We had a total solar eclipse here in Washington State in 1979 when I was in high school. I was excited to experience it and fully expected our health teacher to allow us to observe it but he said no. Not only did he keep us inside, he closed the blinds and showed a movie so it was impossible to watch. I was very puzzled by this behavior as it it seemed he wanted to deprive of us of this rare occurrence

Only 1/14th of the Republicans even voted for him, so basically 1.3% of people in that state even got up off their butt and voted for him. And that's the trend in every state. Trust me citizens and Americans show up on Election Day and that's where you're going to see him crushed. This isn't a Democrat Republican thing it's an American thing and he's a criminal and it's very sad to see people want to give him money and donate to his crimes especially when he doesn't give a flying rat's crap about you

The line of totality is an estimate. But a total eclipse is a total eclipse even if you don't see it. Your viewing location doesn't change what the eclipse is

I have to make a correction here that is very misleading. The moon is NOT 400 times smaller than the sun. The sun's DIAMETER is 400 times longer than the diameter of the moon. The sun (it's volume) is over 64 million times bigger than the moon.

It is definitely a special experience if you have ever witnessed a total solar eclipse. A partial does not compare. I was lucky to experience it in 2017. I can definitely see why ancient people got spooked by the crazy looking object in the sky and the sudden cooling of temperature and darkness not understanding what was going on. Sadly only those living in Maine will get the experience this time due to the thick cloud layer everywhere else along the path of totality. Next opportunity will be in Egypt August 2027.

I saw the last two while here in Az. and in Ca. I do not remember huge numbers of people flocking to these states at that time. I do not have a whole bunch of the latest scientific instruments to gather data from the event. From my experiences from viewing the totality of both of them all I can say is BFD!!! Twice in a lifetime is enough I am not suffering any fear of missing out as so many appear to be. I hope that they all make sure to drink enough alcohol to make it worth the trouble in their minds.

I know America is the only country in the world but I keep looking for information about NOT America. Will the eclipse go over Greenland, for example? All the reports and maps stop at Newfoundland, but I'm pretty sure the sky keeps turning. I had to do my own research. I live in Spain and I found a map that says partial eclipse in Galicia (northwest Spain), but not the rest of the country. Partial in Ireland but none in England?

I've travelled in the past to see 2 previous solar eclipses, were you worried about those ones? Do you know how often these happen? This one will happen in my backyard and honestly it is kinda neat but ultimately to someone that looks through telescopes it's a bit of a letdown compared to looking at Saturn rings and very much a case of "I've seen that before and meh, I'm not bothered to even look up."

Scientists have won the lottery if they want to observe all of the corona. But having a longer, deeper darkness during daytime would be cool too. Now you get to put on the disposable glasses immediately because the sun emerges from the other side.

@@mw9297 The mass and shape along with the exact distance from the sun makes the Moon perfectly fit over the Sun to our view. Total eclipses are a impossibility on other planets. Get a education.

Yh my only problem with trump is his relationship with putin, and he's a broke businessman...

I once knew a woman who was accidentally handcuffed to her bed post during a solar eclipse after her husband suffered a heart attack. Coincidentally during that same eclipse another woman nearby lured her husband to an old well and made him fall down it which killed him. Strange things can happen during an eclipse for sure.
