Happens so frequently that I dropped CNN from my TV service. MSNBC is no better and I dropped them as well. Fighting climate change should have started decades ago, I fear now it is too late, things are going to get far worse before they get better...though I am not an expert however I have been around the block a time or two. Mother Nature is PO'd with humans and is trying to get rid of us, she may succeed and for all other life on earth to have a chance, humans have got to go. "What does it mean????" No wonder Bill Nye replies sarcastically that it is about the use of fossil fuels and climate change. It pisses me off really knowing that the U.S. is still to this day careful about the use of climate change for political reasons. The U.S. is the greatest contributor to fossil fuels emissions and in great part responsible for climate change but also one of the last nation to admit to this new climate reality. As Bush once said, "the American way of life is not negotiable". Let's be clear, Mother Nature doesn't give a f*ck about the American way of life.

    And it's a 13 tonnes per year per person way of life. Which is worse than just about everyone except Canadians, petrostates and some island states. But it is at least falling. Both the US and Europe are reducing emissons per head, just nothing like fast enough. In most of the rest of the world the numbers are going up per head. Things are pretty bad, but try suggesting to someone that maybe they shouldn't fly halfway round the world this year (4 tonnes), or buy a new truck or boat 15 tonnes), and you'll often get short shrift. The idea of just doing less harmful stuff is still very unpopular despite the floods, fires and heatwaves.

  • @michelegagne5169

    5 күн бұрын

    @@BVN-TEXAS That's because you are just looking at recent numbers. In order, the current 3 greatest contributors to greenhouse gases are China, U.S. and India, while the greatest contributors by population are Saudi Arabia, Australia and Canada. But if you look at it overall and over decades, the top 3 contributors to greenhouse gases are the U.S, the EU and China. China''s increase as a contributor is due to its simultaneous economic boom but at the end of the day, the nation which has contributed the most overtime is...United States. That is why the U.S. has been nicknamed in environmental circles as "the great destroyer of the planet". Do my homework, you say. I have a little saying for you : "Culture and knowledge are like jam, the less one has, the more one spreads it". Be careful with what you throw out there unless you have sufficient background to debate it properly.

  • @xxwookey

    @xxwookey

    5 күн бұрын

    @@BVN-TEXAS No, China emissions per head is 8 tonnes, India 2 tonnes. So China is more than Europe (5.5) but still way less than Australia, The US and Canada which are all in the 14-15 range) (Saudi,UAE are even worse at 18 and 25t respectively). India is very low indeed in comparison to most developed countries and if the whole world had Indian levels of emissions we would be in much better place. You are right that Indian emissions are still rising, because they are still bringing a lot of people out of poverty, and China's has gone up slightly from 7.5 to 8 over the last 10 years. We can expect that to peak soon given their rates of renewables and nuclear installation. You have to judge relative emissions on a per-capita basis - it's just not useful to compare countries without accounting for population.

Guess the battle for effective climate policy doesn’t end even if it becomes law. Australia repealed theirs a while ago because of distrust and public perception too. It’s kind of like when Trump’s tax plan passed. I had to pay a lot more taxes than the year before, and I’m convinced that it was due to the changes in the tax code, but I never actually took the time to compute my taxes as if the rules hadn’t changed, so I don’t know for sure how much the new tax law actually hurt me. The polling and government data for the Canadian carbon tax shows that almost half of the people that think the rule negatively impacts them are mistaken.

If we can't afford an EV, we can always reduce our driving - if we choose to refrain from every second car journey, we have immediately halved the emissions of greenhouse gases. As consumers, we have enormous opportunities to influence - demand electrification of trains and public transport. Switch to electric stoves. How hard can it be?

Straight into 110 + most of June and no end in sight. There have been 4-5 fires within a 20 mile radius of our town--almost all human caused. June is always wildfire season, but the last few years have been bad. Plus, with el Niño gone and la Niña in, we may have a weak monsoon season (typically July-Aug...sometimes into Sept.) Bad thing is, the lightning that kickstarts monsoon season can sometimes be nothing but dry lightning with no rain...and those start lots of wildfires.

    Bill Nye is correct. We should be investing more in Fusion. Moreover we should not only invest in fusion but new 4th-5th Generation fission reactors. Most recent energy reports show the U.S. is at least 10-15 years BEHIND China in building nuclear reactors and nuclear R&D. While on average China can build new reactors in 7 years or less, the U.S. takes at least 10 years. The Sputnik moment for nuclear tech has come and gone - China is the leader. Consequently we may become reliant on their technology. They have long term planning in 5,10, 15 year increments, the U.S. has at best a 4 year plan based on our political system. It appears the U.S. is unable to compete unless we address systemic problems: education/training on STEM fields and our core values, e.g. do we value education as much as they do?

    @@drzaius1121 yes, heat waves are also a natural phenomenon. There are natural periods of heat and cold, just like seasons. Heat can get temporarily trapped in places, making it relatively warm in that location compared to its standard. None of that is new. But please try to understand that the heatwaves that are occurring right now aren't _just_ a natural phenomenon. Exceptionally warm/dry/cold/wet weather should be _exceptional_ . But these events are amplified both in frequency _and_ severity. We hit heat record after heat record every year. That is _not_ natural, it's caused by human activity. When it comes to any theory, and a large group of people, there will rarely be full unanimity on full belief in the theory. But there are many parts to it, and virtually none of thousands of climate scientists disagree with the statement that the earth is warming, humans have caused it through a variety of activities, that CO2 is one of the greater (but not only) problems, and that this causes extreme weather events to increase in frequency and magnitude. I'm sure you have picked up some alternative theory somewhere from someone. But if you can listen to a near-consensus of _the_ experts on the topic, why listen to an outlier?

The way he'd give suggestions on how to protect and take care of the environment while still making us laugh. I never thought that I'd be seeing that same guy, still being identified as "The Science Guy", saying the exact same things i heard in my 2nd grade classroom, 25 years ago, only now he's explaining the science behind what is happening. Not what could happen if we don't get our shit together. Bc we haven't gotten our shit together. But he is no longer making jokes.
