Old fashioned baseball is a fun topic, so I decided to dig into the career of a legendary pitcher.
In 1884, dead ball baseball era legend Old Hoss Radbourn, also known as Charles Radbourn or Charley Radbourn, had perhaps the best pitching season ever. 135 years later, we meet here on Opening Day to discuss the legendary Old Hoss Radbourn 59 wins, or was it Old Hoss Radbourn 60 wins? Either way, Old Hoss Radbourn 1884 needs more attention.
One of a handful of MLB 300 game winners, Radbourn did most of his damage for the Providence Grays of the National League. He also played for the Boston Beaneaters. We learn about his feud with Charlie Sweeney, as well as the legendary stats behind his 1884 season. We also learn quite a bit about 1880s baseball in general. In total, the season is chock full of unbreakable baseball records. We end by showing some Old Hoss Radbourn twitter antics.

Foolish Baseball I don’t mind the sponsors; but be careful using TAPS comedically. It’s disrespectful and in general, baseball fans by-and-large are the sort of people who might take offense to that. Just something to consider.
you forgot the part where the game before he quit, charlie sweeney pitched another whole game drunk and won. after which he didn’t leave with the team but rather with an escort he brought to the game. goddamn legend

An important thing you glossed over, my man: Hoss's warmups with that numb arm. Several hours before game time he'd start by tossing the ball feebly to catcher Barney Gilligan standing just a couple of feet away. Little by little Hoss would loosen up and take steps back, back, back, until he was throwing at Gilligan from second base. Moving forward to the mound when the game began was like batting right after taking several weight rings out of your bat. Speaking of which, here's another fun but often overlooked stat: Ol' Hoss had 387 Plate Appearances that season, 361 At-Bats.

Fun fact, for this season, old hoss radbourne had a pitcher war of 19.2 according to baseball reference. That is the 3rd highest pitcher war in history, and yet somehow only the second highest WAR of 1884! While hoss did lead the NL in innings, era, and era+, Pud Galvin set the all time record for pitcher WAR at 20.5 playing for the buffalo bisons
For reference, it took the Cleveland Browns 12 years 2 months, and 8 days (October 26th, 2008 - January 3rd, 2021) to win 60 regular-season games.
I'm from Providence and people here think that I'm completely batshit insane when I tell them that we used to have an MLB team, and that team won the first World Series thanks to the first dude to ever flip the bird on camera. Then I show them this video...
