are building the house and see what the house really costs you.@@michaelboalch
