I gigged with a Randall rg80 for 15 years. I discovered this amp in a shop in 1983. I was on a low budget and it was used and he was selling it cheap. Went home and plugged it in and pulled out the treble button and Wallah the greatest sound I've ever heard. My friend used to use it on stage. He would put it behind his Marshall. That's been my tone for almost 40 years. Damn I can't believe it's been that long.

The SM7B definitely helps capture the "in the room" sound of a cab even when close miked. I'm convinced a lot of people are doctoring their demos with layers of EQ and stereo imaging manipulation as well, but that's a can of worms for another day.

It depends on your tonal preference really. The 7B isnt nearly as shrill as the 57 or suffer from proximity effect as much, but it doesnt poke out in a mix as easily. If you need a vocal mic too though, I would opt for a used 7B before I bought two inferior mics for guitar cabs and vox.

The on-off-on power switch was used before three-prong power cords were mandated by UL. When the three-prong cords were added after the fact, the technician would simply rewire the switch so that both on's were identical. Soon such on-off-on switches simply disappeared. The three-prong cord was a much safer path. TThe circuit was quite sophisticated when it was first designed in the late sixties, and it was slowly evolved with slight but significant improvements over time. It was conceived as a Fender sound with less crunch or grind. Country musicians often preferred Randall to Fender because they didn't want any crunch or grind in their sound. They wanted clean, clean, clean. Used in that way, the circuit is impressively quiet. The distortion switch on one channel was a trick to cater to hard rock players. See Johan Segeborn's demo of the Randall Commander combo amp to hear how good the circuit really is for its intended purpose. The power amp circuit is interesting to analyze. The designer split the feedback path into two paths. One path for AC or music and the other path for DC. This also greatly reduced the damping factor to more faithfully sound like a tube amp for guitar. The original was a reliable circuit, though it did not use current limiting. The dual feedback mod offered a side-effect of current limiting when it was added later. The designer used transistors identical to the outputs to serve as driver transistors by adding another current gain stage. There was only the slightest reduction in current draw for the added driver stage. I believe it was a fix for the lack of high-gain power transistors. It must have improved reliability and clarity at high volume or heavy load. It was clever engineering.

I have taken apart a lot of these amps. One reason, besides no fragile tubes, that it's so tough is that the actual amp only takes up a small section of the Marshall style cabinet it's in. It's like having a big box protecting a small box within it. These are also very easy to troubleshoot and fix if something breaks or malfunctions.

All you're missing is the Furman PQ-3 equalizer. Dimebag used it mostly in front of the Randall (the PQ-3 is also a preamp, sort of), sometimes he used it in the loop. This amp was co-designed by George Lynch (if I remember correctly, he definitely did the ES-80...). I had two of these in stereo, with the snakeskin tolex and the Jaguar soeakers. The 4x12 cabs had eack speaker in its own chamber. Super heavy. The pull-pot is cool at low volumes... the more you turn the amp up, the less impact the pull pot will have. Anyways, your vid brought back some memories! Cheers!

Yep I had one of those heads , too - ran stereo with a 4 x12 Celestion cab and a Roland jc 120 for cleans. Played a Fender HM Strat. Playing original rock in L.A./Hollywood. A la Van Halen 1984, Def Leppard Pyromania, Bon Jovi Slippery sound. With Eric Johnson /George Lynch shred leads. 2 guitars. Bought a Digitech Twin Tube and midi pedal - ran a Hendrix wah and Volume pedal. Got an offer to join a top tier cover band with a good booking agent. (GMA) Played 17 cities and towns with them. Hopped out, came home. Got the cover gig bug. Joined another band, went to Canada and played another dozen towns, came back to L.A. Had a storage locker sale and never looked back. It's been a wild ride, PSS. Bought a Kustom combo amp. (James Brown designed) Played 100's of jam nights in L.A. Pre covid. 2013-2019. 6 years of L.A. awesomeness. Gonna start a cheap gear channel next. Cheers, mate!.

A lot of the critical commentary I hear about this head or solid state in general comes from people using multi layered, computer processed , plug in generated tones. First off I love your videos, you do know what your talking about and very detailed to the point, which is a rare thing these days as far as KZread videos, that being said... I have owned the Randall RG100,- XP head, a friend bought it for $50 off Craigslist or something, which was unbelievable , H he drove 4 hrs one-way, so I obviously didn't pay anywhere close to that but $250. ... Because of Dime , it's has the extra power sold separately pedal built in it, and they were expensive, George Lynch and Randall was behind the RG 100, made for George, the pedal solved the volume drop on the gain pull switch, I absolutely love the thing, ungodly loud, it's just as loud as my Engl Blackmore, and your right it is a One trick pony, it has the awesome metal eqing built in core, the reverb is ok especially if you don't have reverb, anyways the only reason for my comment is the idea of removing the reverb knob function on it and replace it with a high mid sweep in it, to work in conjunction with the presence knob, high end sweeting , because it does have deafening treble/high-end, and it's fine like it is but I think that would really benefit the amp, it might make it more versatile, the notes have hair like sound which is the beauty of that sound, just a thought..... Keep up the great videos...!

I bought the carpeted version brand new, still have it. It's cool for lower volume, when the master volume gets past maybe 10:00 the EQ changes and it sounds like it's coming out of a cardboard box. I remember reading Dime saying he couldnt stand the sound turned up beyo nd that level either, so he just added more stacks to move more air. I bought an early 5150 to solve the problem. But it was a really fun "home practice stack" at lower volume.

Dimebag used two (2) EQs in front of the amp: first, a Furman PQ-4, then an MXR 6-Band. Boosting the shit out of the mids and highs, cutting bass and low mids, cranking the volumes on the Furman (the older MXR EQs didn't seem to have any gains). He used an over-glorified Tube Screamer system to get those raunchy-ass distortions but by Christ did those tones make history Edit: 21:14 *fuck yeah*

I know i am a little late to the conversation, but you talking about using both channels at once reminded me of something. I used to have a quad pre amp, i dont remember how I found out, or if is just general knowledge, but if you had the FU2 footswitch, you could also run both channels 1 and 2 at the same time, by hitting the switches simultaneously. I was a little too green at that time to know how to exploit that feature, and of course since i was a kid, so all I tried was running both lead channels at the same time, with results i am sure you could imagine.

The only way to describe it,like when I was telling my freind, it has its own kind of Growl tone even when the gain is not all that high & it makes playing lower gain heavy somehow because you can really wack the strings when u attack & it responds to the harder picking by sounding more growly. Not all saturated & fizzy, just Growly somehow.

It is refreshing not to hear that all-too-common static hash that accompanies so many high-gain demos on YT. Even with the Fortin pedal, the distortion here is dynamic and not static-sounding at all. I wish all amps behaved this way. It sucks to have high gain at the cost of adding loud white noise to the signal. I understand that clipping begets noise, but there's good dynamic noise and then there is just dead annoying hash.

He was a great musician who kept Heavy Metal music alive in the 90s when Grundge music ruled the 90s!!!!😁😄😃😄😊🙂

Hey there! I am not sure how interested you are going Dow the rabbit hole with this amp. I have, I have a rg80, rg100es, rg100ht, rgp1000 preamp with an rrm250 Randall poweramp. From what I have seen, no 2 Randall’s sound alike, they were all hand built, these amps have a bias pot. If you want to talk more let me know.

Jose Carbajal oh those are made in China, not much hand made going on there, I had an RM-100, you can see the circuit boards are assembled in a machine. Everything is perfect looking at the layout, every amp sounds the same too, same with the new rg-1003,1503,3003. But the good thing was all the US made stuff literally was still hand made, especially the tube amps

Also I forgot to mention, it makes an Awesome Poweramp going in effects loop, it still has the Metal core, the Poweramp is it's main source for that sound, I've plugged EVH Overdrive straight in, it sounds even better with a small eq behind EVH of course, honestly that's the main reason I hang on to it is because of the Poweramp, it competes with tube poweramps on volume and girth....ISP Decimator pedals sounds incredible, it colors those pedals with the Randall balls and growl, the growl is impossible to tame out, try out your AXE 8 thru it, it retains the lows and tightness....I also have to note.... I'm speaking on behalf on the XP model, I haven't played the one like you have, I only read that the XP pedal is needed to boost the volume of the pull gain, that's built in my XP.... Made on the last year.... Which I'm glad I got that one, they were on the the extra power, it says 80 or 100 watts on the back but it's more like 200 watts with XP pedal, I'd love to pick up the 80 watt very rare XP 1x12 combo, they are work horses, but they are old and need to stay still, maybe rehearsal gear , but at the end of the day, it's the Poweramp section on this amp that makes it addictive, mosvalve on steroids

They actually sound really good blended. They do a lot of good things for the pick attack/chop, while the sustained chords aren't so great (unless you like that Dimebag tone). White Zombie and Decapitated both blended these with valve amps on records.

I have an Ashton solid state amp that I'll never part with. I can get an absolutely killer thrash tone on the dist channel paired with a tube screamer. I loved to demo it for people without them knowing what amp I was using then would tell them it's an Ashton hahaha.. Astonishment

  • @neilpartyka4423

Try a tube screamer in front, reverb pedal and eq in the loop. Channel one is where AC/DC lives - full gain with a Gretsch. Also the amp's reverb adds some gain

I did notice the clean had a DI quality....or lack thereof. I've never even seen an RG100 in person of any variation, so super cool demo. And as far as SS clean sounds, I've heard nothing but LOVE for the hideous looking ISP Theta head....people say it's the best clean channel EVER. That might be a stretch, but it must be really good at the very least. My favorite Randall's are the ones made by Randall Smith TBH. Not sure if that counts though.

Do you possibly know what year it is? I'm trying to date it, but the previous listings of these without piping and the thinner horizontal shell walls/11screws aren't dated online. I've seen an 87 with the same shell, and found an original RG100es that sold with this same faceplate and knob types but no date on that.

I have an RG 125-212 combo, apparently the combo version of this head and operates the same way with the blendable channels. I agree not useful but a strange concept. I don't have the rare foot switch either. I lovingly refer to it as the giant MT-2 for its not so desirable tone as the naked amp but is an amazing dist/overdrive pedal platform using the clean channel into the front of the amp.

Paired with an almost new Peavey 4 12 cab with Celestions gt12 -75's (Yngwie etc) Oooooooh! an all time fave solid state amp. From mtw in L.A. Del Rey. Just curious PSS: are you based in LA too? Just curious. You might have enjoyed our jam nights. Cheers!

Played one once...it was SUPER loud and thunderous. Seriously, it was as loud as a Budda Superdrive 80 I played...like HiWatt LOUD...and BIG sounding. Would've bought it, but what the hell would I do with it? LOL! Have that amp gone through completely. Replace every electrolytic capacitor, transistor, and diode in that thing. Replace the mica spacers under the power transistors plus fresh thermal compound. Clean & lube all the pots, switches, and relays. Clean or replace all the jacks. You know...just do it right.

Actually picking this head up tomorrow for $300......carpeted too. It's missing the pedal of course and also the channel 2 master knob. Belonged to a rehearsal studio I first visited more than 3 years ago and always thought about buying it. I was impressed right away but I do agree that it's a one trick pony. I will say that I know you know your tones quite well but I plugged this in to a Marshall 1960 4x12 cab and it really sounded like a way better match than the cabinet in this video...hard to really know of course....anyway thanks for the video excited to add this to the arsenal.
