Awesome video doc and thanks for sharing. We run soft tow hooks on race cars as well which are sacrificial. Reminds me of audio cables for some reason.

Great video! Been using Miolle kinetic rope, Used twice already for trail recoveries, and worked like a charm. Nice hi-vis color makes it easy to see and, more importantly, stay clear of during the snatch. Seems very well made and robust. I definitely recommend this kinetic rope.

Just a correction, you called the soft shackle "nylon", it's actually HMPE , which is very different. Nylon is used in the kinetic ropes/straps because of its ability to stretch large amounts (can be up to 30% depending on the braid structure), HMPE ropes such as Plasma, Amsteel, and real Dyneema ropes stretch usually less than 1%.

This is exactly correct! Nylon stretches HMPE does not. Good Catch!!

I knew zero about recovery. Now I know a tiny bit. That was interesting.

Just a small thing. You don’t size a rope off the vehicle being recovered but the vehicle doing the recovery. So a rope will basically live with a vehicle.

I like my rope based recovery gear but it is situational. The biggest issue is abrasion resistance, I still use metal shakles in the rocks for that reason. In the rocks, you never want a dynamic strap, it's too uncontrolable, and if you get to a spot where you need to stop, you don't want that built up pressure pulling you.

Kinetic ropes are great. Highly recommend 4 dampers incase you snap it. 1 at 5ft and 1 at 10ft of each connection.

Forgot to add "weighted" I stuff my dampers with either snow or tire chains.

@2:13 that is an incorrect description of rating the usage of that soft shackle. 45,000 lbs. is the Minimum Breaking Strength and 52,300 lbs. is the average breaking strength of that shackle. Neither of those two numbers is the actual Working Strength usage of that soft shackle. those numbers are what it was tested at under their test conditions.

I love the non-metal recovery gear. I gave up winch wire 20 plus years ago when people were doing group purchases on Amsteel blue and making their own. My only issue is that at some point, you move the failure point to the vehicle and I have seen stuff go flying with the dynamic ropes whereas the static ropes (and winch ropes) they break, they just drop with no stored force. Most of the time you are good with not a ton of force or a moderate winch pull, but I do have a big dynamic rope just in case. PS when do we get to see the Tacoma?

Galvanized shackles yes, soft shackles that get damaged, no thanks. You can lift loads with a metal shackle, I don't think you'll ever see a rigger using one. I can agree with owning a kinetic strap, but the rest of my gear is all double duty, rigging and recovery.

Got to use mine a handful of times being silly in the PNW snow. It's simply amazing how the energy transfer creates a gentle tug compared to a jaw shattering jolt. Best part is it will last longer than my ARB strap which has a limited number of pulls before it becomes a simple strap.
