So, You Didn't Vote for Larry Walker l Baseball Bits

Baseball Hall of Fame voting for 2019 is complete and votes are being tallied. With Edgar Martinez and Mike Mussina seemingly on their way, Baseball Bits turns its attention to the case of Larry Walker. The Larry Walker Hall of Fame case is clear in my mind. He deserves to be voted in, but even though he has made big gains this year, it will come down to 2020 to decide if he actually gets in.

This is a video about why Larry Walker should be in the Hall of Fame. It uses in-depth analytics to justify his inclusion despite the cries of LARRY WALKER COORS LARRY WALKER COORS. We compare him to a couple players, most notably Ken Griffey Jr. and the Todd Helton Hall of Fame case. The Todd Helton and Larry Walker Rockies played in offensive powerhouses, but that doesn't mean we can dismiss them entirely. This is all to say that unpacking the Coors Effect is of great important to understanding Walker's Hall of Fame case.

To be fair, their prime hitting years didn't overlap by much. Tony Gwynn won his 8th and final batting title in 1997, at the age of 37. Larry Walker won his 1st batting title in 1998. (He did finish 2nd to Gwynn in 1997, but that was the only year he really competed with Gwynn for the batting title.) Tony Gwynn had already won 3 of his 8 batting titles before Larry Walker even played a major league game.

Larry Walker reminds of players like Will Clark, Don Mattingly, Frank White, Ruben Sierra. Juan Gonzales, Joe Carter, Albert Belle, Chuck Knoblauch, Gary Gaetti, Darryl Strawberry, Devon White, Andruw Jones, David Justice......with an honorable mention to Wally Joyner. As a Rockies fan I'm obviously really biased but I love this video. Also, for all of the times that people have said that our position players don't deserve various accolades because of Coors field, how come it never works the other way around for our pitching staff? Like why didn't Freeland get more buzz for the Cy Young because he pitched so well at Coors? I'm not saying he definitely deserved it, but if all our position players get knocked down a peg for playing at Coors, our pitchers should get some sort credit for it.

I mean he had 3 seasons in a row where he batted over .360. If you look at his 162 game avg stats it is 31 HR, 107 RBI, .313 BA, 20 SB, those are HOF stats if I have ever seen them. If he played in NY or BOS he'd have been first ballot. He definitely deserves a spot in the HOF.

Personally, I divide Hall of Famers into three categories: the great ones, the very good ones, and those who should not be in there. Two examples of the first category would be Willie Mays and Babe Ruth. Two examples of the second category would be George Brett and Enos Slaughter. Two examples of the third category would be Tony Perez and Joe Cronin. There are a number of ex-players that would be right there on the cusp with Larry Walker. Al Oliver and Fred McGriff come to mind. I'm a purest. My hall of fame would have about 40 players. Most years would have no inductees. This year there would be Mariano Rivera. Last year Jim Thome and no one in 2017. The previous inductee would have been Ken Griffey Jr. 3 years ago.

Jeff Bagwell had a career WAR of 79.9 and you wouldn't have voted for him in 2017? His career WAR was only 4 below Griffey's, which, given how long they played, was like 0.2 WAR per year. Would you not have let Frank Thomas in either? That would be absurd given he was one of the best hitters of all time, yet Thomas' career WAR is 6 lower Bagwell's. The only possible reason to not let Bagwell in would be steroid rumors, but given he never failed a drug test and all evidence he used is circumstantial, I think it would be wrong to deny him on that basis. All three electees in 2017 were legit. Pudge Rodriguez and Tim Raines both had 69 career WAR which is more than enough to merit hall of fame induction. Tim Raines is fifth all time in stolen bases and has a career stolen base percentage of 85%.

@Jon English Well, you've got guys like Scott Rolen and Dwight Evans who never got a sniff of the HOF who have better WAR numbers than do Willie Stargell or Hank Greenberg who are in the Hall. so you need to take your complaint to the HOF voters and not waste your time on me.

  • @renshawjoshua

Mike Walters Then it’s a good thing that the HOF makes a distinction exactly like the one you are describing; called “first ballot”. While there isn’t a special wing where “first ballot” players are separated from the “very good players” who eventually get in; the great ones are denoted as special by their “first ballot” status; and described as such with this specific language.
