Social media is traumatising you on purpose | Facebook wants to make you sad and here's why

Algorithmic Cruelty. It sounds like an AI-generated metal band but in reality, it's where an algorithm has been unintentionally cruel. Like your mum at Christmas when she asks if you’ve put weight on.
The most recent examples include Spotify playing a song that someone listened to on repeat after a breakup and Facebook's Year in Review showing a father an image of his dead child.
But why does this happen and what can we do about it? I'm Simon Caine, and these are my terms of service.

Not 100% related to this video, but I'm proud to say that I have successfully convinced the Facebook/Instagram advertising algorithms that I'm a balding, overweight truck driver interested in purchasing real estate in Dubai. Furthermore, it seems they believe all my teeth are falling out, and I'm seeking to start my own dropshipping business while searching for financial managers. None of these things actually interest me or describe who I am.

The fact that there are real people/companies buying that BS data makes it even more hilarious. Well done, bald fat trucker.

Haha. I'd be super proud of that. My Facebook profile says I'm 60 years old and married to a man who I've not spoken to (on there) with in 10 years. We have a great marriage. 😅

Literally the day I turned 27 I started getting baby items and fertility clinics advertised to me, like a digital biological clock. I'm now 29 and they've started showing me fostering adverts. The algorithm clearly thinks that my ovaries have shriveled in the past two years 😂

😅😅😅 that's amazing! Give it a few years and they'll show you ads for spinster cat adoption 😄 I always refer back to the story of a teenager who got ads from Target in America because they worked out she was pregnant before she did.

I recently suffered a psychotic break. During my break my car/spotify kept playing songs on a "random" radio station. The themes and topics of ALL the song during my listen to were about suicide and suicidal ideations. I have the proof. It's fucking ridiculous. I was using Google Voice to text recorder and as I was talking about themes of suicide I received song recommendations for suicide.

Firstly, I am so sorry this happened to you. I hope you're feeling better now. And secondly, I'm not surprised. Algorithms (in their current form) do not have anyway of bringing in context to the data. So just do what they're told. Black and white. It's not good enough for companies who make billion on our data. They can and should do better.

Its interesting how algorithms have evolved over the years. They first started out as ways to increase discoverability of content online, specifically stuff you like. The lack of a trending algorithm is one of my gripes with mastodon. On twitter i used to be able to know what is happening in my area by checking the trending and recommended. On Mastodon, the system of just aggregating the most talked about #'s isn't nearly smart enough to get me something interesting. I'm really torn. I really do enjoy a perfectly tuned algorithm designed to feed me interesting stuff. I'm missing it on platforms that don't have it. But they are capable of so much harm. anyways Mr Potato Head, i am really busy burning time. See you next video!

I totally get it. Personally I'd like to see an algorithm that lets me adjust it. So I can have a feed custom to me, but I could say "actually, I searched for that for a friend. Please don't give me ads for it etc". Anyway! Thank you for watching, godspeed 😀

@@simoncaine9515 Oddly enough, even though a video like this one says "Unlisted", it still shows up in your "Let's talk about..." playlist on your channel. This is not the only one btw, there are more in that same playlist and in the "You're wrong about..." playlist. Not an expert by any means so I don't know if this is a bug or not, but maybe you could make future videos private instead of unlisted?

I completely agree. But it's about the context. And algorithms do not take any context into account. I did a whole video called Context Collapse/ Why Twitter is so Toxic, looking at why we have no control over our context and the issues that causes. With algorithms it causes similar issues but in the reverse.

when I look for some advice about exercising, youtube starts feeding me every possible kind of gym/fitness video. They are very clickbaiting and very distracting. I have a training plan, but here comes the very convincing video about why I have to do X exercise or eat Y food. This used to have a negative and demotivating effect on me and I wasn't even wise enough to notice up until recently. Now, I only use youtube recs for entertainment. I actively avoid recommended videos about stuff I'm doing in real life, like fitness or programming. This also means I'm using youtube less, which is great in general as you can expect.

I feel this! I've had a similar thing for research and health stuff for me. They're DESPERATE to keep you on here. So anything that does well is thrown at you. But the truth is a lot of experts / helpful creators can't afford fancy thumbnail designers or SEO title copywriters. I hope something changes soon.
