Yes to the spreadsheets please. :-) That would be awesome. I've started a spreadsheet on Google Sheets and I'm learning as I go - it's a great program. Thanks for baring all in this video. Your honesty is much appreciated. I'm looking at starting a soap and body/bath product business this year and have been watching and learning on KZread and blogs. I've been product testing since December and have learnt so much and I can see my soaps are improving with each batch - then I do something silly and learn by it. I found a man who was selling his soaping supplies and was fortunate to get a few drums of oils and dozens of bottles of fragrance and 6 nice big moulds and a cutter and a box of mica colourants for about $300. So testing hasn't been a huge expense . . . YET. I'm just about to buy my first large drum of coconut oil and shudder to find out how much it's going to cost - but I know it's the cheapest way to go. Thanks again for the great content and I look forward to a vlog on your spreadsheet development. Cheers from downunder. Ann

I am new to soap making and started out with melt and pour because I was intimidated by the lye thing. I feel ready to use cold soap now and appreciate you having the courage to do the videos you do. Very helpful and I have Shiny Stuff Syndrome horribly too.

Just found you tonight! You are so personable and thank you! Talking to someone who is so straight-laced and fact of matter... And acting like they are perfect turns me away. I learn better from real people that have learned and are willing to teach what they did to come to their findings. Thank you for being human! I am all over the board. I call myself a multi faceted crafter. But starting out I need to stop learn that it's ok to focus on just a couple things instead of everything. So thank you!

Thank you for this video. Spreadsheets never entered my mind! I am definitely the “shiny object” sort of person. Thank you so much for posting this information. I am very new to the homemade soap ideas, and I'm so eager to start my own business from home. Unfortunately because i live in the UK, ive got so many rules and regulations to follow its very difficult to even begin. I appreciate your information as i also almost fell into the trap of buying too much. Anyway, good luck to you in your future plans. 🥰😊

Thank you for the kind words! What kind of regulations do they have in the UK? I’m quite curious, if you don’t mind my asking?
@calmkarma1
2 жыл бұрын
@@EleveHandmade hi, it's alot to go into but effectively you've got to register your recipie, get a certification, register and get certified before you can sell anything to anyone. The UK has the most rules when it comes to safety procedures etc. Everything has to be strictly analysed.

i looked today at what might be required to start a small soap making business in Arizona, USA. From what I can see, a minimum of three different state taxes/licenses. And thats not counting any federal, county or city regulations may be involved.
Would love to learn how to do spreadsheets great video btw👍

I am probably only four months into starting my social business and could use all of your good advice that I could get right now I’m just struggling with getting on the website I’ve even had a struggle just getting a darn soap stamp because I ordered it probably from China and it’s been months and I still haven’t got it so anyway small thing but yeah I just wanted to say hi. My name is Diane and I appreciate what you’re putting out there. Good luck to us both.

Yes please share spreadsheets as well
Safety first 🥰🥰♥️🙌🏽👌🏽 I’m taking notes 📝 I’m still buying material and doing research 🔬 I haven’t started making any soap. I did a body scrub and emulsified body butter which the butter was a mess, I still have a long way to go. I’m based in South Africa 🇿🇦

Working on it!!
I'm trying to focus.. I pulled some Weeds, herbs golden rod and made tea, oils and salves. Then I saw soap kit in Walmart. The list of stuff to buy gets big. I just figured out in soap the difference between Essential oil and fragrance. How much to add to get the smell. Or do you want Herbal, healing soap. Deciding what you want to make for you is good but then finding out what others like, tested, gave you feedback on seems to be a key.. Before as you said bought a bunch of this oil and scent but no one likes it, won't sell. I have some crappy cheap molds but they are great for testing soap, small batch. I've been using melt and pour. Thinking about making cold processes. There goes the budget.. more things to buy.. big mold has to sit 6 weeks to see if it's any good Verses melt and pour I can test the next day. I love the Good, Bad Ugly talk. My melt and pour in crappy mold is ugly But I'm working on smell and mens fragrance or scub off grease. I can also spend a bunch on finding a good melt and pour that has the right oils or butters. Some that will let me add some things to make it mine. I've just watched this video and none of your making ones. I'm assuming ( that word) you've done melt and pour. Which saves time in production. I just made myself a big note. Sorry if all over the place, I'm trying to focus on one thing, I too like Shinny things and Tools. I love to learn and that cost me money. Great video thanks
I love your channel! Just found you yesterday. I started soap making a few weeks ago. I am still trying to figure a lot out. I want to sell different handmade things but making soaps definitely scared me because people put it on their bodies and haven’t been able to determine how much of essential oils, dry plants, honey, and all other additives to add to my melt and pour soap to make it safe. Do you have any recommendations on how to figure that out? All videos I watch don’t really go into that detail.
@serihuff2050
2 жыл бұрын
Your melt and pour is already formulated. So all you do is melt it. I make lye soaps and I usually put 1 tbsp per batch (48oz). I put 1oz oil per batch as well. Now when it comes to dry plants you can just add as you please.

Oh WOW! I wish I had watched this before starting my crafting business. The awful is totally me! My husband actually calls me squirrel. I have a small crafting business that was making about $1000 a month, but because of my squirrel, I was completely in the red and was creating physical and mental chaos for myself. I took on too much and got burnt out. I am now looking to get back into it after a long break but really do think I need to do the spreadsheets. How do you go about doing those?
@EleveHandmade
Жыл бұрын
That’s totally me!! Every couple of weeks I think: YES! WE MUST OFFER A NEW CATEGORY.. I need focus 😂. I’m working on the spreadsheet video, hope to have it up soon!
I think a lot of people don't realize how much work is involved in starting a business. I would highly suggest sitting down and writing a business plan. Get a book on it. Think about the whole process from cradle to grave. Make it legal. LLC..... What market do you want to go after? Retail, wholesale, private label? Keeping track of your cost of materials AND your time is essential. It will help you think about how to streamline your process. How are you going to market your products? Packaging, shop for your materials with various suppliers, etc...... Also, I would highly recommend checking out SCORE. They have a lot of good information for small businesses. Ok i'm done Lol

Yes!!! SO many valuable pieces of information in your comment, especially for newer soap makers. Thanks for the run down ❤️❤️❤️.
Do you have any recommendations on containers or package for bath bombs or bath scrubs
@EleveHandmade
2 жыл бұрын
I’m working on updating all of my packaging now- I’m not a fan of where I started! I plan to film a video about it when everything gets here. But I would say that scrubs are best in a jar type of container, something that can be sealed and unsealed over time. Bath bombs are definitely trickier!! I would say shrink wrapping them in plastic.
did you have to get any certifications for your soaps? or do you personally invest in business insurance since your product is coming into contact with people's skin?

Hey there! Do you mean how do I account for the materials or what I do with the products when they are made?
Spreadsheets would make it so much easier to keep track of and calculate things. I have had the same problem with buying things I don't really need because "it's only $10 or $20."
