When my brother broke up with his long-time girlfriend, I invited him over to Scotland, where I was studying, for some processing-time. We packed for a weekend in the highlands, hitting a couple of Munroes. Forecast was 2 days of glorious sun. At the peak of the first tip, about 6 hours away from the car, the weather changed rapidly - in 10 minutes we went from full summer to full-on hail, wind and mist, like on this video. Navigating by compass (pre-GPS), we made it 1000' down to a little flat area, where we raised the tent, crawled in and then proceeded to cook. Never in my life has food tasted so good. Followed by a whisky and then blissful sleep. There is simply nothing like being out in the weather, prepared. Next morning the sun was back up and we enjoyed our coffee with glorious views over the huge reservoir. Glorious trip.

Hey I was homeless for 12 years .I lived in a tent out in the woods , I had a carpet, a fold up table and a plastic dresser to keep my clothes in I cooked on a colman propane twist on burner.I had tubs to keep groceries, a cooler for ice now I am inside it was hard to accurate living indoors. All seasons. I'll be turning 70 years old on January 4th. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I was homeless before joining the military.The military won't help you untill you're homeless my friend told me after he got out he fell on bad times.He was homeless 3 weeks had to crash on my couch 3 weeks.Had he told them they would have put him at bottom of the list

Climbing into a shelter is one of the most primitive experiences. I still get the chills remembering when I was a kid settling in for the night in my grandparents tent.

I agree! I think that’s what I like the most about camping. Instead of worrying about the day-to-day stuff that may be happening in your life you just focus on the basic needs food, water, shelter. And when you climb into the tent once those primitive needs are met it’s just the best 😀👍. Thanks for the comment!

@@GoingSoloOutdoors Nope. You still have to go out into the elements and urinate/deficate. That is a major inconvenience to say the least.

I used to work in the mountains as a Gamekeeper and you have to be prepared for all weather at all times. My best friend was a thick wool jumper, Solway zipper Barbour jacket and my thumb stick. If you’re ever stuck on a mountain, follow the sheep tracks downhill. They generally take a sensible path and will inevitably take you to habitation.

Definitely always best to be prepared 👍. That’s great advice, the sheep paths are extremely helpful here in the lakes and in Snowdonia. I often follow them when I’m heading off trail to explore an area, either up or down the mountain. They’ve definitely led me to some nice spots. I also often follow the game trails when I do woodland camps. These animals are definitely experts of the terrain. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB

The microphone wind noise isn't a problem for me. It only adds to the true atmosphere of the scenes being portrayed and takes nothing away. Enormously better than any music you could use instead. Great video!

I'm in Argyll and Bute on the edge of the Lcoh Lomond and Trossxchs national park and I've a friend who's in the mountain rescue and he's had to rescue tourists half way up a Monroe in shorts and t-shirt in March!!! That is an absolute death wish. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best in the mountains imo

Thx for the reminder about the limitations of even a specialist mountain forecaste. There is a saying among climbers and hill walkers in Scotland that you must be prepared for challenging weather at any time of the year - so summer season just reduces the risk. In 2nd week of april this yr I knew that but chose to be lazy, make excuses, and not check MWIS and MountainForecaste. Afteral I am only going Ochill hills and 700m summit, which are north of edinburgh, not the Highlands and 2nd week April! I was caught in a snowstorm on summit all night that blocked all communications and made me think I may have to collapse the tent onto me and remain in place 2 or 3 days until it cleared. In fact the Jack wolfskin gossamer 1 tent held remarkably. My story is not to convey how great I was but rather how a 'make excuses attitude' about mountain fundamentals can lead to genuine hazard. Thx for posting. JMO.

I went on a school outing to the Ochills it was a beautiful day so the teachers walked us up Alva Glen when we got to the top is was raining the clouds had dropped below us we couldn’t see anything below us. We were stuck for four hours waiting for the rain to clear and a clear path beck down, When anyone says their going mountain climbing I’m gone never again will I climb any mountain knowing what can happen I never understand why people enjoy this but each to his own.

I think the first thing I said was look out for the midge fly because if caught in a fly blizzard the experience can be so shocking for a first timer young boy/girl that it leaves a mark that is not easily left behind. Perhaps as a school girl/boy you had one of those experiences for which you were vulnerable because it came too soon. I said to this young person not to try winter before 2 yrs of experience in the hope she would similarly not be confronted too early. Thanks so much for sharing. JMO.

It would be fun to do more multiday trips like this but as a dad with young kids it’s just not as feasible at the moment. One day I’d like to have a small place secluded in the middle of nowhere though.

Two friends of mine were hitch-hiking and hiking in sweden in the mid 80s. Bo Hilleberg took them in his car and after an hour of driving invited them to his house. In the end he gave them one of his first tunnel tents. The Hillebegr tents cost a lot, but are definitely worth the invested money.

Yeah it definitely presents its own challenges camping in these mountains. Having grown up camping in the Appalachians it’s definitely a bit different camping in the UK mountains but I’ve grown to really love it. Fortunately where I actually live in England I am surrounded by forests so I can still easily get my tree fix when I want 👍 Thanks for taking the time to comment!

OK, I'm not a hiker or camper, and my idea of roughing it is no room service, but I enjoy watching these kinds of videos /adventures. It always amazes me how many people do not scrimp on what I would consider luxeries in these situations. Where I would expect some kind of reconstituted survival ration food, you made gyros along with the fresh sauce and veggies along with all the spices made from scratch. Thanks for a great video.

I hiked the Laugavegur Trail with a pyramid tent for 4 days in the last September, and the conditions were similar. I came from a warm country, and my first trip ever more than a day, it was harsh. In the second part I remember saying that I will not return to Iceland again, when stood before the last bridge, I wished to bring my future family here again. A trip like this really puts things in perspective. On the one hand it forces you to deal with the basics, including the language of nature, which comes with its sincere beauty. On the other hand, I began to understand and appreciate the whole idea of being part of a community/civilization. Watching your video tingles that inner spot, I don’t know how to call it yet, for such an hikes more occasionally.

Thanks for sharing your story. What I like most about going for a hike and camp is that it forces you to be 100% present in the moment. As you said, you’re forced to think about the basic needs. Finding a suitable spot to spend the night, setting up your shelter, finding water, preparing a meal, staying warm, etc. It can make you appreciate the conveniences of life but often I look forward to the little escape from the stresses of daily life that it provides. Thanks! The trangia triangle actually lifts the stove high enough off the ground I have never had to worry about the heat underneath. It’s actually one of the reasons I like the stove so much! I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB

Maybe eight years ago my daughter, one brother and one sister rented a home in Hawkshead, just west and South of Ambleside. It was a killer two week trip. We drive all over Cumbria, up into Scotland and down the coast. Beautiful towns, friendly people and great weather.

Well done wonderful to see you making the effort to cook such yummy looking food. Please take care you can get 4 seasons in one day in the mountains. If you are heading for Scotland take plenty of layers in a dry bag extra socks hats and gloves. Always let mountain rescue know where you are going. Safe journey where ever you go.❤

I was kinda hoping for an evening outside the tent watching the sunset but I agree. Some of my most memorable trips have been when the weather isn’t the greatest! It’s pretty hard to beat the sound of rain falling on the tent 👍. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. ATB

I am in my 70's and have just discovered these wonderful camping videos. Especially the tiny wood stoves in the hot tent camping. Such a difference compared to the tent-only experiences of my younger days. I froze my butt off! So i sent a video to my husband and the stick-in-the-mud was not interested! So i guess I'll be living vicariously while snug in my bed.

Welcome to the channel. Hot tent camping requires a bit of extra gear but it is definitely unique and cozy way to spend a cold night out camping. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment.

I love these videos. I've walked up and down those hills and valleys since I was a kid. Some of the unprepared people we came across was insane. A few years ago and Chinese family of five went to check into hotel but was told it was too early, so they went out into the hills with all their luggage. Mountain Rescue was alerted when the hotel said they had gone out and not returned to check in. One lady was walking in high heels with a suitcase for goodness sakes. Another time, five Dutch guys in double denim got out a three door VW Golf and set off into the hills. Insane. With Cumbrian weather even if there is a heatwave, prepare for the worst as it can change in an instant and keep on changing through out the day.

The Lake District is incredible, but as you said, the weather can definitely be brutal. This wasn’t even that bad compared to some of the camps I’ve had up here. A pot of noodles is fantastic. Great video as always. This one reminded me of when I went up Snowdon, I should have had 18 Tent Pegs, but when I looked I had only 17, turns out i had left one of them on the kitchen table. It had actually fallen on the floor and was just out of sight behind the chair leg. If the legs of the chair had been thicker I probably would have seen it, but they are the really thin kind of chair legs, so yeah it made it impossible to see it. Anyway it almost ruined my trip, but I was able to Macgyver one of of a thick branch, by using my knife and making one end a sharp point. For a branch it worked very well, and stayed secure the whole night. Anyway long story short, the trip ended in success and I had a fantastic time.

It’s always fun to see the different kit that gets used in the different parts of the world. This kit varies quite a bit from the stuff I used back when I lived in the states. This tent in particular is fantastic in this environment but would be overkill where I used to camp back home. Where are you based? Appreciate you taking the time to comment!

@@GoingSoloOutdoors I live in Michigan , did a bit of packing here and Canada . Spent a month one year on isle royal , just spectacular views . I’ve wanted to hike the British isles but never could actualize any plan . My tent of choice was the eureka timberline , great little A frame . I currently have a Kelty , but it’s much to heavy to pack with . I could ramble on about my backing adventures from hours , bears , being charged by moose , having my tent being blown away in a storm , with me and gear inside ! But I’ll spare you . Anyway , nice to vicariously walk a little , thanks for sharing this . Best to ya . A No

Au contrarie, sir! I thought the wind, clouds, rain, hail… ok, not so much the hail, was the best part! Or a major contribution to the adventure. In reference to the hail, and if you haven’t already thought of it, might I suggest an inexpensive and nearly weightless pair of safety glasses. Can’t be damaging those peepers, you only get two of them babies! This is my first visit and video on your channel, and I enjoyed it immensely! What a meal you prepared! Were it I, and were I your age again, supper would likely be beef sticks and a Coors Light. Ok, I don’t drink anymore, but still… I tried to think of things I would do if it were me. A small book for after supper entertainment, a handmade leather journal for pre-bedtime thoughts, possibly a poem or song, and a small traveling watercolor set. A good pair of hiking footwear for traveling the Broken Ankle Rock Field mountains, yours looked pretty good. I really, really liked that tent! Might I ask where you got it? I was surprised that all you took fit into that pack! It appears a lot of thought and experience went into its’ preparation. And I would have planned for an extra day or two, if only to enjoy the sound of thunder and rain on my tent. Anyway, thanks for posting your video! For now, I will have to enjoy all you did vicariously!

Welcome to the channel. I have a pair of ski googles for winter camps in wind driven snow but I just don’t typically think to bring them on a July camp. In fact none of this weather was in the forecast aside from the wind. I always bring waterproofs because I know how unpredictable the conditions can be here but a pair of safety goggles definitely would have made things a bit more comfortable. Though, as you can see with a pack this size, space is limited. The tent I am using is the Hilleberg Nammatj 2. It’s an absolute beast of a tent for its size and weight. The perfect tent for these conditions. On most of these trips I would absolutely love to stay for another day but I have two young kids at home so I typically can only get out for single night trips. But I will take what I can get! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best!

When I was a kid !y whole family put up a big green army tent by a lake.and stayed all summer until school started. it was a great way to spend the summer. I loved the sound of rain hitting the tent. Great video!

I worked search and rescue on Mt Washing, NH, notorious for rapid and dramatic weather changes, also held the record for the highest surface wind speed recorded by a staffed weather station (recorded a wind speed of 231 miles per hour). Always bring the 10 essentials and pack so you can survive the night. Great video and beautiful mountains!

When I was much younger and living in NY I would travel to the White Mountains in NH for multiday trips. Beautiful area! I experienced some pretty wild weather there once as well and I wasn’t able to make it to one of the designated spots for camping on trail. My tent at the time wasn’t as adequate to deal with very strong winds but I was able to find some decent cover among the trees. Although, that was a pretty scary night hoping a tree wouldn’t fall on me 😅. Fortunately the wind speeds were nothing too crazy (231 mph🤯) just a bit too much for my tent. LOVE THAT TENT ❤️👍 YES LAMB IS THE BEST FOR THESE GREEK DISHES ...back in the 1970s&1980s all the Greek restaurants & diners made LAMB SOUVAKI...the best ... Nowadays unfortunately they only make Chicken souvlaki which does not taste the same.. you really need lamb to make it that authentic taste 👍

This made me think of a trip 2 friends from high school and I made in 1970 living in California. We got to the campsite set up the tent and a big storm rolled in. We were soaked the tent was leaking bad after about a hour of rain. We decided to head to a motel an hour away. I was never so wet in my life with clothes on lol. It would have not been bad but the rain was so cold. So sorry it was bad weather I know the feeling.

In the U.S. cheap, hooded rain ponchos are easy to find. They come folded into small light weight packets. We usually bring a few extra on our trips to hand out to the unprepared, lol. Great vid! 😃

Really appreciate that feedback! I wasn’t sure if my stream of consciousness dialogue would get annoying sometimes to the viewer. I figure in the future when I’m maybe not able to do this anymore it would be kinda nice to look back and see what I was thinking on one of these trips 👍

I did some determined searching for a wild camping channel I hadn`t seen yet, and I definitely lucked out! No `walking back for the camera` shots, no teeth brushing demonstration (they kill it for me). I basically loved your style, commentary, camera work, everything really. You know your stuff and that`s a fact. I knew that when you changed tents at the forecast, then confirmed when I saw the Delta peg on your main guy rope. The Nammatj is heavy-ish, but for one or two nights, who cares. The amazing meal even has me considering trying a change from my usual boil in the bag. I have to give you a solid 10/10, and after 45 years on the hills, I am PICKY ;)

Really appreciate the positive review! Glad you found my channel. I agree, the Nammatj is as heavy as I’d like to go for a solo trip but I definitely find it worth the weight for a night or two. Especially when the weather isn’t the best and I’m stuck in the tent for a while. I usually try to offset the weight by bringing a lighter cooking setup. The delta pegs are great! I didn’t actually discover them until I moved to England. A boil in the bag meal is definitely much lighter and more convenient but I really enjoy cooking. It gives me something to do at camp. The reward when it’s finished is always nice. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend! ATB

Immensely fun, (even comforting) video. Thanks for letting us tag-along. If you place small cuts in the leftover lemon peels, turning them inside out, rub them on skin: hands, back of hands, arms, feet, etc. they’re rich in antioxidants which detoxify and clean the skin to a great extent. Bacteria managed. And the ‘lemon bits’ just slough away. You’re a good tent-chef, your food is remarkably aesthetically pleasing, and you have beautiful hands.

Looks a really good tent, i often use a Wild Country Laser for low weight and pack size, but cooking and organising kit inside in bad weather isnt fun. Real value in being able to sit up properly for cooking and getting changed... Especially when on a sea kayak expedition. I am stunned by the quality of your cooking. I wish i had that level if enthusiasm for fine dining when camping!

this is what I noticed the most. I have camped in many remote places here in Australia and my effort in meal prep and cooking is nowhere near this level! I'm looking at the stuff here for it's weight in the pack and thinking lemon, tomato, onion... but each to their own for sure and that is one of the beautiful simplicities about camping in the wild and food - each meal can become much more of a ritual, you seem to have more time out there without the pressures of civilisation. I couldn't camp anywhere without my Nanopresso for a proper shot of espresso and steamed milk, we all have our vices😁

It never stops raining in England, if you guys want to get wet come to England...😮 I remember when i used to camp in the lakes, the most useful items of clothing was your anorak, wooly hat and good boots. I once spent three days solid in my tent due to snow and ice. Bangers and Beans for breakfast you can't beat them... 😊 Thanks for the video, very entertaining. 👍

Thanks! Always fun to come to the Lakes but I will definitely never underestimate what the weather is capable of in places like this. Back when I was a kid my dad and I would hike Pikes Peak (4300 meters), in the Rockies. Every single time we would hike it, without fail the mountain would generate a storm at the end of the day. Eventually when I get a website up and running I plan to share each recipe from my camps on that space 👍. I normally just cook by taste, so I really need to make a better effort measuring the ingredients. Appreciate the comment! Hope you have a nice weekend

Enjoyed your video very much. Your food looked Delicious 😋. Something I would definitely enjoy making. This was the second video of yours that I have watched. It reminds me of Paul Messner's early videos in the hill district. The Trangia Triangle and of course that unpredictable hill district weather. It all worked out well, I love seeing these kind of wild camps. The views are spectacular up there. Now you have me hooked on your channel since I have followed Paul's adventures for many years now. Yes, my kind of hiking and camp.

Although I was kinda hoping for an evening with a nice sunset I still really enjoy how unpredictable places like the Lake District can be. It’s nice to be reminded that Mother Nature really doesn’t care what your plans are and you just have to adapt to what you are dealt. I’ve really enjoyed Paul’s videos as well over the years along with many other KZreadrs. I use to actually watch him when I lived in the states so it’s kind of nice to be able to travel to all these places now that I live in the UK! Really happy you are liking my videos! The support is really appreciated 🙏😀!
