Solo Camping on the Jurassic Coast with the Hilleberg Unna & How I pack everything into my 45L Pack!

Join me on a hike to a secluded beach along the Jurassic Coast. It was a bit of a slog to get here but boy was it worth it. Hope you enjoy!
Towards the end of this video I also include an unedited section on how I pack my bag. Please feel free to skip this section if you’d like. I just wanted to include it to address any questions on how I fit everything into my 45L pack.

    An absolute master class on cooking the pizza’s. Some superb drone shots of this spectacular piece of our coastline. I’m not sure about the sand hoppers and the noise they were making under the ground sheet, I don’t think I could put up with that at all. Well done for sticking that out.I think your content has everything in there especially your culinary skills.

    Thanks! Such an easy way to make a really tasty pizza! I was happy the weather cooperated enough on this camp that I could take the drone up. It’s always really nice to see my camp spots from a different perspective. The sand hoppers were interesting but wow I didn’t expect to see so many. Luckily as long as I kept the light off they would quiet down. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB

    So, us swedes are weird in that our pizzerias do not slice our pizzas for us (unless you ask for it, and then they look at you weird). Personally I think that's dumb, but it did result in an innovation I haven't seen elsewhere: cut your pizza using a small pair of kitchen scissors. It works unreasonably well, way better than a pizza wheel unless it's really nice and sharpened often and better than a knife too. Highly recommend throwing a pair in your kit next time you plan a pizza dinner :D

  • @GoingSoloOutdoors

    @GoingSoloOutdoors

    Ай бұрын

    I definitely prefer my pizza cut. When traveling through Italy, most of the places I ordered pizza also did not cut the pies and you would have to ask to have it cut or get a knife. So maybe we are the weird ones for wanting it cut 😂. I first saw someone using scissors in the kitchen back in university. My Chinese friends mom would use them all the time when she was cooking for us. After that I started occasionally using them in the kitchen as well. Makes sense for cutting some items like green onions or even pizza but I still prefer using a knife. Really appreciate your comments. Hope you’re having a nice weekend!

    Your Pizza idea was Spot-On! About the bugs... if you have extra room for 2 additional lights then you can place one light 4-6 ft to the front side of your tent and repeat it for the other front side. The bugs will always follow a straight line from one light to the other light leaving your main tent area nearly bug free! Of course you'll need to not use your inside light while doing this. My USMC RECON MARINES Son taught me that trick. Also helps a lot while cooking in the later evenings.

  • @GoingSoloOutdoors

    @GoingSoloOutdoors

    That’s a really good idea. I’ll have to try it. I’ve only ever used the single light trick, which typically works pretty well and it was able to get the little sand hoppers out of the tent, which was nice, but I’ll have to try the double light 👍. Thanks for the tip! The pizza with the sounds of the waves and that little bit of rain on the tent was a really nice way to end the day! Really taking the time to comment on each video!!

    @@GoingSoloOutdoors If you are using Propane Lanterns then 6-9 ft from each one yeilds the best results. We used 9ft apart. I think it's because of the brightness factor of the glow that Propane Lanterns generate and the heat factor too. Otherwise 4-6 ft is fine. Good luck trying it. It works great for us ... we dislike those flying bugs/insects so much!

    Hi, new subscriber here. First clicked on your last video featuring the Unna in Snowdonia. I've just purchased the Unna because nowadays I have some mobility issues and I wanted a tent with a large door, plus plenty of internal space and headroom. Very pleased to see how it held up in the wind and I feel vindicated in choosing the Unna. I'll be upgrading to 10 mm poles as soon as they are back in stock and will also carry a couple of extra guy lines. Enjoying your videos immensely. Take care

    Nice to hear from you again! The bites were pretty bad. I actually almost postponed this trip because the previous day my skin was still itching and burning everywhere. The thought of hiking with a pack wasn’t very pleasant but luckily I woke up that day feeling much much better. You’d think pitching on these rocks wouldn’t be that comfortable but you gotta love the comfort of modern sleeping pads! Once I get the surface flat enough the pad does a fantastic job of making it just as comfortable as pitching anywhere else. Definitely need the sit pad though to sit up comfortably! Glad you enjoyed the drone footage. It’s nice to actually have good enough weather to bring it out again! It’s great to see these places from a different vantage point! Glad you were interested in seeing me pack the bag. I would have loved to move the camera and give a better shot of where things were being placed inside the bag but I wanted to purposefully leave this part of the video unedited. Just so those who thought fitting all this into a 45 L bag was impossible wouldn’t think I was removing items 😂. ULA makes some really nice packs 👍 Always really appreciate your thoughtful comments! Great video, and also thank you for sharing your packing technique. I'm an experienced backpacker, but that doesn't mean that there isn't new stuff to learn! I did most of my backpacking with a giant McHale backpack, which I still own and love, but it has one flaw (other than McHale packs being insanely expensive, especially ones made of Dyneema like mine is): it's VERY easy to overstuff it with far more gear than you need. So I've been working to adapt to a smaller 55 liter pack which, compared to my giant McHale alpinist pack is quite small. I did get it dialed in pretty well on my last trip, but that doesn't mean that I can't dial it in better. It was still heavy though, which has a lot to do with the fact that I packed my Red and carried it up Asgard Pass.

    There are videos of the 5Ws of selecting a safe and convenient place to pitch your tent. For coastal camping you need to be aware of 2 more Ws: Whigh tides. Wcliff falls. Tidal time charts are often posted. Tidal ranges are very high in this region. Seaweed shows the high tide line. Wcliff falls depend on the geology and recent storms. The Jurassic Coast is fine silt and sand and can have massive land slips at the coastal cliffs. Top or bottom edge of cliffs is no place to camp.

  • @GoingSoloOutdoors

    @GoingSoloOutdoors

    I’m not sure if you watched the full video, but I actually checked the tides. I also wait until high tide to make sure I have a safe campsite. I also wake up before the high tide in the morning as well 👍. I grew up in the US by the ocean and spent nearly every weekend at the beach. You become very use to the using the tide schedule. The area I’ve chosen to camp is also an area that experienced a massive landslide long ago so unlike most of this area there are no large cliffs above me. That’s why I’ve actually camped at this spot before. It’s one of the few areas along this large stretch of coast that is relatively safe. One of the reasons I choose the path I do as well is because I don’t want to walk down the coast underneath the cliffs that are not as safe. Thanks for taking the time to comment! I appreciate the concern 🙏😀.

    Those spiders are completely harmless. Just in case you were worried. I call them September spiders because they build their webs across trails, mostly in September. Their 'offical' name is the Cross Orb Weaver, but their real name (according to me) is the September spider. :) The critters at 37 minutes are sand hoppers. They're crustaceans, not bugs. Again they're completely harmless albeit somewhat annoying. On some beaches they form what look like dust clouds as you walk along the beach disturbing them. During the day they mostly hide under rocks or seaweed or debris, and at dusk and night they come out (as you discovered). The crab at 39 minutes is a common shore crab. They live in the intertidal areas so I'm guessing that where you had your tent was below the spring-tide mark. You were likely not at a full or new moon phase in the lunar cycle, otherwise where you were may have been reached by the sea, particularly if there was a strong on-shore wind or swell.

    I know the spiders were harmless just not a huge fan of them crawling on me. Especially when they get in your face 😅👍. Also was still a bit perplexed having never figured out what bit me so many times leading up to that camp. The sand hoppers are kinda cool (although definitely a bit annoying) we have similar crustaceans back where I grew up in the states. Each time I come here or camp on other beaches I always try to keep an eye on the tide schedule and make sure I am there for high tide so I know the area is safe. I’ve been very fortunate coming here. When I camped here during the previous spring the water was definitely a bit closer to my camp at high tide but still far enough. It was really nice to come back to this spot. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
