Using a Spaceplane as a Reusable Launch Vehicle in Kerbal Space Program 0.18
Ойындар
We've seen lots of videos of people putting planes in orbit in the past, but this one manages a complete launch profile, it gets into space, launches a space probe and then returns safely to a touchdown on Kerbin. The spaceprobe then performs a mission to the Mun. The only part of the spacecraft which isn't reusable is the clamp used to hold the payload on the back of the plane, this gets discarded.
This design is a heavily modified version of the Aeris 4A with the docking system removed and a completely redistributed tank system to help with the chronic spinout issues.

"Let's build an expensive, useless probe, just for the sake of a pun!" - Scott Kerman
I've been watching your series on Kerbal vehicle construction and it's freaking brilliant. I loved that I was enjoying actually learning a few things while learning to play a game. You've got an awesome mind. Thanks.
I recorded the commentary and after upload I realised I'd never said 'Nevermore' I almost considered doing some edits, but I was getting tired.
Now, that is what I call a successful hardware-assisted lithobrake.
Most entertaining YT channel I sub to. The commentary just makes it awesome; nothing is ever dumbed down, instead it's detailed and interesting. It helps that you do LP's of KSP which is probably one of the best ideas ever realised in gaming.
Wow Scott, I watch your videos for some months now, and I really appreciate them. You look really intelligent, your videos have really good quality, you explain all well, and you even answer lots of comments, even having many of them in your videos. Thank you so much for your videos, they really inspire me in what I want to do for my life and to help me in Kerbal Sapce Program.
Launched the raven never more
Awesome video! I love that you know what you're doing and can explain it very well, but you still make mistakes that we can all learn from.
Love how you know exactly whats going on whilst your Kerbal is clearly crapping himself the whole journey.

He might be a new recruit (the Kerble, that is.).
Dude, that was awesome. Nice work.
apparently The Algorithm gave its blessing to this random 9 year old scott manley vid. what a throwback! its easy to forget how used you get to ksp's new quality of life features!

No fairings back then.
When you enable RCS they're used to help you turn automatically. RCS also allows you to translate, that's what the extra keys are for, it's very useful for docking.
I think this is very fitting for the probe mission :) "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before."

***** puns are awesome. So is science.
RCS doesn't need fuel lines, you do however need to press 'R' to toggle RCS on and off.
I love how proud of himself he is for making the edgar allan probe joke. Never stop, Scott.
It's an i5-3570k - I suspect that the flashing is more to do with the fact that I'm also recording video and audio at the same time, and because the forces probably have stron ggradients.
Dangit! Stop being so awsome, it's making it impossible for the rest of us to keep up! ;) Seriously, very, very impressive, as always.
Yeah, I might download it sometime.
Awesome vids!
well you can use this to deploy satellites too, I merely chose the Mun because without that initial boost to the eliptical orbit the probe is unable to land on the Mun.
That's just too awesome. Gonna do it myself now, yay!
Scott, love your videos! I learn so much!!! I know it's not up to you, but I really think that the ground radar altimeter should be visible outside the cockpit. And for probes, maybe as an attachable instrument.
Scott, your "bad pun" actually made me chuckle a bit!
The videos length is 13:37 :D
The only thing better than a good pun is a terrible pun! Love your work Scott :-)
I love how the battery pack is just a giant version of off the shelf batteries!
You need it to have a command module - like a probe body.
only one man could use this amount of resources, time and effort to execute a space mission all for the sake of a pun. Thanks Scott, you're so Manley. (thought I'd join in on the puns)
scoot i must say i a huge troll but idk mad i cant help...it...i... i MUST WATCH THESE!!! XD thanks for takeing the time and makeing these every 1 loves ALL OF THEM! so keep it up man !! evry time i watch a video i learn a lil more and go back to work killin kerbals XD keep up the good work man
youre voice is so warm and friendly.... will you read me bedtime stories and comfort me after bad knee scrapes?
Edgar Allan Probe... Bravo, sir!
Hi Scott, you could use a docking port on the plane if you want it fully reusable, they can "decouple" items attached to them, so just stack the probe onto it and decouple :-)
It was clearly a matter of fate.
The Entire Concept... Was Built around a Terrible Pun... I'm loving this.
Scott, I know you've already done similar videos, but I'd be very interested in a "How to get effectively to Moho"-Video. I can get there, but I'd be interested in how to do it elegantly, that is, getting an encounter without orbiting for years. I've been using the "Olex" calculator, but due to Moho's eccentricity I still never get a reliable hit. I'd also be interested in some basic principles like "do I need to burn later or sooner if I end up behind my target planet?" Keep up the great work!
You sir are awesome
Hey Scott, to avoid having to hack the ASAS, you can put a tiny truss on the underside and attach the Avionics to that, like a goatee behind the front wheel.
HAHAHA, that intro earned you my sub. Epic voice.
the way I know is that you go into the tracking station and switch to the probe/ship whatever you want to use instead after decopling. but you need something to steer those part like a probe.
Is it flipping in pitch or in yaw? If it's pitching out of control then It's probably because the center of mass isn't far enough forward, this can happen after a successful flight because the burnt fuel was keeping the vehicle stable.
Huh, reminds me of that one spaceplane-only playthrough on the forums. Except, being a spaceplane only playthrough, they had to do this for *everything.*
I've watched how many of your videos these last couple of days? Why am i not subscribed! fixed.
Heh, I could use a lesson or two from you. Even though you made a mistake you were lucky enough to be able surface (Unlike me where I always faceplant or whatever). Great Job!
Wow, it didn't appear in my sub box :(. I'll go watch that now. Thanks :D
I wouldn't argue with Scott Manley, Astronomer, DJ, Hacker and Scotsman
after exploding a couple hundred times without any clue about WHY, my rc-plane self-training kicked in and it turns out the center of mass and lift are VERY important in KSP. in the rc world experts says something like this: "a nose-heavy plane flies only straight, a tail-heavy one flies only once." :) also, a design i never saw in anyone's video (and maybe there's a reason for this) is a plane with dihedral wings... it "should" stabilize the yaw automatically due to natural lift adjusting.
Scott, can you please make a video about how to land a re-usable spaceplane at KSC, because anyone can land at some point on land, but it's hard to choose where you land
Again the flip is probably due to the center of mass vs center of lift.
The stack separators are too large and would look stupid, we need a probe sized stack separator.
No, go into the 'Propulsion' tab in the VAB and select the small RCS fuel tank. (It will have yellow stripes on it)
That is the jammiest probe landing ever!
You could use the stack separators to decouple probes, this way the engine of the probe wouldn't be obstructed by the decoupler.
Good probe name Scott haha
You can use a docking clamp, especially a small docking clamp, as a reusable debris-free decoupler.
during vehicle assembly you click on action groups... then click on the desired custom number like 2, then click on the desired part you would like to action group to that number to toggle on or off or many other options..
I've made a few videos specificly on rocket construction for newbies, have you seen my Kerbal Space Program 101?
"Of Course the whole reason of this mission was to make that horrible pun" - Scott Manley endangering Kerbal kind since 2012 13:10
Edgar Allan Probe hahahaha :D
If it is further then 5km or "on rails" you must go to map view and double click the icon to switch to it. Alternatively you can select other craft from the tracking station.
Scotty! You cant change the laws of physics Captain! Sheell brerak up soon for sure!
eclipse on the darkside of the moon , now you got a pink floyd pun going
nice vid
I'm not sure if you realized this (Since i've never heard it mentioned anywhere) But on top of turning off your jet engines, close your intakes! For Ram airs, drag is reduced significantly (From 3 units to 0.3) And the radial guys, you lose about 0.5 units...This allowed me to put about 1 ton more fuel into orbit.
Aaah, broken is the golden landing leg. Let the bell toll, a manly soul floats on the Stygian river. Aaah Scot, hast thou no fear ? Wheep now, or nevermore !
I think you can. It's... tricky... but you could make a moveable crane that carries payload and fuel. You dock the payload to the plane, refuel through the dock, undock the crane and move it away. Then your plane is ready to go again.
i think it helped that, that separator was in between the soda can engine and the ground
Nothing compared to my Eeloo Spaceplane!! :-)
I like using it to help me automate the flight process for my space station I am building. I'm up to 16 kerbals on station and 2 deep space capable craft, 4 probes and 8 seperate sections of the space station. I'm planning to move it in to an orbit around the moon.
On my keyboard it's the key to the right of P, but I use a scandinavian keyboard layout, so yours might be different. Try hitting the key that is one key to the left and one key down/left from the backspace key.
i kinda think that with the maneuver node system, mechjeb isn't really needed anymore... except perhaps for its' readouts.
action groups. you can configure a key to toggle a series of engines on or off.
I gotta say, I hit "like" when you made that pun. I'm a sucker for silly puns...
That god damn decoupler at the bottom of the probe...
Scott, I'm not sure if you already have (im a new sub) but please please please make a huge space station which kerbals can move around in and many space ships docks :D
His name is Scott Manley, and he flew relatively safe!
Custom action group to shut the engine down. Set it up in the SPH before launching
You could fit a couple reactor modules, those will stop that reactor depleting.
I love scott, since he dosent really mess aroun in ksp
wow its kirbin then the sun/kun then the kilky way/milky way what a sight 13:01
Scott manley: Making puns go to the moon
If you make your plane balanced then you wont need to shift fuel! Try balancing the plane without fuel first then add the fuel and tweak to make sure the COM does not move!
by the way Edger Allan Probe gave me a good chuckle
Pretty cool your good
Yay, spaceplanes!
Huzzah for Ion Engines!
Could he possibly have a docking port on the underside of the plane with longer landing gear so that you could have a little car with fuel drive under the plane, dock the fuel tank, and then drive out? Seems like a great way to build a sort of dropship.
It is the very first part that makes up your craft.
Hey scott, since you seem to be into space and all have you ever tried out the game called "Universe Sandbox"?? its basically what its title is, you get to do whatever you want in a space simulator. So you could watch planets collide, suns swallow planets and the effects of it, and black holes absorbing each other. Its really neat and I think it would be cool just watching you have fun in it :P I dont know how scientifically correct it is but it is a simulator and its pretty fun :P
having similar issue when using jet engine I get to certain high where they stop working or shortly before that it goes out of control even if I activate rocket engines to get in to stable orbit. It just goes insane and wount stop until I drop in under 10 km
I wonder if you can use the Damned Robotics parts as an arm: put 4 jr. ports on payload and 1 on the arm to grab it.
The bracket keys :)
use the [ and ] keys to cycle targets in range (i think within 2.5km) Map to swap to things further away
Scott, I think a tutorial on building a SSTO like this is in high demand. Just a recommendation
Lol, are you ok, Nedbald? XD
i would apreciate that you make a lets play whit your goals like Scott Manley space program :)
Edgar Allen Probe, its a unique joke ;) i liked that little joke.
I think on the planet Kerbal, there is no death penalty, only form of capital punishment is being made an astronaut.
i have a qestion how can you switch between ships with which key you do this i dont know this key please help!
The first time you landed the ksc was at the end of the land to the right by the island
