got an RG100ES about a month ago, put a 10 band eq in the loop and a tube screamer in front and it’s honestly everything i’ve ever wanted from a guitar tone as well as it flawlessly looking badass playing death, anthrax and pantera through it sounds killer

You outta try it with a Boss SD-1 if you get the chance! You can set the leve to around 50 or max, gain at 0, and the tone wherever you feel it makes it sound the best and it really tightens the amp up while keeping the dynamic character intact. Really cool trick and i’m surprised more people haven’t tried it, yet.

It sounds almost dead-on "Kill 'Em All"... which makes sense, since Hetfield has stated he used a RAT as a boost back then.

A great example that a "scooped" tone can work well if done with clear precision and intent. There's such a gulf between an amp with the mids at 0 vs. a dedicated EQ trimming & balancing the mids

ALL THE GAIN! NO MIDS!! SLAY....wait wrong channel These tones take me back to my early childhood playing Doom with my dad while he listens to all the 80s metal loud enough to wake the dead. All of these tones are firmly in the "Harsh on their own, brilliant in context" camp. Chuck some bass at it and make sure your drummer had their stimulant of choice and suddenly all is right in the world.

The Walrus Audio Iron Horse V3 actually fixes that volume drop that RATs have when the distortion is at minimum setting. Plus it has the pot to blend between Si and LED clipping diodes. Back to the topic of SS gain amps being sleepers for Thrash, they're also underrated for Hardcore too. For example, everyone associates the Ampeg SS-140c/150 for death metal tones. However, it was also greatly utilized by Keith Huckins and Nick Forté for Rorschach's album "Protestant" (super influential record for Metalcore and Mathcore bands).

Can confirm, Hardcore is the territory i tend to stay in when it comes to playing heavy music and solid state amps give you a very massive, very tight sound that gives room for the bass guitar and the drums to breathe. I swap between a Randall RG3003 & an Orange Crush Pro 120 with a graphic EQ in the FX Loop of both amps. The Graphic EQ quite literally makes the amps sound a lot closer to a tube amp in terms of how the EQ helps shape the tone of a solid state amp after the preamp section. More specifically, I’ve noticed that a graphic EQ seems to have a similar effect that power tubes have on shaping the tone after the preamp section on a tube amp, only with a Graphic EQ you have a lot more tonal flexibility and can shape the tone after the preamp however you wish. However, because the saturation of gain from a solid state amp happens specifically in the preamp section, it also means that you’ll have to use different types of gear in order to help tighten up the amplifier you’re playing through, especially if you’re playing through an amp with a ton of gain on tap as it is like the Randall RG3003. I’ve especially noticed through not only my own personal experience but from several other players who have experimented with different pedals to get similar results that using a clean midrange boost pedal that doesn’t add any excess gain but instead acts as a level boost not only tightens up the amp in a similar manor to how a tube screamer tightens up a tube amp, but certain clean boost pedals give you a lot more tonal versatility as a lot of clean boost pedals seem to have a 2 band pats EQ for bass and treble. I myself am planning on trying to snag a TC Electronics Spark booster sometime in the near future so I can see how close I’d be able to get to a pedal like a TC Integrated Preamp without having to shuck out the money for an exact clone.

I have a Randall RG1503 that gets almost no play time because it’s so easy to dial in tones in my Helix LT. But nothing in Helix has that old school vibe that the Randall does. The Precision Drive is my favorite pedal to pair with it. It has the flexibility to get anywhere in between my SD1 and Fortin Grind and push it harder than the former.

I bought a Randall rg100 20 years ago for 2 reasons, because Dime used one on early Pantera albums, and because I found one online at a clearance sale for only $200. The clean channel was a bit stale, but the drive channel was great. Even with the gain on zero it had some crunch to it. I gigged with mine for several years, also for more versatility would go guitar into line 6 pod into effects return and just use the Randall's power section.

I used to play only solid state amps, and the only problems I ever found with any solid state was being drowned out by a tube amp on stage. If you don't use them just right if your other guitarist has a tube amp, yours is very hard to hear. You can make some of them sound very nice though with the right pedals and setup as long as your 2nd is not playing some 100watt tube amp cranked where your amp cannot then cut through the mix well.

If you're a man willing to take suggestions, you should take a plain jane Fender Frontman 15g practice amp, disconnect the internal speaker, wire a female jack on the leads, and hook it up to a 4x12. Thrash heaven with an overdrive. The name says 15g, but the backplate clearly says 38w output. Crazy cheap sleeper at a whopping $20 at every used gear store ever. I fool around with one through a fryette power station and it would put some big boy amps to shame. Big fan of the channel btw
