Solo Backcountry Camping in a Thunderstorm - Bushcraft Against the Elements

Ойын-сауық

I go on a solo overnight camping trip in the Canadian backcountry and end up battling the elements as a thunderstorm rolls through bringing heavy rain and close lightening.
Chapter One - Day One, Alone Under the Storming Skies:
My arrival to the woods was met with a bright warm sunrise, birds chirping, and open skies. After hiking around the area for a few hours, Comet and I finally decided on a spot to make our camp. I chose what I believe was an extremely old log landing, which bordered a large swamp. It was open, full of grass and flowers, and hidden away in the deep woods. After checking out the area and finding a few interesting things like an old trap-line, and remains of an old shelter likely made by the trap-line's owner, I decided to start work on my camp. I cut some poles, and threw together a nice tarp shelter. I used some tripods and a ridge pole to give it the structure it needed to withstand the storm that was about to hit. Luckily, just after I had the tarp up, fire pit ready, and my bed, tools, and gear safely away, the storm arrived. It brought wind, a downpour of rain, and lots of thunder and lightening that was a bit too close for my comfort. After a break in the storm, I decided to start working on getting a fire lit. I gathered some supplies to get the fire ready, and used the stacking method with a lighter to get it started. Well the fire was burning down, I went to the nearby creek to fill up my water bottle, as I'd need the water to cook the pasta I was planning to make for dinner. When I arrived back at camp, I made dinner, and Comet and I ate as we enjoyed our time relaxing by the fire and listening to the rain and thunder in the distance. The rain continued well into the night, and after setting up my father's candle lantern and doing a few other things off camera, I decided to call it in early, and get to sleep.
Chapter Two - Day Two, The Breaking of Camp:
The next morning I awoke to pouring rain and wind, which thankfully let up as the sun broke through the clouds, making way for a beautiful day. The first thing I decided to get done was the fire. I once again gathered materials to get it started, and lit it using the stacking method with a lighter. After the fire was nice and hot, I began cooking breakfast. This time I cooked some oatmeal, and some coffee off camera that unfortunately didn't turn out due to my percolator being clogged. After Comet and I ate our breakfast, I relaxed and enjoyed a few hours of the day cleaning my rifle, sharpening some tools, and checking out more of the surrounding area. Once it was time to get going, I packed up my bed, and took apart my tarp shelter, setting the wood I used to create it aside for a later date. After that was done, I made sure my fire was out by pouring what was left of my water on it, and stomping what embers I could see into dust. I also left the fire ring intact for a later date. Once everything was packed and ready to go, I put Comet's saddle bags on her, and threw my frame pack onto myself, and we hiked the long way back out of the woods, concluding our short trip in the Canadian backcountry.
Enjoy the silent adventure!

    Without saying a word, you have a remarkable ability to demonstrate techniques (like your construction of your tarp setup) and transport viewers into your experience by cutting to beautiful shots of wildflowers and the sight and sound of rain hitting the tarp. I swear I could smell the food. Really great video Nicholas.

    Thank you! It's something I work on constantly. It's an issue I noticed with most other "silent bushcrafters", they don't really show a story, rather they just jump around to random things they're doing. It seems to work for them though, so maybe I'm doing it wrong? Who knows haha

    Enjoy the full video! A lot of work is put into these longer videos, so if you could drop a like if you enjoyed it and remember to share it, it'd be greatly appreciated! I've also changed a lot of the aspects about how I produce my videos. I specifically am trying to make the videos more engaging by trying different editing techniques as well as separating the trailer and the video to make it more straight to the point. Your feedback is important for me to know what works and what doesn't, so if you could comment some feedback on what you liked and didn't like about this video, it'd be greatly appreciated! It's important for me to know what you thought. If you missed it, there was a separate cinematic trailer released two days before this video. If you'd like to check it out, click here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKGd0aVvYdSriqw.html Thanks everyone! -Nicholas

    Great video as always, editing and cinematography is top notch. Its obvious you have an "eye" for getting the right angles. Your ability to tell the story without words is what holds people's attention so well I think. We want to SEE where its going. As a side note, I'm curious do you carry a lockback in the pouch beside your fixed blade? I like vintage Schrade LB7'S, but usually carry a Great Eastern Cutlery 44 gunstock jack slipjoint beside my Falkniven frej. The GEC is on my belt daily in addition to any other pocket knife I'm carrying. Keep up the great work, always looking forward to new things from you.🤠👍

    Thank you!! I carry a lighter and my ferro-rod in that pouch. I tend to not carry a jackknife unless I'm at my wall tent camp and am cooking. Aside from that, the fixed blade does everything :). Thanks for watching!

    good vid bud. Nice to see some other Canadian guys out there in the rockies (They are also my stomping grounds). I'm curious about your protocol with storing food and the likes out there with bears, I've always cooked and stored my food away from my camp but I've noticed quite a few guy cooking in their camp and I'm considering it myself as it is super inconvenient to do so unless you've built up a cooking camp in the area. One thing feedback wise is that I think that the 30 minutes and under videos are best, especially for younger guys like me with short attention spans.

  • @wituikbws

    @wituikbws

    Thanks! I love it out here. I don't see myself ever leaving haha. I generally don't worry about bears when I'm cooking in camp, unless I'm in grizzly country. I usually always have the dog with me, and then the rifle and bear spray an arms length away. I wouldn't imagine a bear would be all to interested in a loud human and a smelly dog, even if there was food in the mix haha. Thanks for the feedback though! I'll take that into consideration :)

    Ask away! I have no problem in answer questions. This video was extremely limited on what I felt comfortable doing in the storm. I wasn't too keen on walking around the open area with the lightening so close, and the rain is always a worry as well since my camera isn't weather sealed. That's why it was missing so much content! The next camping video to come out is going to hit a lot of those marks, for example; foraging, camp cooking, carving, and there was some fishing but unfortunately it wasn't filmed, but I do have other videos with fishing in them! Hunting as well.

It would take some getting use to for me- as there are eyes in them woods. ( I see the rifle, but I'd have it in both hands all night). Nice video, thanks for sharing.

    I'm excited for winter camping as well! I don't mind it at all anymore. I actually had something in the bush behind my camping well I was eating, I think it was just a mule deer trying to pass by though. I have the rifle, bearspray, and my alarm dog, and generally whatever is out there wouldn't want to come by a camp with a smelly dog and a loud human :)

    Lok-y Musik She is my girlfriend! Sorry I missed that part. Her name is Marie! I believe where Rune bases what he does around Vikings and Scandinavian heritage, I base mine around north American cowboy/pioneer heritage. That heritage is still very much alive here, but I’m certainly not Amish though haha! Canada is settled now, but the mass majority of it is still pure wilderness, most of which is only accessible by the saddle and pack horse, or by bush plane.

    Theres no need to talk to much about of your girlfriend :) A friendship and a relationship can be equal :) its all on communication :) ure a lucky man and i def. think u know this :) I didnt knew that you weren't an Armish... but your Clothes tells me an other way :) but it fits to you - you may shouldn change that :) To Rune ... we'll i'm jealused that i'm not you ... cause if I would do what u did ... I would be sooner in Prison that I could spell fire .... well...in my Country... plus we have a very small amount of Forest in my nearest location... so my only oppurtinity to learn from a recently woodsman... is to watch Videos like yours ... please forgive me my "recently" english :D

    It's likely that you just haven't noticed the differences yet. For example, look up an Amish man on Google images. There aren't much similarities, aside from a felt hat which is common place in Western society, no matter what religion you are. I dress like a pretty standard fair western Canadian. I'm sorry to hear that about your country though. I've had a few German people mention the laws being harsh there. I find it pretty ridiculous they'd actually ban such a thing. I hope my videos help you out though!

  • @wituikbws

    @wituikbws

    4 жыл бұрын

    Richard Macyczko Thanks! It’s not cocked however, it’s half cocked, which is a safety feature on almost all firearms with a hammer. It’s the safest and most effective way to store a chambered lever gun. Regardless, I don’t keep a round in the chamber, so having it half cocked is kind of pointless but I do it anyways out of good habit 👍👍

    I think the same would apply for cocking the hammer or even shouldering the rifle at that point though. With practice I've been able to go from a trail carry with the chamber empty to 6 rounds down range in under 2 seconds, but I have no idea on the accuracy I'd have trying to shoot that fast. It'd probably be all over the place haha. I use snapcaps to practice transitioning and such :)

    I like the editing and how you are telling your story. The sounds of nature and you walking through the woods is great. One thing that spins my head is seeing a guy present himself as a bushcrafter with an 1880’s theme then light his fire or candle with a modern lighter. If you cannot get matches in Canada please send me your address. I will send you a buttload of authentic wood matches. Otherwise top notch
