Solo Bushcraft Overnighter in the Chilcotin Backcountry - Stake-less Tarp Shelter, Wild Game Cooking
Ойын-сауық
Watch my latest video here: • Solo Bushcraft & Winte...
On this trip, I head off on my first solo camping trip in the Chilcotin, a region of British Columbia I recently moved to.
I started my trip with a short hike into the back country. I ended up choosing to pitch my camp on a cliff face over looking a large muskeg with a great view of the local mountains. Throughout the trip, I got some much needed practice in on my basic wilderness skills since it had been such a long time since my last bush trip. I set up a stake-less tarp shelter, made a fire with some local materials, did some camp cooking with some of last fall's Canadian Goose legs, and a lot more - but I most importantly spent the time relaxing in the camp, and enjoying the new views of the northern Chilcotin.
Sorry for the wind in the middle of the video! I am working on getting equipment to minimize it.
Enjoy the silent adventure!

Great vid! Your content is AMAZING ♥️ One thing I would personally love is if you talked. Would be like sharing the experience with a mate. I know others like the silent styles, but that's my two cents (esp during the insolation covid craze).

Great video! This is my first view of your channel. I subscribed. That was really interesting how you set up your tarp. Rock anchors with toggles and the 2 sticks. I’ve been tarp camping a long time and I’ve only seen the use of rock anchors like that a couple of times. Usually where you can’t drive a stake. Great job. Thank you. I’ll be back for more.

This is the best solo campers channel I’ve seen. Spectacular editing. Love the gear too!
I find myself so alone these days and trapped. This is the freedom I need for my soul. My friends are all dead and gone and I can still walk and get about really well. I know that being alone isn't lonely and that being alone in the wilderness is the least lonely thing/place I've ever been. Thank you for letting us be a part of it.

Enjoyed the campout. Other than the wind/breezes that are frequent for open areas, that looked like a great place to camp and view the surrounding area.

I'm glad you enjoyed! I don't think I'd camp there again due to the wind, especially now with how dry it is out already. It was nice to have that view though. Thanks for watching! :)

That's how you make cowboy coffee... after boiling, pour a little cold water on top and the grounds will settle to the bottom for a clean pour. Looked like a great overnight. Peace from Arizona.

I flat-out refuse to drink coffee any other way. It always too acidic and sometimes borderline gross, but when it's boiled, might as well be drinking black gold haha. I do the cold water trick to settle the grounds - just didn't bother to show it, but thanks for spreading the knowledge! It's surprising how much people don't know that trick. Thanks for watching!
Nothing to dislike. What an awesome setting you picked. Living the dream, as many of us would like. Enjoy

I'm really happy to hear that! I spent the last few months really focusing on how I film and edit, and getting rid of what's unnecessary with the hopes of making the videos more engaging. The new camera helps too I'm sure haha! Thanks for watching! I plan to do a lot more filming now that I've moved :)
I was thinking about watching a video if yours just the other day. It’s been a while or I haven’t gotten a notice from KZread lately. Good to see you out and enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Thanks for sharing the video and look forward to the next one already. ATB

Worth waiting for. Your a lucky man, beautiful country.
That is some fine looking country. Excellent camp. Thanks for the video.
I doubt you're still watching comments to this video, but just in case! Here goes... What were those chunky, rock looking things you used to start your fire with on the 2nd day, morning? You melted snow and made coffee with the fire. I didn't recognize what you pulled out of that tin. Then you just layed two strike anywhere matches on the "chunks". I will echo everyone's comments, your videos are great quality and thanks for the silence. I'm sure you have wonderful things to say and talk about. But I am truly so very tired of people explaining that I need to like and comment...and please subscribe...yada yada yada. EVERY SINGLE VIDEO!!!!! You are a breath of fresh air. Thanks

Those were chunks of pine/spruce pitch, which I laid the match on top of. The matches wick the pitch up essentially making a candle prolonging the flame. It's one of my favourite fire-starting tricks here, since we don't have any birch bark. Glad to hear you enjoyed my videos, make sure to check out the newer ones - they're a lot better!

Hey mate, just stumbled on your video... nicely done. First one I have seen. Where I come in Queensland, Australia i would have 101 creepy crawlings with me, if I slept like that. Very jealous of your backyard mate. And maybe just spend a couple minutes at the end of the video just going through your ups and downs of the trip.

First of your video's that I have seen. Really enjoyed it! Beautiful country! Wow! A couple things---finally, someone makes cowboy coffee the "proper" way, and, I believe you are carrying a Marlin 1895, and from the glimpse of your slide-cartridge holder, I'm betting 45-70? Sweet!!! A friend here still hunts Elk with one. Hell, the coffee and the Marlin alone won me over!!! 👍 Subscribed from Colorado. Be well! Roger

Loved the trick of holding the saw with your legs and moving the wood. Holding down the tarp, maybe just tie it to to the rocks with cordage and no sticks, or prop the rocks over and in front of the stick, instead of over and behind... it would put more resistance on the stick I think.

Just finished watching this for the second time. I developed quite a curiosity about the "Chilcotin" while reading "Grass Beyond The Mountains". As I watched this earlier this morning, I couldn't help but wonder if you cut the same tracks as "Panhandle", "Hobson", and the rest of the crew. Take it easy Cowboy. Be safe. Roger

I often wonder the exact same thing while out roaming around in the bush. I know I have cut their trail without a doubt while actually in Anahim, since nothing has really changed since the 30's, but I'm not sure about the bush. I'm always towards the west, just out of preference, and Rich and Pan had their eyes set towards the north east. That muskeg/creek seen in this video actually drains directly into Nimpo Lake, which is an interesting fact. It's likely that cayuse was up and down the same muskeg grazing the slough-grass back in the day. You take it easy as well! :)
