Solar Powered Aircraft in Kerbal Space Program 0.18

Ойындар

This one actually launches from a runway. The undercarriage weighs more than the rest of the aircraft, but will a tiny acceleration I can get it airborne and land smoothly, assuming the sun is high in the sky.

    I did something similar to this but it was much simpler. it consisted of 2 battery packs and xenon tanks, a mk.1 parachute at the front, obviously the ion engine in the back, 2 of the fancy pivoting winglets on the sides of the plane and 1 as a tail. the cockpit was the OKTO mk. 2 drone, 3 of the aerodynamic wheels and it had 6 solar panels. as long as the sun was up it could run at full capacity without burning out the engine, with about an hour of fuel. after 30 minutes at a steady incline it got to about 4km and it could probably glide just as long, it could reach relatively high speeds of about 110 m/s

    Scott, I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but I think the problem is that KSP is applying the normal logic for efficiency differences in atmosphere to the ion engine's electrical consumption (electricity is just fuel to KSP, after all), so it's consuming more power than it should. The "atmosphereCurve" parameter is in the part file (though I have no idea how it works), so that could explain your power loss. Also, I didn't know KSP had a trim feature; this will make flying so much easier...

    To get rid of the problem of the mass of the landing gear, i attached them to radial decouplers that just shot them off after takeoff or for a little boost to get off the ground. It works pretty well, you just have to be really really careful on landing.

    Scott, I think I may have discovered something awesome. I built a slightly more sleek looking one than yours with extra length wings. I noticed something very strange about it - it gains a whole load of speed when you bank about 90 degrees and pull up. It allows you to climb in a helix shape, while gaining speed at the same time :)

    Ion refers to the fact the engine polarizes the atoms of the gas and ejects them at high speeds to create thrust, a polarized atom is called an ion. many gases can be used in this type of reaction but xenon is the most common for it thus its in the game

    If you want lightweight landing gear, use the medium rover wheel (older brown one rather than the newer grey one). It weighs less and allows for taxiing on the ground. You just have a 60m/s limit for takeoffs and landings and dont want to come in too hard with them, doable though, I made a pretty big aircraft with B9 that could takeoff and land from the rover wheels fine and they do weigh less than the regular gear (not sure about drag though)

    If you get one of the launch clamps ( I don't think that's the right phrase) and attach one to the rear of the aircraft, then raise it as high as you can, you can start off in a shallow dive to accelerate and remove the need to have undercarriage. I discovered this when making a Bell X-1 tribute with an SRB

    It needs two things to fly: 1) Xenon gas 2) Sunlight You could potentially fly it in a way to maximize the amount of time you stay in sunlight, and add battery packs to help give you some extra time once the sunlight begins to fade, but you still have to carry enough xenon gas tanks to keep the engines running.

    I am VERY interested in crafts of this manor, I mean it's just so so so soooo efficient. I mean i can see a design like this begin extremely helpful as a lightweight, fuel efficient, reusable means of bringing fuel to lower orbit space stations. considering Ion engines don't have the limitation of air breathing engines, reaching a low orbit on Ion thrust and aerodynamic perfection even though each plane might only be able to carry a tiny amount of fuel at a time.

  • @Chosen1Creator
    @Chosen1Creator11 жыл бұрын

    I've had that same kind of thing happen to me. If you add a whole bunch of adjustable wings to a very light weight craft then hold down the W or S keys while on the runway, you will gain a lot of speed. I got a land speed of up to 600 m/s without any thrust, using just wings. Once you're in the air, rapidly pressing any of the directional keys will give it more speed. Once you have enough speed, tilt it upwards a little and make the craft roll. By rolling I am able to get up to 1000 m/s.

    Dubwell, this is KSP. A game where parachutes can effectively slow a lander down from interplanetary speeds to 7m/s. Ion engine inaccuracies are among the least notable unrealistic parts of ksp, but game physics derps is a big part of why ksp is awesome.

    Check out Solar Impulse's HB-SIA and HB-SIB solar aircraft. Both are designed to be fully manned by a pilot in the cockpit. The HB-SIA has already flown across the united states and has proved to be able to fly at night. It has a huge glide radius (40:1) so it can glide for about 340m as well. Currently the HB-SIB is being built to fly around the world, and the best part is that with a pilot range of 1,800km it's entirely possible.
