Solo Camping in the Rain with a Tarp | Campfire Cooking on the Bushbox XL | Bushcraft

Welcome back to the channel! On this trip my goal was to finally spend a relaxing night in the forest by a warm fire. Mission accomplished! On the hike in, it was a race against the elements. Bands of rain and wind kept coming through the area until around 9pm. It made it a bit challenging to cook as I had to keep stoping to move under the tarp but it all worked out in the end. I highly recommend trying to make this dish yourself if interested. Very filling and much better than just a camp meal. After the rains past the temperature plummeted so it made sitting by the fire the remainder of the evening very cozy until heading to bed. It got quite cold over the night. I woke up to everything frozen and the surrounding area covered in frost. It was definitely one of the colder nights I’ve had in a while. Despite it being very cold it was a beautiful morning and the birds were chirping. I love the sounds of the forest at the beginning of spring! For my next camp I’m going to head back to the phil’s in search of some views. I hope you enjoy the video. Thanks as always for watching and commenting. It’s always fun to get a chance to chat with some of you!
If you’re curious what I’m up to between my camping trips, consider taking a look at my Instagram page. I usually update that a few times a week with images from my shorter exertions in the outdoors! Link below!

    Looked just as cold as my last wild camp this did, 900ft up on a hill.. I also awoke with frost on the inside and outside of my tent. Only just stayed warm enough throughout the night… I’m so glad the weather is turning warmer now, finally!.. I really enjoy tarp camping in the rain. I always pitch my 7x9 tarp A-frame style but may experiment with other pitches this year. Just being out there in a minimal setup listening to the pitter-patter of the rain on the tarp is so relaxing. It can be exciting if you are lucky enough to catch a T-Storms. I'm going to look into that little firebox you had. That would be fun and less impact than a fire ring

  • @GoingSoloOutdoors

    If I had to get rid of all my camping shelters and pick only one setup … I would probably pick this setup with just a tarp and a bivvy. Probably the most versatile. An A-frame is a great configuration also. I typically use this tipi when it’s raining and the winds are constantly changing directions. As seen in the video the condensation can be bad though but the bivvy takes care of those concerns! I do miss not have thunder storms here in the UK. We use to get them all the time back in the states. It’s great. As for the firebox I would highly recommend one. The firebox and bushbox are both fantastic options. Thanks as always for watching and taking the time to comment!

    A not-dissimilar camp to the one I had recently, possibly on the same night - breezy, then showery, then icey. I very nearly went for DD Superlight tarptent and Bushbox/TJM anchor too - but went MSR tent and Trangia in the end. A shame about the downpours as I know you were really looking forward to a more open fireside experience, but it looks as if you had enough moments of that later in the night to keep you more than happy. Mouthwatering food as always! You are increasingly like the BBC of wild camping vids - you inform, educate and entertain. Wherever (and whenever) you manage a filmed camp next, I'm sure it will be a great watch. Cheers. Rich.

    It did make it a bit difficult to film having to keep stoping and getting under the tarp every time a heavy band of rain came through but at least the showers would move through quickly each time. Benefit of all that wind I suppose! I was very happy that after my meal I was able to get in an hour of time by the fire without getting rained on!! Nothing like sitting in a dark forest next to a warm fire. I enjoy camping in the Lakes and Snowdonia but I do miss not sitting by a fire on those camps. When I camp in the woods I usually don’t mention where I am because they are local woodlands and I am trying to keep my privacy. Some I have permission to camp in and I do not wish to potentially share the space with others. Or I am in a larger forest that I do not have permission to camp in but I respectfully do so and leave no trace. Part of the fun camping is finding your own spaces where you can be alone and enjoy the outdoors. It’s not always easy here in England but when you do those spaces become very special. Hope you understand. Appreciate the comment.

  • @GoingSoloOutdoors

    @GoingSoloOutdoors

    2 жыл бұрын

    Absolutely! In my experience, ventilation towards the top of the tent is best (helped with a nice breeze) and as much of the ground underneath you covered as possible is the key to helping prevent condensation. Especially when it’s cold out. But if it’s gonna happen it’s gonna happen 😄 best to just not worry about it, learn when to expect it and how it’s best to live with it. But keeping my sleeping bag dry is always a priority and that’s one of the main reasons I carry a bivvy! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!!!

    I mean no disrespect but pack weight is a personal preference that in most cases is determined by the type of trip. For instance, in this trip I am only hiking a couple miles to find a campsite. I am using a light bivvy and tarp as my shelter so I bring some heavier items to enhance my evening and cooking experience. Isn’t enjoying your time in the outdoors what it’s all about. If I am doing a longer hike I have ultralight Dyneema gear from companies like Zpacks. In my experience your body will let you know pretty quickly if you are carrying too much weight. On this trip I think it may look heavier than it actually is as I barely noticed the weight at all. But everyone is different! 2 minutes of rain and that was considered "camping in the rain"?

    🤣 and I only slept for less than a second in the video and it’s actually considered an overnight camp!!! Only kidding with. You may not be able to see the rain in the video when it’s not pouring but it starts when I am hiking in and is off an on until I’m actually sitting by the fire before bed. A good portion of camping in the rain can be pretty boring sometimes. For instance sitting under the tarp while it’s really coming down with rain. Sorry you didn’t enjoy the video but I appreciate you giving it a watch and taking the time to comment! All the best!

    @@GoingSoloOutdoors well its basically clickbait. A lot of people, such as myself, look for "camping in the rain" videos. So yeah, it was clickbait. What a bs way to get views

    @@NKdidit.24 that’s understandable. I will do a better job of capturing more of the rain from the tarp next time. But to be honest that’s how I would describe this camp because well … it was raining all afternoon/evening. It was the main reason I also setup the tarp tipi shelter. Probably the best for these kinds of conditions when you have blowing rain. If you’re interested in seeing me in the rain more I would suggest the mountain camping in heavy rain video. It rained for 14 hrs straight. You’ll get to see me hike in and out in it but for the majority of it you can only hear the rain as I’m stuck in the tent. Just curious as someone who is searching for rain videos what are you looking to see? Next time it’s raining I would like to focus on what the viewer is after. For instance how I keep dry? What I do while it’s raining? Or would you just like to see me kinda handing out under the tarp in the rain? I’m legitimately curious. Because I would like to make a video that everyone enjoys.

    @@NKdidit.24 love the fact that you are only interested in watching camps in constant heavy rain and are deeply disappointed if it sometimes stops 🤣. This may explain your unpleasant and confrontational demeanour as it sounds like depressing viewing. This is the UK, a very rainy country which in April is famous for 'April Showers' As such this was textbook weather that presents its own challenges. The video showed this realistically and usefully. Happy camping! 🌧

    @@CottonBud I suppose I could have shown me sitting around under the tarp a bit more but as you know I’ve been desperately trying to create a bit shorter of a video🤣! This comment legitimately made me go back and look at the video though. I tried to tell the viewer when it started raining as much as possible. But it is kinda hard to see the rain. Especially when I was filming with the GoPro. Oh well.

    I’m glad you asked this question. Not sure, I guess I was just feeling chatty on this trip but you are right. I did talk quite a bit. I guess I don’t realize sometimes when I’m filming that some of the scenes are just me talking. Especially when it’s raining off and on like it was on this trip. I’ll try to think about it a bit more next camp. Sorry if it ruined the video for you. I appreciate the feedback!
